Egypt student visa: land on a tourist visa, leave with a residency card
Most Americans studying in Cairo don't get a student visa at home. They fly in on a 30-day tourist visa and their school turns it into student residency. Here's the order, the fees in pounds and dollars, and how U.S. loans fit.
This route fits degree students at the American University in Cairo (AUC), semester-abroad students, and serious Arabic learners. It's a poor fit if you need to work off campus or hope to stay on after graduating: Egypt has no broad post-study work visa.

How it works
Why your student visa starts at passport control in Cairo
AUC tells North American students to get a visa on arrival and handle the rest in Egypt. It lasts one month, so the clock starts when you land. The State Department prices it at $36 by card at Cairo airport; AUC's page still says $25.
The week before classes, at orientation, AUC's Business Support Office starts your residency file. The permit works as a multi-entry student visa for the rest of your stay, and it only lasts as long as you're enrolled full time.
Two official answers on when to apply
The State Department says study visas must be obtained before traveling. AUC's own admission steps say to enter on a tourist visa and switch in Cairo. If your school isn't AUC, ask its international office in writing which route it uses before you book a flight.
Four steps, in order
Get accepted, then authenticate
Once you have the acceptance letter, get your diplomas and transcripts apostilled in the U.S. before you fly. Egyptian offices won't take unauthenticated copies.
Fly in on a tourist visa
Apply for the e-visa at visa2egypt.gov.eg at least 7 days ahead, or buy one on arrival. Your passport needs six months of validity past your arrival date.
File for residency
Your school preps the file for the passport and immigration office in Abbassia, Cairo. Expect a security check; some students report a medical test too.
Renew every year
The permit follows your enrollment, so renew before it expires. Filing late adds a fine of about $32 (EGP 1,685). Fees are paid with a bank receipt in dollars or another foreign currency.

The U.S. side
Paying for Egypt with federal loans
AUC is on the federal aid list (school code G05034), so Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and Parent PLUS loans work there. Pell Grants and Federal Work-Study don't, at AUC or any foreign school.
The gap is real. AUC budgets $36,558 for a U.S. undergrad's 2025-26 year, while Parent PLUS now caps at $20,000 a year. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, and most new grad borrowers top out at $20,500 a year against AUC's $31,888 grad budget.
Egypt's public universities charge international students roughly $3,000 to $6,000 a year, but confirm a school is on the federal list before counting on loans. On a semester abroad through your U.S. school, aid runs through your home campus.
What student residency won't do
It doesn't let you work off campus, though AUC students can apply for on-campus work-study. It doesn't roll into a job visa after graduation. Every trip out of Egypt needs a re-entry visa, about $16 (EGP 850), or you risk your status.
Egypt student visa questions
How much does an Egypt student residency permit cost?
AUC lists the government residency fee at EGP 7,100 (about $137 as of September 2026), the same for a first permit or a renewal. Filing late adds a fine of EGP 1,685 (about $32), and each trip out of Egypt needs a re-entry visa of EGP 850 (about $16). Fees are paid in foreign currency with a bank receipt.
How does Egypt treat U.S.-Egyptian dual citizens who study there?
Egypt considers dual citizens solely Egyptian, so you enter and leave as an Egyptian. Men aged 18 to 40 who stay longer than 180 days must settle their military status before leaving. The upside: AUC charges U.S.-Egyptian dual nationals lower tuition, $16,008 versus $17,640 for 2025-26.
How long does Egypt's student residency take?
Applicants report about 2 to 3 months from filing to receiving the card in straightforward cases, since the file includes a security check. At AUC the process starts at orientation, the week before classes begin, so you'll be studying while it's pending.
Is Egypt safe for American students?
The State Department rates Egypt Level 2, exercise increased caution, as of September 2026. Read the full advisory for the areas it asks Americans to avoid, and enroll in the State Department's STEP program when you arrive.
Can I study Arabic in Egypt on student residency?
AUC runs intensive Arabic programs for non-degree learners, teaching both Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic. Advanced students can apply to CASA@AUC, a competitive immersion program whose scholarship covers round-trip airfare up to $1,600, visa fees and monthly stipends for 12 months. Harvard's CASA site lists it for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Do I need health insurance to study in Egypt?
At AUC, every international student must enroll in the university's health plan, and no exemptions are allowed even if you have comparable U.S. coverage. It costs $190 each for the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters and $39 for a winter or summer term.
Do Americans need a student visa before flying to Egypt?
It depends on the school. The U.S. State Department says work or study visas must be obtained before traveling. The American University in Cairo tells North American students to enter on a tourist visa and then get a student residency permit in Cairo through its Business Support Office. Ask your school's international office which route it uses, in writing, before you book.
Can I use FAFSA and federal student loans to study in Egypt?
Yes at the American University in Cairo, which uses Federal School Code G05034 and certifies Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized and Parent PLUS loans. Pell Grants and Federal Work-Study aren't available at any foreign school. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, so new graduate students need another way to cover costs above the Direct Unsubsidized limit.
