A Danish degree comes with three years to find a job afterward

Denmark's student residence permit costs DKK 3,060 (about $466) and normally takes two months. Here's what Americans pay, how to fund it now that Grad PLUS is closed, and which programs keep your full rights.

Your spouse can work from day one, and you can work 90 hours a month during term. The hard part for Americans is money: Pell Grants don't apply abroad, and only two Danish schools appear on the U.S. Education Department's loan list.

Who it's for

Your program's approval status decides what you get

This permit is for students admitted to a Danish higher education program at a school the Danish government has approved. You'll need to follow teaching in its language, and more than 500 programs are taught in English.

State-approved or not

Most Americans land at a state-approved university, and that's the version you want. If you applied on or after May 2, 2025 to a non-state-approved program, you get no work rights, no job-seeking permit after graduation, and no permit for your spouse or partner. Ask admissions which kind yours is before you pay a deposit.

Who should think twice

If you're counting on U.S. federal loans to cover tuition, read the money section below before you apply.

Proof of funds, the Danish way

You'll show DKK 7,426 a month for your program, up to 12 months: at most DKK 89,112 (about $13,560) in 2026. A bank statement in your name, under 30 days old, works, and so does a scholarship. If your program charges tuition and you've already paid the first semester, SIRI accepts that as documentation instead. Crypto doesn't count.

Paying for it

How an American pays for a Danish degree in 2026

Non-EU tuition typically runs €6,000 to €16,000 a year (about $6,800 to $18,200), and the EU puts student living costs at €1,000 to €1,700 a month (about $1,140 to $1,940).

U.S. aid mostly stays home

Pell Grants never work at foreign schools. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, and graduate students now top out at $20,500 a year in Direct Loans ($100,000 total). The Education Department's list names two Danish schools, Aarhus University and Copenhagen Business School, and Aarhus now says it no longer takes Direct Loans. Confirm with CBS before you count on them.

Danish scholarships

A limited number of state tuition waivers and scholarships go to talented non-EU master's students. At Roskilde University the stipend is DKK 7,800 a month (about $1,190). You're only considered for the semester you're admitted, so apply with your application.

Tuition comes due early

At the University of Copenhagen, first-semester tuition for a September start is due April 15.

Arrive and register

Anyone from outside the Nordics staying over three months gets a CPR number. Your residence card is mailed to that address.

Your first months

Line up housing before anything else

CPR registration needs a Danish housing contract or offer, so the apartment comes first. In Copenhagen it's the hardest part: the University of Copenhagen calls the search difficult, especially July to September, with rent from DKK 4,000 to 10,000 a month (about $610 to $1,520). Landlords commonly want three months' rent up front plus a three-month deposit. Never send money for a room you haven't seen in person or on a live video call.

Health coverage

Students staying more than three months get Danish public healthcare once registered, and the card can take up to two weeks to arrive. Bring travel coverage for the weeks before that.

While you study, and after

Work hours, family and the three-year runway

Working

You can work 90 hours a month from September to May and full time in June, July and August. Go a few hours over and you'll get a warning that lasts two years; go well over and SIRI revokes your permit immediately.

Bringing family

Your spouse, registered or cohabiting partner, and children under 18 can come. Each pays DKK 3,080 (about $469), needs the same DKK 7,426 a month in funds, and lives at your address. Partners can work without a separate permit. For a couple, that's DKK 6,140 in fees (about $934) and up to DKK 178,224 (about $27,120) in first-year funds.

After graduation

Finish a state-approved bachelor's, master's or PhD and SIRI normally grants a three-year job-seeking period along with your study permit, if your passport is valid long enough. Your work limits stay the same until you move to a work permit. Denmark allows dual citizenship, though naturalizing takes nine years of residence and Danish at test level 3.

Denmark student permit questions

Can my spouse come with me and work in Denmark?

Yes, if you're in a state-approved program. Spouses, registered or cohabiting partners and children under 18 can apply. Each pays DKK 3,080 and shows DKK 7,426 a month in funds. Partners can work without a separate permit and must live at your Danish address.

Can I apply for a Danish student permit from inside Denmark?

Often, yes. Americans can visit Denmark visa-free for up to 90 days, and SIRI says people legally in Denmark can normally submit the application there. Your biometrics must be recorded within 14 days, at a SIRI branch office by appointment.

How much does a Danish student residence permit cost in 2026?

The processing fee is DKK 3,060, about $466 as of September 2026. An extension costs the same. Each accompanying family member pays DKK 3,080, about $469.

How long can I leave Denmark on a student permit?

No more than six months in a row, and you can't give up your Danish address. Breaking either rule makes the permit lapse, though SIRI lets you apply for a dispensation if a long absence is necessary.

How much money do I need to show to study in Denmark?

DKK 7,426 a month in 2026 (about $1,130), for up to 12 months, so at most DKK 89,112 (about $13,560). A bank statement in your name or a scholarship works. If you've already paid first-semester tuition, SIRI accepts that as documentation. Crypto isn't accepted.

Can I use U.S. federal student loans to study in Denmark?

Only at a Danish school that takes Direct Loans, and few do. The Education Department lists Aarhus University and Copenhagen Business School, but Aarhus says it no longer participates. Pell Grants never apply at foreign schools, and Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026.

Can I stay in Denmark after I graduate?

Graduates of state-approved bachelor's, master's and PhD programs normally get a three-year job-seeking period, granted along with the study permit if your passport is valid long enough. You keep the student work limits until you move to a work permit.

How long does Denmark take to decide a student residence permit?

SIRI's normal processing time is two months, and up to three months if it needs more information. Extensions normally take three months, and you can file one no earlier than four months before your permit expires.
