Morocco work visa for Americans: how a job offer becomes a residence card
In Morocco, the "work visa" is a stamp on your employment contract. Your employer gets it approved, then you register with the police for a card that lets you stay.
One consultancy puts the whole process at three to five months, from signed offer to card in hand. Below are the four steps, what each costs in dirhams and dollars, and what this permit won't let you do.

How it works
The permit belongs to the job, not to you
Morocco's work authorization is a visa stamped on your employment contract by the Ministry of Labor. Your employer applies online through a system called TAECHIR, the only channel the Ministry has accepted since June 2017. That approved contract then backs your residence card.
- Good fit: you have a written offer from an employer in Morocco, or your company's parent is seconding you there
- Poor fit: remote work for a U.S. company. Morocco has no digital nomad visa
- Poor fit: freelancing. You can start a business on a residence card, but a salaried role in your own company still needs an approved contract

The process
From offer letter to police card, in four steps
Your employer carries the first three steps. The last one is yours, and the clock on it starts the day you land: visits of 90 days or less need no visa, but living there takes a residence card.
- ANAPEC, the national jobs agency, certifies that no Moroccan candidate fits. The job runs in a French-language and an Arabic-language newspaper, and standard files take up to 20 business days. Senior and hard-to-fill roles can clear in 48 hours.
- Your employer fills in the official contract model on TAECHIR and uploads three signed originals, your diploma copies, your passport page and sworn translations.
- The Ministry stamps the contract. Its stated limit is 10 days; one relocation guide says it can stretch to three months.
- You apply for your residence card (carte d'immatriculation) with the police where you live. Bring a medical certificate showing no contagious disease, a criminal record extract, passport copies, photos and proof of housing. A receipt (récépissé) comes about a month after you file, and the card one to two months later.
Who skips the no-local-candidate test
Company managers, co-managers and shareholders don't need ANAPEC's test, and neither do staff seconded by a parent company for up to three years, spouses of Moroccan citizens, or employees of Casablanca Finance City firms. ANAPEC still issues a letter confirming the exemption, so the step gets shorter rather than disappearing.

The limits
What the contract stamp doesn't cover
Changing jobs
Any change to the contract, including a new employer, a new salary or a new end date, needs a fresh approval.
Your spouse
A spouse can't work on your authorization. They need their own offer and their own approved contract.
Starting early
An employer who puts you to work without an approved contract faces a fine of 2,000 to 5,000 dirhams (about $210 to $520) per worker, doubled for repeat offenses.
Your paycheck, in both countries
Moroccan income tax
Tax residents pay on worldwide income. The first 40,000 dirhams (about $4,150) a year is tax-free, then rates run from 10% up to 37% above 180,000 dirhams (about $18,650), as of April 2026.
Social security
Employees pay 4.48% of salary to Morocco's CNSS plus 2.26% for medical coverage. The U.S. has no Social Security agreement with Morocco, so if a U.S. employer keeps you on its payroll, both countries can tax the same pay.
Your U.S. return
You keep filing with the IRS. A U.S.-Morocco tax treaty has been signed since 1977, and at Morocco's 34% and 37% brackets the foreign tax credit usually beats the earned income exclusion.
The exit paperwork
When you leave for good, you'll need a tax clearance certificate (quitus fiscal) showing your Moroccan taxes are settled.

Morocco work visa questions
Can I work remotely for a U.S. company while living in Morocco?
Not on this permit. Morocco has no digital nomad visa, and its work authorization is a stamp on a contract with an employer in Morocco. Visits of up to 90 days need no visa, but living there requires a residence card.
Can my spouse work in Morocco if I get a work permit?
No. A spouse can't work on your authorization and needs their own job offer and approved contract. Spouses of Moroccan citizens are the exception to one step: they don't need ANAPEC's no-local-candidate certificate.
Does a Moroccan work permit lead to permanent residence?
It can. After renewals and four years of regular, uninterrupted residence, you can move to the 10-year card. That card costs 1,000 dirhams (about $104).
Can I change jobs in Morocco on a work permit?
Yes, but not freely. Any change to your contract, including a new employer, needs a fresh approval from the Ministry of Labor before you start.
How much does a Morocco work permit cost?
ANAPEC charges 5,000 dirhams (about $520, before tax) per certificate application that needs a job ad, plus 1,500 dirhams (about $155) for each extra candidate. The residence card costs 100 dirhams (about $10) for a one-year card, up to 1,000 dirhams (about $104) for a 10-year card, paid in cash. Dollar figures use the September 2026 rate.
Do Americans need a visa to enter Morocco before starting a job?
Not to enter. U.S. citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. To live and work there, you need an employment contract approved by the Ministry of Labor and a residence card (carte d'immatriculation) from the police. Ask your employer early whether it wants you to arrive on a particular kind of entry.
Will I pay income tax in both Morocco and the U.S.?
You'll file in both. Moroccan tax residents pay on worldwide income at rates up to 37%, and the U.S. taxes citizens wherever they live. The foreign tax credit lets you offset U.S. tax with Moroccan tax paid, and a U.S.-Morocco tax treaty has been signed since 1977.
How long does it take to get permission to work in Morocco?
The Ministry of Labor says it answers contract requests within 10 days, though one relocation guide reports waits of up to three months. Before that, ANAPEC's jobs test takes up to 20 business days for a standard file. One consultancy puts the whole process, from offer to residence card, at three to five months.
