The Barbados work permit: your employer files, and you wait

No job offer, no permit. Here's what a Barbados employer has to prove, what it costs, and how the permit can turn into long-term residence.

Americans can visit Barbados visa-free for up to six months, but visiting isn't working. To take a job on the island, a Barbados employer has to sponsor you, show no local candidate fits, and file the permit before your first paid day.

How it works

The application belongs to your employer

You don't apply on your own. The employer acts as your sponsor and files with the Barbados Immigration Department.

For a long-term permit, they must show no Barbadian national or resident is qualified and willing to do the job. Proof of local newspaper ads is common.

  • Short-term permit: up to eleven months
  • Long-term permit: up to three years, then reapply
  • Self-employed? Show proof of funds transfer, business registration and licenses

The paperwork

What your employer submits, and what slows it down

Bring originals and photocopies of everything. The fee is due when you file; no fee, no application.

The most common holdups are missing documents and thin proof that the job was advertised locally.

  • Forms C-1 and C-2, plus a cover letter from the employer explaining why they need you
  • Medical form with X-rays
  • Proof of your qualifications
  • Police certificate from your home country
  • Passport photos and a copy of your passport's photo page

Barbados is rewriting its immigration law

The Immigration Bill 2026 went to Parliament in April 2026 and was sent to a joint select committee. It would put "reside and work" permits into law, three years at a time, and drop the separate immigrant category. It hadn't become law in the sources we checked for this update. Until it does, the current rules on this page apply.

Money and family

Pay, payroll deductions and your spouse

The Barbados dollar is fixed at BBD 2 to $1, so your pay doesn't swing with exchange rates.

Your spouse can come with you but gets no automatic right to work. They'd need their own permit.

  • 2026 income tax: 11.5% on BBD 25,001 to 75,000 ($12,500 to $37,500), 27.5% above that
  • National Insurance: 11% from your pay, 12.75% from your employer
  • Minimum wage: BBD 10.71 (about $5.36) an hour since January 2026
  • Hospitals and doctors expect payment up front, so arrange health coverage before you land

Other ways to live and earn in Barbados

Working remotely for a U.S. employer

The Welcome Stamp covers remote work for employers outside Barbados. It needs at least $50,000 a year in outside income and health insurance, and it doesn't allow local jobs.

Starting your own business

You still need a permit. Expect to prove the money came in from abroad and show your business registration and licenses.

The CARICOM route

The CARICOM Skills Certificate lets Caribbean nationals work without a permit. Only CARICOM nationals qualify, so it's not open to U.S. passport holders.

Staying longer

From work permit to permanent residence

Work permit time counts toward residence. After five years of lawful residence, you'll usually get immigrant status (BBD 300 to apply, BBD 1,200 if approved). Five more years makes you eligible for permanent residence.

Here's the catch: a permanent resident who lives abroad for a continuous year loses the status unless the minister grants an exemption.

Barbados work permit questions

How much does a Barbados work permit cost?

The application fee is BBD 300 (about $150), due when the application is filed. The Immigration Department says the final fee depends on the type of work and the permit length. One local business guide puts the approval fee at roughly BBD 1,500 (about $750).

How long does a Barbados work permit take?

Local business guides put processing at about six to eight weeks. The Immigration Department doesn't publish a standard timeline. Missing documents and weak proof of local job advertising are the usual causes of delays.

Can I go to Barbados as a tourist and then look for work?

You can visit visa-free for up to six months and meet employers. You can't start paid work until the permit is approved. Working without one is an offense that can bring a BBD 5,000 (about $2,500) fine, up to 12 months in prison, or both.

Can I work for a Barbados company on the Welcome Stamp?

No. The Welcome Stamp is for remote work for employers outside Barbados and doesn't allow local employment. A job with a Barbados company needs a work permit.

Does a Barbados work permit lead to permanent residence?

It can. Time on a work permit counts toward the five years of lawful residence that usually earns immigrant status. After five more years with immigrant status, you can apply for permanent residence. A 2026 bill in Parliament may change these rules.

Can my spouse work in Barbados if I have a work permit?

Not automatically. A spouse or dependent who comes with a work permit holder doesn't get the right to work. Your spouse would need their own permit, sponsored by their own employer.

Can I apply for a Barbados work permit myself?

No. A Barbados employer applies on your behalf as your sponsor. For a long-term permit, the employer also has to show that no qualified and willing Barbadian national or resident can do the job.

Do I still pay U.S. taxes while working in Barbados?

Yes, you still owe U.S. tax on your worldwide income. The foreign earned income exclusion can shield some of your pay if you pass a test such as the physical presence test: 330 full days abroad in any 12 consecutive months.
