Madagascar's student visa lasts 30 days. The permit comes after you land.
The embassy gives you a one-month transformable visa, and the Interior Ministry in Antananarivo turns it into long-stay status. Here's what each side asks for, and why U.S. federal loans won't follow you to a Malagasy university.
There are two ways Americans end up in a Malagasy classroom: a semester through a U.S. program, like SIT's in Antananarivo, or enrolling at a Malagasy university yourself. Both run on the same visa. Only the first can bring your U.S. financial aid along.

Before you fly
Get a registration certificate from a Malagasy university recognized by the higher-education ministry. Then apply at a Madagascar embassy, within 90 days of departure. The embassy lists in Paris and Geneva also ask for a criminal record extract under three months old, a stamped housing letter from your school, a copy of your last diploma, and a scholarship letter or a signed, legalized letter of financial support. The Washington list may differ, so confirm it before you mail anything. Fees aren't refunded.
Your first month
The visa is transformable: you have one month from arrival to file for long-stay status with the Interior Ministry or the EDBM one-stop shop in Antananarivo. A long-stay visa can't be issued at the airport.
The card
The ministry's notification letter comes three weeks after your photos. Pay at the ministry's cashier and the card follows in 72 hours; pay through a bank and it's 45 days. Renewals go through the same ministry.

About that data card
Our list says "Letter of acceptance from Malagasy educational institution." Madagascar's embassies want a registration certificate from a school the higher-education ministry recognizes, plus a criminal record extract under three months old, a housing letter from the school and a copy of your last diploma. The 10-day processing figure covers only the embassy stage; the Interior Ministry's letter alone takes three weeks.

Which route
A semester with SIT, or a Malagasy degree
SIT's Fall 2026 biodiversity semester runs August 30 to December 12 from Antananarivo, for 16 credits, with courses in English and Malagasy or French language classes. Direct costs are $24,571 ($21,695 tuition plus $2,876 room and board), and SIT estimates about $1,900 more for airfare. Its admissions team walks you through the visa, and it awards scholarships of $500 to $5,000.
Enrolling at a Malagasy university yourself uses the same visa, and you'll handle every step. It fits someone committed to a full program. It's a poor fit if you want to test the country on a tourist visa first: a short-stay visa can't be converted once you're there.
Budget as if you can't earn
Madagascar sorts paid work into its own expatriate-worker visa, and long internships into another category. One relocation guide says foreign students can't work outside internships, and we found nothing official that grants students work hours. Bring the money for your whole program.
The money side
No Malagasy university is on the federal loan list
Foreign schools can only offer U.S. students Direct Loans, and the Department of Education's list of participating foreign schools has no school in Madagascar. The only African countries on it are Egypt and South Africa. So a degree you enroll in directly is paid from savings, scholarships or private loans. Grad students lost another option on July 1, 2026, when Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers.
A semester through a U.S. school is different: federal aid can cover study abroad when your home school certifies it, so start with your financial aid office.
Daily life is modest. Our data puts a single person at about $750 a month, with a central one-bedroom around $350 and one farther out near $100.

Studying in Madagascar: your questions
How long do I have to file after arriving in Madagascar?
One month. The transformable visa has to be converted at the Interior Ministry or the EDBM one-stop shop in Antananarivo within a month of arrival. A relocation firm reports that anyone who misses it has to leave and apply again from abroad.
How much does a Madagascar student visa cost?
TravelDocs, a Washington visa service, lists the embassy fee at $48.16 in 2026, and SIT budgets about $54. The embassy in Paris charges 39 euros. The Interior Ministry doesn't publish its card fee online, so ask when you file. Visa fees aren't refunded.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccine or malaria pills for Madagascar?
The CDC says yellow fever vaccination applies to travelers coming from countries with yellow fever risk, so check the countries on your route. It recommends malaria pills for most of the island, though transmission is rare in Antananarivo. It also flags rabies, because infected dogs are common.
Is Madagascar safe for American students?
The State Department rates Madagascar Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, as of December 2025, citing crime and civil unrest, and it rates six specific areas higher, at Reconsider Travel.
Can I use federal student loans at a university in Madagascar?
Not if you enroll directly. Foreign schools can only offer Direct Loans, and no school in Madagascar is on the Department of Education's list of participating foreign schools. Federal aid can still apply to a study abroad program certified by your U.S. school.
Can I work while studying in Madagascar?
Don't count on it. Paid work has its own expatriate-worker visa category, and long internships have another. A relocation guide says foreign students can't work outside internships, and no official source we found gives students work hours.
Can I enter Madagascar as a tourist and switch to a student visa?
No. Madagascar's embassy in Paris states that a short-stay visa can't be turned into a long-stay visa in Madagascar. A tourist e-visa for up to 90 days costs 50 euros (about $59) as of 2026, and short stays can only be extended at a police station to three months in total.
Do Americans need a visa to study in Madagascar?
Yes, for a semester or a degree. You apply at a Madagascar embassy for a one-month transformable visa before you fly, then file for long-stay status with the Interior Ministry in Antananarivo within a month of arriving. A visa for a stay of more than 90 days can't be issued at the airport.
