Botswana student visa: what Americans file instead

There's no study visa for U.S. passports. You arrive visa-free, then file a residence permit tied to your school that costs about $110.

Classes are in English, and most undergraduate programs at the University of Botswana cost 56,100 pula a year (about $4,100). The trade-off: you can't take a paid job, and federal grants don't follow you there.

How it works

No visa, one permit, filed through your school

Botswana's study visa is only for nationalities that need a visa to get in. Americans don't. You fly in visa-free, register at your school, and file a residence permit at an immigration office. Bring these:

  • Forms 15 and 3, plus two passport photos on a white background
  • A certified copy of a passport valid for your whole program
  • An admission letter naming your program and how long it runs
  • A receipt showing your tuition is paid
  • A sponsor letter and proof of funds (UB asks self-funded students for 3 months of bank statements)
  • A certified birth certificate, apostilled in the U.S. before you leave
  • A medical report

Before you fly, or after you land?

Government pages list only immigration offices inside Botswana, and BIUST says student permits are processed within 90 days of arrival. Some private agencies say to apply before you enter. Your school's international office handles this every term, so follow its instructions. At UB, exchange students staying up to six months file a residence waiver instead of a full permit.

What the permit does and doesn't cover

No paid work

The Immigration Act bars non-citizens from any paid work without a work permit, and a student permit isn't one.

Campus beds go to you first

UB gives international students priority for its limited housing: 7,740 pula (about $570) a year for undergraduates, 13,080 pula (about $960) in graduate hostels.

Bring health coverage

UB advises international students to carry medical insurance. Local student plans exist, but pre-existing conditions can face a two-year wait for hospital coverage.

Overstays cost you

Staying past your permission means a 100-pula daily fine, capped at 1,000 pula (about $73), or one month to a year in jail.

Passport rules at the border

Six months' validity past arrival and departure, three blank pages, and no 12-page emergency passports.

Not a path to a second passport

Naturalizing takes 10 years of residence and means giving up your U.S. citizenship.

Paying for it

Federal loans maybe, Pell Grants never

UB's 2025-26 fees for non-residents: 56,100 pula (about $4,100) a year for most undergraduate programs, 74,700 pula (about $5,500) in science and engineering, and 39,360 pula (about $2,900) for most master's degrees.

Federal Direct Loans work abroad only at a school on the Education Department's approved foreign school list, with at least half-time enrollment in an in-person program. We couldn't confirm any Botswana university on that list, so check the FAFSA school search, filtered by foreign country, before you count on a loan. Pell Grants never apply abroad. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, which caps most graduate students at $20,500 a year in Direct Loans.

Botswana student permit questions

How long does a Botswana student residence permit take?

The government lists 30 working days, about six weeks. BIUST says it processes student permits within 90 days of a student's arrival, which fits inside the visa-free window for U.S. citizens.

What happens if I overstay in Botswana?

Under the Immigration Act, the fine is 100 pula for each day, capped at 1,000 pula (about $73), or one month to a year in jail, or both. You can also be removed from the country.

How much is tuition at the University of Botswana for Americans?

For 2025-26, non-resident undergraduates pay 56,100 pula a year (about $4,100) in most faculties and 74,700 pula (about $5,500) in science and engineering. Most master's programs cost 39,360 pula (about $2,900), and the MBA is 57,120 pula (about $4,200).

Can I use U.S. federal student loans to study in Botswana?

Only if the school is on the U.S. Department of Education's approved foreign school list and you're enrolled at least half-time in an in-person program. Pell Grants can't be used abroad, and Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026. Check the FAFSA school search, filtered by foreign country, before you enroll.

Do Americans need a student visa to study in Botswana?

No. Botswana's study visa is only for nationalities that need a visa to enter, and U.S. citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. To study, Americans need a residence permit tied to their school, which costs 1,500 pula (about $110 as of September 2026).

Can I work in Botswana on a student permit?

No. Botswana's Immigration Act bars non-citizens from paid work unless they hold a work permit or an exemption certificate, and a student residence permit is neither.

Does studying in Botswana lead to citizenship?

Not for most Americans. Naturalization needs 10 years of cumulative residence, including the final year without a break, and Botswana requires you to renounce your other citizenship.

Are university classes in Botswana taught in English?

Yes. Schooling in Botswana is conducted in English from the fourth year of primary school onward, and university programs are taught in English.
