Investing in Botswana: the permits an American actually files

Americans skip the investor visa. What you need is a residence permit plus a work permit, both backed by a business that's already up and running.

U.S. citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, which is enough time to register a company and look at premises. Staying on to run it takes two permits, and the government publishes no minimum investment for either.

Why the investor visa isn't your form

Botswana does sell an investor visa, US$100 for six months or US$250 for five years, but it's an entry visa for nationalities that need one. Americans don't.

Your real paperwork is a residence permit and a work permit. The law counts investing for profit as work, so owners need both.

Step by step

Build the company, then file the two permits

Both permits ask for proof the business exists and is trading, so the company comes first. BITC, Botswana's investment agency, runs a one-stop service center that helps with company registration, land, utility connections and permits for essential staff.

  • Register the company and get your trade license. Tax registration usually takes about a week, 14 days at most.
  • Residence permit: Form 15, a Form 3 medical report, certified passport copy, birth certificate, photo and covering letter, plus company registration papers, a company profile, a certified bank statement and employee and asset lists. Expect to add a police clearance.
  • Work permit: bank statements, your lease, company registration documents, an employee list, certified trade licenses and the company profile. Certificates not in English need translations certified by the Botswana Qualifications Authority.
  • Fees: the government doesn't post an investor fee online. The embassy and business guides cite $165 for a residence permit and about 1,500 pula (about $110) per permit.
  • Renewals: a work permit's length is set case by case and printed on it. File the renewal six months before it runs out.

Check your business type before you sign a lease

Botswana reserves a list of small businesses for citizens, including car washes, cleaning services, general dealers, hair and beauty salons, laundromats, cellphone shops and takeaways. A foreigner can join a restricted business only through a joint venture where citizens own at least 51%. Government contracts under $900,000 have also been set aside for citizen-owned firms.

The long game

Permanent residence comes early. Citizenship costs your U.S. passport.

The usual bar for permanent residence is five years of continuous lawful residence. Investors can apply sooner if they show real investment, payroll records and certified business papers. The fee is 3,000 pula (about $220).

Citizenship is a different story. Naturalization takes 10 years of residence out of the last 12, plus Setswana, and the government asks you to renounce your foreign citizenship.

The investor passport that's still on hold

A law passed in December 2025 created an investor citizenship route, with contributions starting at US$75,000. As of August 2026, its portal only took registrations of interest. Don't pay anyone to apply yet.

Botswana investor permits: common questions

Which businesses can't foreigners own in Botswana?

Botswana reserves a list of small businesses for citizens under its Trade Act, including car washes, cleaning services, general dealers, hair and beauty salons, laundromats, cellphone shops, takeaways and pre-owned car dealers. Foreigners can take part in a reserved business only through a joint venture in which citizens own at least 51%.

How are American business owners taxed in Botswana?

You're generally tax resident with a permanent home in Botswana and at least 183 days there in the tax year or the year before. Resident rates run from 0% on the first 48,000 pula (about $3,500) to 25% above 156,000 pula (about $11,400), and dividends face 10% withholding. The U.S. still taxes you on worldwide income, Botswana has no income tax treaty with the U.S., and foreign accounts above the threshold must be reported on an FBAR.

Will I have to give up U.S. citizenship to become a citizen of Botswana?

Through standard naturalization, yes. You need 10 years of residence in the last 12, including the 12 months right before you apply, plus knowledge of Setswana, and the government asks applicants to renounce their foreign citizenship. A separate investor citizenship law passed in December 2025, but as of August 2026 it was only taking registrations of interest, not applications.

Do Americans need an investor visa to move to Botswana?

No. U.S. citizens can enter Botswana without a visa for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. Botswana's investor visa (US$100 for six months or US$250 for five years) is an entry visa for nationalities that need one. To live in Botswana and run a business, an American needs a residence permit and a work permit instead.

How long do Botswana residence and work permits take?

The government lists 30 working days for a residence permit and 14 working days for a work permit, and the Botswana embassy in Washington says at least 21 working days for residence. The U.S. State Department lists permit processing times among the obstacles foreign investors face in Botswana, so leave slack in your plans.

Can my spouse and children come with me to Botswana?

Yes, as dependents on residence permits. Dependents aged 18 to 25 or 65 and older file their own application, with a 1,500-pula fee (about $110 in September 2026). Under the Employment of Non-Citizens Act, any non-citizen who works for pay needs a work permit or an exemption, so a spouse who wants a job needs one of their own.

Is there a minimum investment for a Botswana investor permit?

The government doesn't publish one. Applications are judged on the business itself: company registration, bank statements, a lease, employee lists and certified trade licenses. A Botswana-registered lawyer or the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) can tell you what the offices currently expect.

Can investors get permanent residence in Botswana faster?

Yes. The usual requirement is five years of continuous lawful residence, but investors can apply sooner if they show business investment, employee wage records and certified business documents. The fee is 3,000 pula (about $220 in September 2026). The government lists both 56 working days and six months for processing, so plan on the longer figure.
