Studying in Morocco as an American: no visa, but a police file within 90 days
What the student residence card costs, what goes in the file, and how to pay for school when most federal aid stays home.
There's no student visa to apply for. You fly in on your U.S. passport, enroll, and file for a carte d'immatriculation étudiant at the local police station before day 90.

The process
From arrival stamp to student card
Morocco's embassy in Washington says U.S. citizens don't need a visa and can stay up to 90 days. To stay longer, Law 02-03 requires a residence card, and its "étudiant" category covers people enrolled in a Moroccan school who can show they can support themselves.
- Before you fly: get your acceptance letter and an FBI Identity History Summary, and pack the original in your carry-on.
- Enter visa-free. Your passport needs six months of validity on arrival.
- Enroll, then file at the Bureau des Étrangers of your police prefecture or central police station (the Gendarmerie in rural areas) within 90 days of entry.
- Pay the 100 MAD tax stamp (about $10) and keep the récépissé, a receipt that stands in for the card while it's made. Guides report about 35 days in total.
- Renew before it expires. Renewals swap the FBI check for a Moroccan court record from the Ministry of Justice in Rabat.
Seen a site telling you to visit a consulate?
Several visa services say Americans need a student visa from a Moroccan consulate before flying. Morocco's own embassy says U.S. citizens don't need a visa, and the U.S. Embassy in Rabat describes the student card as something you apply for with the police after you arrive. If your school sends different instructions, follow the school.
Your file
What the police will ask you to bring
The U.S. consulate in Casablanca can't take fingerprints for an FBI check, so sort that out before you leave. The FBI's online request (eDO) costs $18 plus fingerprinting and mail.
At Al Akhawayn University, the international office collects the forms at orientation and files them with the police for a one-time 200 MAD (about $21) service fee.
- Passport, with copies of the ID page and your entry stamp
- Eight ID photos, 2.5 x 2.5 cm (about 1 x 1 inch)
- Your school's enrollment certificate (attestation d'inscription)
- Proof of address, such as a lease
- A medical certificate saying you're free of contagious disease
- A balance letter (attestation bancaire) from a Moroccan bank account
- Your FBI record, translated into French (about 200 MAD, or $21, a page in Morocco)
- The 100 MAD tax stamp
Four ways Americans study in Morocco
A full degree at Al Akhawayn
English-language, U.S.-style liberal arts in Ifrane, accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. Campus sits at about 5,400 feet, roughly 37 miles from Fez and Meknes.
A semester on exchange
Through a partner U.S. college, you usually pay home tuition plus some AUI fees. One Illinois school quotes about $600 to $800 in AUI fees and suggests $1,000 a semester for personal spending.
A funded summer of Arabic
The State Department's Critical Language Scholarship ran 2026 programs in Tangier and Meknes with AALIM, with host-family stays. At about nine weeks, it fits inside the 90 visa-free days.
Anything under 90 days
Short courses need no card at all. One Meknes language school says most longer-stay students leave briefly every three months instead. That's a workaround, not a legal status.
Paying for it
How Americans cover tuition when federal aid won't follow
Grants and loans mostly stay home
Pell Grants never work at foreign schools. Federal loans need the school on the Department of Education's foreign-school list; when we checked in September 2026, no Moroccan school was on it. Grad PLUS also closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.
Exchange students keep their home aid
Go through a U.S. college's exchange and you list your home school on the FAFSA, so its aid applies.
Budgeting in dirhams
At AUI, 15 credits at the international rate come to 50,400 MAD (about $5,250) a semester. A single room in the newer halls adds 17,811 MAD (about $1,860), and new students leave a 3,000 MAD (about $310) damage deposit. The Moroccan rate needs a Moroccan parent, or parents who've paid Moroccan income tax for more than five years. Fees change yearly, so check AUI's international tuition page.
Dollar figures use Bank Al-Maghrib's rate of about 9.6 dirhams per dollar (September 2026). You can't carry dirhams out of Morocco.
Who should think twice
Here's the catch: a student card doesn't open the local job market. Moroccan employers need Labor Ministry approval stamped on a foreigner's contract. Spend more than 183 days in any 365 and you're a Moroccan tax resident, taxed on worldwide income subject to tax treaties. Skip the filing and overstay, and you'll see a judge before you can leave. We couldn't confirm the rules for a spouse or children, so ask your school's international office early.

Morocco student visa questions
What happens if I stay in Morocco past 90 days without applying?
The State Department says anyone who stays beyond 90 days without requesting an extension has to appear before a judge before leaving, and clearance may include a fine. Filing for the residence card before day 90 avoids this.
How long do I have to apply for a Moroccan student residence card?
Visa-exempt students, including Americans, file within 90 days of their entry date. Once you file, you get a receipt called a récépissé that covers you while the card is made, which guides put at about 35 days.
How much does the Moroccan student residence card cost?
The card itself takes a 100 MAD tax stamp, about $10 as of September 2026. Add the FBI background check ($18 through the FBI's online request, plus fingerprinting and mail) and a French translation, which runs about 200 MAD (about $21) a page in Morocco. Al Akhawayn University also charges a one-time 200 MAD service fee to file for you.
Will I owe Moroccan taxes as a student?
Possibly, if you have income. Spending more than 183 days in any 365-day period makes you a Moroccan tax resident, and residents are taxed on worldwide income, subject to tax treaties. You still file U.S. returns as usual.
Can I work in Morocco on a student residence card?
Not at a local job without more paperwork. Any Moroccan employer hiring a foreigner needs Labor Ministry approval stamped on the employment contract. Whether remote work for a U.S. employer is allowed on a student card isn't spelled out, so get advice first.
Is Al Akhawayn University taught in English?
Yes. All courses at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane are taught in English, and the school is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. International undergraduate tuition is 3,360 MAD (about $350) per credit as of September 2026.
Do Americans need a student visa to study in Morocco?
No. Morocco's embassy in the U.S. says U.S. citizens don't need a visa and can stay up to 90 days. Students staying longer apply for a student residence card (carte d'immatriculation étudiant) at the local police station after they arrive and enroll.
Can I use federal student loans at a Moroccan university?
Not for a degree at a Moroccan school, based on the Department of Education's foreign-school list as of September 2026, which had no Moroccan schools. Pell Grants never apply at foreign schools. If you study in Morocco on an exchange through a U.S. college, you list your home school on the FAFSA and its aid rules apply.
