Getting an Egypt residence permit as an American
There's no residence visa to request from home. You land on a tourist visa, then file in person in Egypt on the strength of property, a bank deposit, a job or an Egyptian spouse.
Permits run from six months to five years, all renewable and none permanent. Here's which route fits your money, what to bring to the passports office, and what it costs as of September 2026.

How it works
You apply in Egypt, not at a consulate
Egypt's embassy in Washington issues tourist, business and 5-year multiple-entry visas, but no residence visa. The permit itself comes from the Passports and Immigration Administration, at its Abbasiya headquarters in Cairo or a branch such as Alexandria or Luxor.
So you arrive first, then file in person while your entry visa is still valid. What you file on is the tie you bring. Egypt has no retirement category or pension-income test, so income alone won't get you a permit.

Savings or a home sale: buy property
A registered home supports a renewable permit. Guides cite $50,000 for one year, $100,000 for three and $200,000 for five. Pay in foreign currency wired from abroad through a state-owned bank, and check the title is registered: one guide puts registered Egyptian property at about 7%. A spouse, minor children and parents can usually be added.
Cash you'd rather keep liquid: a bank deposit
Guides cite $50,000 for one year and $100,000 for three, renewable while the money stays in and as long as it came from abroad.
A job offer: work residence
Your Egyptian employer files the work permit and linked residence, usually for a year. Foreign staff are capped at 10% of a firm's Egyptian workforce, and the first-year permit fee is EGP 6,000.
Married to an Egyptian
Family residence, which advisers say renews for up to five years at a time.
A pension or remote job and nothing else
Tourist residence renews every six months, but it doesn't allow work, even for a U.S. employer, and an office can shorten or refuse it. Use it as a trial run.
The property tiers aren't published
Egypt hasn't posted an official table of property or deposit amounts. Most guides use the $50,000, $100,000 and $200,000 ladder, but a Hurghada agency wrote in September 2026 that one year now takes $100,000. Officers also convert your contract at the official rate, so $99,500 fails a $100,000 test. Confirm your tier at the passports office before you sign.
What to bring to the passports office
A passport with room to spare
It has to stay valid for the permit's whole term, so renew a passport that's close to expiring first.
Bank or exchange receipt
Proof you changed dollars into pounds at a licensed bank or exchange, dated within 15 days.
Proof of your tie
A registered property contract, deposit certificate, employer's work permit or marriage certificate.
Arabic translations
Foreign documents need certified Arabic translations. Untranslated papers get turned away.
U.S. criminal record check
Property applicants report needing one, translated into Arabic.
Medical certificate
Some applicants are asked for HIV and hepatitis results from an approved Egyptian hospital.
Living on the permit
What the card lets you do, and what it doesn't
Plan on two visits: you pay when you file and come back for the card. Red Sea agents report two to four weeks for property files, and applicants say officers don't always ask for the same papers, so bring extras.
With the card, you can leave and re-enter as often as you like. There's no permanent residence in Egypt, so every permit renews, and selling the property behind yours puts it at risk.
Taxes
Spend more than 183 days in 12 months, or keep a permanent home, and you're an Egyptian tax resident. PwC's summary says residents owe tax on Egyptian income, and on foreign income only when their main business activity is in Egypt. You still file with the IRS every year; the U.S.-Egypt tax treaty dates to 1980.
Citizenship
The standard route takes ten years of residence. A 2018 law added a shortcut: hold EGP 7 million on deposit for five straight years, then apply, and the deposit goes to the treasury once you're naturalized. Egypt allows dual citizenship with government approval, but it treats dual U.S.-Egyptian nationals as Egyptian only.

Egypt residence questions
How long does an Egypt residence permit last?
It depends on the route. Tourist residence renews every six months, work residence usually runs a year, and property-backed permits run one, three or five years depending on the property's value. Egypt has no permanent residence, so every permit has to be renewed.
What happens if I overstay in Egypt?
Egyptian rules set a fine of at least EGP 1,000 for the first three months of overstay, rising 50% for each further three months, and deportation is possible. File for residence or a renewal before your current visa or permit runs out.
Does residence in Egypt lead to citizenship?
It can. The standard route requires ten years of residence. A 2018 law also lets a foreigner who keeps EGP 7 million on deposit for five straight years apply, with the deposit going to the treasury on naturalization. Egypt allows dual citizenship with government approval, so Americans don't have to give up U.S. citizenship.
Can my spouse and children get Egyptian residence with me?
Usually, yes. Guides to property and bank deposit residence say a spouse, minor children and senior parents can be included in the main applicant's residence.
Does Egypt have a retirement visa?
No. Egypt has no retirement category and no pension-income test. Retirees usually qualify by buying registered property (guides cite $50,000 for a one-year permit) or by keeping a deposit wired from abroad in an Egyptian bank.
Can I apply for an Egypt residence permit from the U.S.?
No. Egypt's embassy in Washington issues tourist, business and 5-year multiple-entry visas, not residence permits. You enter Egypt first, then apply in person at the Passports and Immigration Administration, in Abbasiya, Cairo, or a regional branch, while your entry visa is still valid.
Can I work remotely for a U.S. company on an Egyptian residence permit?
Not on tourist or property residence. A Cairo law firm notes that residence granted for tourism doesn't allow work even when the employer is outside Egypt, and property residence carries no work rights. Legal work requires a work permit filed by an Egyptian employer.
How much does an Egypt residence permit cost?
Immigration firm Fragomen reported that the fee for a residence application or renewal rose to $150 in 2024, up from $70. You pay by converting dollars into pounds at a licensed bank or exchange and bringing the receipt. Some guides still quote lower amounts, so confirm the fee at the office. Any property purchase or bank deposit is on top of that.

Egypt student visa: land on a tourist visa, leave with a residency card
Most Americans studying in Cairo don't get a student visa at home. They fly in on a 30-day tourist visa and their school turns it into student residency. Here's the order, the fees in pounds and dollars, and how U.S. loans fit.
