El Salvador work visa: two permits, one employer, and a 10% cap

Temporary residence with work authorization is how an American takes a job with a Salvadoran company. Your employer carries much of the load, and the law limits how many foreigners it can hire.

The monthly minimum wage in commerce and services is $408.80, so this route mostly suits transfers, specialists and senior hires with a package built around them. Here's what each side files, what it costs, and where it leads.

How it works

A job offer is only the start

Americans need two approvals. The Ministry of Labor (MTPS) issues the work permit, filed online through its SIPROMA system and decided within 30 business days. Migración (DGME) issues form F3, temporary residence with authorization to work.

Central Americans skip the labor permit. U.S. citizens don't get that break.

About that data card

It lists processing at "15 days." That's faster than either approval: the labor permit alone can take up to 30 business days, and DGME gives itself 45 business days to answer a complete renewal file. Add a few items to the requirements, too: apostilled criminal records from every country you've lived in over the past two years, a Salvadoran police clearance, and Spanish translations.

The paperwork

What you file, and what your employer files

Your side

Get your U.S. papers apostilled and translated into Spanish before you go: criminal records covering every country you've lived in for the past two years, plus your diplomas. In El Salvador you'll add a police clearance (Solvencia de la PNC), your contract and the employer's commitment letter, and file form F3 with DGME.

Your employer's side

The employer files the labor permit through SIPROMA, with recent payroll records showing it stays inside the 90% staff and 85% payroll limits.

Getting in the door

U.S. citizens enter on a passport and a $12 tourist card bought on arrival. Ask your lawyer whether to file F3 from inside the country or before you fly.

The money side of a Salvadoran paycheck

Local pay scales

The minimum wage in industry, commerce and services has been $408.80 a month since June 2025. Negotiate a package that covers the U.S. costs you still carry.

Salvadoran income tax

The first $6,600 a year is exempt and the top rate is 30%, withheld by your employer. More than 200 consecutive days makes you a tax resident; non-domiciled people pay a flat 30%.

The IRS still wants a return

U.S. citizens are taxed on worldwide income. The foreign earned income exclusion shelters up to $132,900 for 2026 if you pass a test such as 330 full days abroad in 12 months.

No Social Security deal

El Salvador isn't one of the U.S. totalization partners, so no treaty sorts out double Social Security contributions. Ask a tax pro before you sign.

Staying longer

Renewals, the 90-day rule, and permanent residence

Each grant runs up to two years and renews for the same length, with a notarized letter from your employer confirming the job continues. No one stays a temporary resident past five years, and Americans can apply for permanent residence after three.

The good news is that travel got easier. Legislative Decree 531 (March 2026) replaced the old rule, which canceled residence after three consecutive months away, with a minimum of 90 days a year in the country.

The job is your status. Paid work without the right permit breaks the migration law, and rentista residence won't cover a job, since rentistas are barred from most paid work. If a company outside El Salvador is sending you, ask about DGME's separate transnational category instead.

It usually comes after three years of temporary residence. Here's the route that fits your income, what changed in 2025 and 2026, and the catch for anyone planning on citizenship.

Americans get 90 days to visit, shared with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and tourist status rules out paid work. Here's how people actually stay longer or get hired.

El Salvador work visa questions

How much does El Salvador's work residence cost?

DGME charges non-Central Americans $125 to renew temporary residence for up to one year or $240 for up to two. A secondary source puts the first grant at $140 or $260. Budget separately for apostilles, Spanish translations and a local lawyer.

Is a transfer from my U.S. company the same process?

No. DGME has a separate transnational category for people temporarily transferred to El Salvador who stay employed by a company based outside the country. Renewals for non-Central Americans cost the same $125 for one year or $240 for two.

Will I pay tax in both El Salvador and the U.S.?

El Salvador taxes local salaries on a progressive scale: the first $6,600 a year is exempt, the top rate is 30%, and employers withhold it. The U.S. taxes citizens on worldwide income, but the foreign earned income exclusion can shelter up to $132,900 for 2026.

How long can I stay on temporary residence in El Salvador?

Each grant lasts up to two years and can be renewed for equal periods, but no foreigner can be a temporary resident for more than five years. Americans can apply for permanent residence after three years of temporary residence.

Do temporary residents have to live in El Salvador full time?

No. Since a March 2026 reform, temporary residents must spend at least 90 days a year in El Salvador, in one stretch or several. Missing that minimum can cost you your status unless you can show force majeure.

Is there a limit on how many foreigners a Salvadoran company can hire?

Yes. At least 90% of an employer's staff must be Salvadoran, and at least 85% of total wages must go to Salvadoran nationals. The Ministry of Labor can allow exceptions in special circumstances.

How long does El Salvador's work visa take?

The Ministry of Labor permit can take up to 30 business days, and DGME answers complete renewal files within 45 business days. One employer-services firm reports 4 to 6 weeks overall; allow extra time to get U.S. documents apostilled and translated.

Can Americans work in El Salvador on a tourist card?

No. El Salvador's migration law treats paid work without the corresponding permit as a violation. Working for a Salvadoran employer takes temporary residence with authorization to work from DGME plus a work permit from the Ministry of Labor.
