Lebanon student visa: how Americans get a study permit in 2026

You don't file a student visa from home. You land on a free one-month entry, your university files a 12-month residence permit for about $168, and both AUB and LAU accept U.S. federal Direct Loans.

This page is for Americans who already have a place at a Lebanese university or an exchange semester lined up. It covers the permit, the fees in pounds and dollars, the paperwork order, and how to pay tuition with U.S. aid.

Lebanon student visa: how Americans get a study permit in 2026

Read the travel advisory before the course catalog

The State Department reissued Lebanon's Level 4, Do Not Travel, advisory in August 2026, citing crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, landmines and armed conflict, stating it has limited ability to help Americans there in an emergency. Non-emergency embassy staff were ordered out in February 2026, and AUB taught fully online for two days in March 2026 after Iran's Revolutionary Guard threatened U.S. universities in the region. If Lebanon is one of several options for a semester abroad, pick another this year. If your U.S. college runs the program, ask whether it grants credit in a Level 4 country before you pay a deposit.

How it works

The permit gets filed in Beirut, not from home

Lebanon's General Security gives U.S. citizens a free one-month visa when they land, extendable to three months. To stay for a full academic year, you switch to a one-year student residence permit, filed after you arrive and before that entry visa runs out. At AUB, the Office of International Programs files it and represents you at General Security.

One wrinkle: the State Department's country page tells Americans to get a visa before they fly. If you'd rather not test that at the airport, the Lebanese embassy in Washington issues one for $88 (single entry), paid by money order or cashier's check. Bring a passport valid for at least a year, which is what AUB asks for the permit.

Step by step

Your first five weeks in order

Dollar figures here use Lebanon's official rate of LBP 89,500 to the dollar. The one-month clock is tight, so start the day you land.

  1. Keep your entry stamp. You'll hand in a color copy of it.
  2. Ask the Registrar for an Arabic enrollment certificate. AUB quotes 3 to 4 working days.
  3. Get it notarized at the Ministry of Higher Education. Allow at least two to three weeks. This is the step that eats your month.
  4. Sign a notarized pledge not to work while you study (students 18 and over).
  5. Hand in the file with three photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm), passport copies, a bank statement (yours or a parent's) and your paid fee statement.

If the Ministry step runs long, extend your entry visa rather than letting it lapse. Renewals start at least five weeks before the permit expires.

Just coming for a summer of Arabic?

AUB's Summer Arabic Programs run five weeks for 6 credits on the Beirut campus, with one track in Modern Standard Arabic and culture and one in colloquial Lebanese. AUB says participants come on a tourist visa, so there's no residence permit to file.

Federal loans work at AUB and LAU

U.S. citizens at AUB can borrow Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and PLUS loans, except MD and nursing students (AUB aid page). LAU takes Direct Loans too under FAFSA code G41133, excluding medical, PharmD and nursing students and anyone under 6 credits (LAU catalog).

What doesn't travel

Pell Grants, SEOG and campus-based aid aren't offered at universities outside the U.S. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, so new grad students top out at $20,500 a year in federal loans. Parent PLUS is now capped at $20,000 per student per year.

The tuition math

AUB bills undergrads for the first 15 credits only. Fifteen humanities credits at $855 comes to $12,825 a semester, before a $218 technology fee and $408 for a year of student health insurance.

One U.S. form to know

If your foreign accounts total more than $10,000 at any point in a year, you file an FBAR, due April 15 with an automatic extension to October 15.

Rules that can end a semester early

Any trace of Israel travel

Passports with Israeli visas or stamps are refused at the border, and the State Department warns past visits can lead to arrest even without a stamp.

A job on the side

The permit comes with a notarized pledge not to work while you study. Plan to live on savings, family support or loans.

A late renewal

Permits last 12 months. AUB tells students to start renewing at least five weeks before expiry to avoid overstay penalties.

An overstay

AUB's checklist lists LBP 15M a year (about $168). A visitor more than a month past expiry can't leave until they contact General Security within 48 hours.

Lebanon student visa: common questions

Do I need a residence permit for a summer Arabic program in Beirut?

No. AUB's five-week Summer Arabic Programs tell participants to come on a tourist visa, which covers a stay of that length.

Can I enter Lebanon if I've been to Israel?

Not with Israeli stamps or visas in your passport: travelers with them are refused entry and can be detained. The State Department warns that people can be arrested if past travel to Israel becomes known, even without a stamp.

Can I use FAFSA and federal student loans to study in Lebanon?

Yes, at schools that take them. The American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University (FAFSA code G41133) both accept Direct Loans, with exclusions for medical and nursing students. Pell Grants don't apply abroad, and Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.

Do Americans need a student visa to study in Lebanon?

Not one filed from home. Lebanon's General Security gives U.S. citizens a free one-month visa on arrival, extendable to three months, and students then get a one-year student residence permit filed through their university before that visa expires. The State Department's page says to get a visa before travel, and the Lebanese embassy in Washington recommends one for stays over a month, so some students buy the $88 single-entry embassy visa to be safe.

Is it safe for Americans to study in Lebanon right now?

The U.S. government says no. As of August 2026 its advisory is Level 4, Do Not Travel, and it has limited ability to help U.S. citizens in an emergency. The American University of Beirut moved classes online for two days in March 2026 after threats against U.S. universities in the region.

How much does a student residence permit in Lebanon cost?

General Security's fee is LBP 15,000,000, about $168 at the official rate of LBP 89,500 to the dollar, after the 2026 budget raised it from LBP 10,000,000. Add LBP 2,000,000 (about $22) if you entered on a visitor visa, plus roughly LBP 2,500,000 (about $28) for the notarized pledge not to work.

Can international students work in Lebanon?

Not on a student permit. Students 18 and over sign a notarized pledge not to work while studying as part of the application, so plan your budget around savings, family support or loans.

How long does the Lebanese student permit take and how long is it valid?

AUB tells students to expect 1 to 2 months from the date of application. The permit is valid for 12 months and has to be renewed every year; AUB recommends starting at least five weeks before it expires.
