Botswana's work permit, for Americans with a job offer in hand
You'll file two permits, a work permit and a residence permit, at 1,500 pula (about $110) each. Your employer's paperwork matters as much as yours.
This route is for people who already have, or are chasing, a job with a Botswana employer. If your income comes from a U.S. company or your savings, this isn't your permit, and Botswana has no digital nomad visa to fall back on.

How it fits together
A work permit and a residence permit, filed side by side
Botswana splits the job into two approvals. The work permit, under the Employment of Non-Citizens Act, lets you earn money. The residence permit lets you live there. You need both.
Americans don't need a visa to enter: you get up to 90 days visa-free in any 365-day period. The six-month employment visa you may read about is for nationalities that need a visa, and it requires a valid work and residence permit first.

The paperwork
What goes in your file
The government's list for the work permit is short, but every item has to be current. Budget extra time for anything that needs certifying or translating into English.
The residence permit is a separate file: Forms 15 and 3, a passport copy, your birth certificate, a photo and proof of financial support. The U.S. State Department notes that residency applicants need apostilled birth and marriage certificates from their U.S. state.
- A job advertisement no older than 6 months
- Your employment contract and offer letter
- A CV with certified copies of your qualifications
- A copy of your passport's photo page
- Two passport photos on a white background
- Clearance from your professional body if you're in medicine, teaching, accounting or aviation
The steps, in order
Your employer searches locally first
The employer has to show it tried to hire a citizen. The law also asks how it plans to train a citizen to take over your role.
File the work permit
At a regional Labour Office in Botswana, or through the embassy in Washington, D.C. The official target is 14 working days.
File the residence permit
A separate application with the immigration department. The official target is 30 working days.
Renew early
Renewals are due 6 months before your permit expires. A refusal can be appealed to the minister within 30 days.
Here's the catch
Official timelines are targets. A law firm that handles these files puts the real wait at about 3 months from submission to issuance; it describes a points test where applicants need 72 of 120 points. Scarce skills score highest. Start working without a permit and you risk a fine of up to 1,000 pula or up to 12 months in prison.
After you land
Family, taxes and the long game

Your family
A spouse and kids can get residence as your dependents, tied to your permit's dates. A spouse on a dependent permit can't work without a work permit of their own.
Your contract
Botswana's Employment and Labour Relations Act took effect September 1, 2026. It caps probation at 6 months and generally limits fixed-term contracts to 12 months unless there's an objective reason for longer, so read your renewal terms closely.
Taxes on both sides
You're tax resident after 183 days in Botswana in a tax year. Residents pay 0% on the first 48,000 pula (about $3,500), rising to 25% above 156,000 pula (about $11,400). There are no social security contributions. The U.S. still taxes you, and there's no U.S.-Botswana tax treaty, so plan your Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (330 full days abroad in 12 months) and foreign tax credits early.
Staying for good
After 5 years of lawful residence you can apply for permanent residence, for 3,000 pula (about $220). Citizenship takes 10 years and means renouncing your U.S. citizenship.

Botswana work permit questions
How long does a Botswana work permit take?
The government lists 14 working days for a work permit and 30 working days for a residence permit. The embassy in Washington says to allow at least 21 working days. A law firm that files these permits puts the real wait at about 3 months, so build slack into your start date.
Can I work remotely for a U.S. company while visiting Botswana?
There's no digital nomad visa in Botswana, and visitor status doesn't cover local employment. Working for a foreign employer from Botswana is a gray area with no official guidance, so check with a Botswana immigration lawyer before planning a long remote stint.
Can my spouse work in Botswana if I have a work permit?
Not on a dependent permit. Your spouse and children can get residence as your dependents, with dates tied to your permit, but a spouse who wants a job needs a work permit of their own, backed by their own employer.
Does a Botswana work permit lead to permanent residence?
It can. After at least 5 years of lawful residence, you can apply for permanent residence, and your past work and residence permits serve as proof of your stay. The fee is 3,000 pula (about $220). Citizenship takes 10 years of residence and requires renouncing U.S. citizenship.
How much does a Botswana work permit cost?
As of September 2026, a work permit costs 1,500 pula (about $110), and the residence permit you file alongside it costs another 1,500 pula. Renewing either one costs 1,500 pula again. The Botswana Embassy in Washington lists its residence permit application fee as $165 when you file there.
Can I apply for a Botswana work permit from the United States?
Yes. You can file through the consular section of the Botswana Embassy in Washington, D.C., which takes money orders, cashier's checks or company checks but not personal checks or cash. You can also file at a regional Labour Office in Botswana, in Gaborone, Francistown, Lobatse, Maun, Selibe Phikwe or Kasane.
Will I pay tax in both Botswana and the U.S.?
Possibly. Botswana taxes you as a resident after 183 days in a tax year, with rates from 0% up to 25%. The U.S. taxes its citizens wherever they live, and there's no U.S.-Botswana tax treaty. Most Americans use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion or foreign tax credits to avoid paying twice.
Do Americans need a visa to work in Botswana?
Americans don't need a visa to enter Botswana and can stay up to 90 days in a 365-day period, but that stay doesn't allow a local job. To work, you need a work permit under the Employment of Non-Citizens Act plus a residence permit. Working without a permit can bring a fine of up to 1,000 pula or up to 12 months in prison.
Other ways to live in Botswana
Investing in Botswana: the permits an American actually files
Americans skip the investor visa. What you need is a residence permit plus a work permit, both backed by a business that's already up and running.
Botswana student visa: what Americans file instead
There's no study visa for U.S. passports. You arrive visa-free, then file a residence permit tied to your school that costs about $110.
Plan the move around the permit, not the other way around
Talk it through with an Expatsi advisor: timing, family, taxes and what to ask your employer before you sign.
