Honduras renews a student's permit card every year, and only if you passed your classes

Americans land visa-free, then a Honduran lawyer files for a permiso especial de permanencia. Here's the file, the rules that can end it, and how to pay when federal loans can't go to a Honduran school directly.

Time on the permit counts. Five years of it can qualify you for permanent residence in Honduras.

Honduras renews a student's permit card every year, and only if you passed your classes

How it works

A permit you file for after you land, not a visa you get at home

Honduras treats foreign students as holders of a special permanence permit (permiso especial de permanencia), not a visa. You enter visa-free, then a Honduran lawyer files your permit at the Instituto Nacional de Migración. Spain's embassy in Tegucigalpa notes no entry application is needed if you're already in the country.

File well inside your first 90 days. Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua share that clock.

What your lawyer will ask you for

Order the U.S. documents before you fly. Each one needs legalizing and an official Spanish translation, and since Honduras and the U.S. both belong to the Apostille Convention, an apostille does the legalizing for U.S. papers.

  • An admission letter from your Honduran school
  • Proof you can support yourself for the length of your studies (the regulation sets no minimum)
  • A criminal record certificate from the U.S., plus a certificate from Honduras's criminal investigation directorate (DGIC)
  • A medical certificate issued no more than six months before filing
  • A certified copy of your passport
  • A notarized power of attorney for your Honduran lawyer
  • For minors, a signed commitment from the person or institution responsible for them

Living on the permit

A job needs its own OK

The permit covers study. Working at anything you weren't authorized for can cost you the permit.

Renewal runs on your grades

Each year, bring a school letter showing you passed last year's courses and are enrolled for the next.

Long degrees are covered

Permits run up to five years, and the law lets a student's permit stretch to finish a longer program.

Family may qualify

The law lists spouses, dependent children and grandparents of permit holders for their own permits. Ask your lawyer how the institute handles this for students.

The IRS still expects you

U.S. citizens abroad file on worldwide income. Foreign accounts over $10,000 combined at any point in the year also mean an FBAR.

Plan around the advisory

The State Department rates Honduras Level 3, Reconsider travel (August 2026), and its own staff don't drive between cities after dark.

Paying for it

Federal aid mostly stays home

No school in Honduras is on the Education Department's list of foreign schools in the federal loan programs (checked September 2026), and only eligible foreign schools can certify those loans. Pell Grants don't work at any foreign school. The workaround is a study-abroad program run by your U.S. college, whose aid office handles your federal aid.

Families borrowing should know two July 2026 changes: Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers, and Parent PLUS now caps at $20,000 a year and $65,000 per student.

Prices vary a lot. Zamorano charges $25,305 a year for its Class of 2030, housing and meals included, and runs aid for students with merit and financial need. Its hybrid master's in agribusiness is $15,000. Classes in Honduras are generally in Spanish, and the academic year runs August to June.

Get the fee and timeline in writing

We couldn't find a published fee for the student permit or its card, or an official processing time, and the migration institute's student checklist was offline in September 2026. For residence files in general, a 2026 law-firm comparison estimates five to six months. Ask your lawyer for a written quote and timeline before you pay a deposit.

Studying in Honduras: questions Americans ask

How long is a Honduran student permit valid?

Special permanence permits run up to five years, and a student's can be extended to finish a longer program. The student card itself is issued for one year. To renew, you show a school letter confirming you passed the previous year's courses and are enrolled to continue.

How long can I leave Honduras without losing my student permit?

Up to six consecutive months. Staying out longer without permission from Honduran migration authorities ends a special permanence permit.

Do Americans need a visa to study in Honduras?

Not to enter. U.S. citizens can visit Honduras for up to 90 days without a visa. To stay as a student, you need a special permanence permit in the student category (permiso especial de permanencia), filed through a Honduran lawyer at the Instituto Nacional de Migración.

Can I work in Honduras on a student permit?

Not unless you're authorized. Honduras's migration regulation bars foreigners from activities other than those expressly authorized, and breaking that rule can cost you the permit.

Can I use U.S. federal student loans at a Honduran university?

Not directly. As of September 2026, no Honduran school is on the Education Department's list of foreign schools in the federal loan programs, and Pell Grants never apply at foreign schools. A study-abroad program run by your U.S. college can carry federal aid, processed by that college.

What happens if I overstay in Honduras?

You're fined for each month you stay past your authorized time, at 10% of the highest services-sector minimum wage per month. The U.S. State Department warns that overstayers face significant fines when they leave.

Does time as a student count toward permanent residence in Honduras?

Yes. Honduran law lets foreigners who've spent at least five years as legal residents or on a special permanence permit, and complied with Honduran law, apply for permanent residence (radicación definitiva).

Can I apply for the Honduran student permit after arriving as a tourist?

Yes. Spain's embassy in Tegucigalpa, describing Honduran residence procedures, says no entry application is needed when the foreigner is already in Honduras. File well before your 90 visa-free days run out, since that clock is shared with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
