Barbados permanent residence: a 10-year road for most Americans
The government fees come to about $750. The wait is the hard part: you need immigrant status first, then five years living on the island as an immigrant.
Written for U.S. passport holders and checked against the Immigration Act and the Barbados Immigration Department as of September 2026.

The status you earn, not the one you buy
Permanent residence is Barbados's top tier short of citizenship, and it brings free care at the public hospital. You can't apply for it on arrival. Most Americans qualify only after about a decade on the island. It's a goal for people already living there, not a way in.

About that data card
Our listing says "Proof of continuous residence in Barbados (typically 5 years)." The Immigration Act asks for five years as an immigrant, counted after you're granted immigrant status. It also lists "Proof of financial means," which the Immigration Department's PR checklist doesn't include; your means are tested earlier, when you apply for immigrant status. Government fees total BBD 1,500 (about $750), not $10,000. We've logged these for correction.
Two applications, about a decade apart
Barbados keeps immigrant status and permanent residence separate. Immigrant status already lets you live and work there indefinitely. Permanent residence comes second, under Section 5 of the Immigration Act. Each costs BBD 300 to apply and BBD 1,200 on approval, and the department doesn't publish processing times.
- Live in Barbados lawfully, usually for at least five years
- Apply for immigrant status, showing qualifications or enough money to support yourself and dependents
- Live there at least five more years as an immigrant
- Apply for permanent residence with police certificates, a medical form (age 16 and up) and your documents
How Americans get their first five years
Buying a home (retirees)
The Special Entry and Reside Permit for property owners asks for a home worth at least $300,000. Apply at 60 or older and the permit can be indefinite. Holders can't work, and the rules are policy, not law, so they can change.
Taking a local job
A Barbados employer sponsors your work permit. Five years of lawful residence is the usual bar for immigrant status.
Working remotely
The Welcome Stamp covers one renewable year of remote work, but it doesn't convert into permanent residence. Ask Immigration how your stamp years will be treated before you count on them.
Family ties to Barbados
Descendants of Barbadian citizens can get immigrant status in under five years. Under the current Act, the husband of a citizen by birth or descent can register as a permanent resident directly.
The rules may change soon
An Immigration Bill and a Citizenship Bill, laid in Parliament on April 21, 2026, would add a points-based route (10 points minimum) and give spouses of any citizen and direct descendants of citizens a right to register as permanent residents. As of August 2026, they were still bills, not law. Even after passing, they'll need a proclamation to take effect.
Life as a permanent resident
The good news is that the public hospital becomes free. The catch is tax and time away.
- Healthcare: the Queen Elizabeth Hospital gives free hospital treatment to citizens and permanent residents
- Staying away: voluntarily living outside Barbados for a continuous year ends your status, unless the Minister issues a certificate first
- Barbados tax: you're tax resident after more than 182 days in a calendar year; if you're also domiciled there, Barbados taxes your worldwide income, with a BBD 40,000 (about $20,000) allowance for pensioners
- U.S. tax: the IRS still taxes your worldwide income, so you'll file in both countries
- Citizenship: the Minister may naturalize a foreigner who lived there the 12 months before applying and at least five of the seven years before that, and Barbados allows dual citizenship

Barbados permanent residence: common questions
Does the Barbados Welcome Stamp lead to permanent residence?
No, the Welcome Stamp doesn't convert into permanent residence. It's a renewable one-year permit for remote workers. If you hope your stamp years will count toward immigrant status, confirm how they'll be treated with the Barbados Immigration Department before you rely on them.
Can I lose permanent residence in Barbados?
Yes. Under the Immigration Act, a permanent resident who voluntarily lives outside Barbados for a continuous year loses the status, unless they get a certificate from the Minister. Serious crime and giving false information can also cost you the status.
Can a permanent resident become a Barbados citizen and keep a U.S. passport?
Barbados allows dual citizenship. Americans can apply to be naturalized after living in Barbados for the 12 months before applying and for at least five of the seven years before that. Naturalization is at the Minister's discretion and requires good character.
Can I buy property to get permanent residence in Barbados?
Not directly. A home worth at least $300,000 can qualify you for a Special Entry and Reside Permit, which lets you live in Barbados but isn't permanent residence. Barbados has no citizenship-by-investment program either.
How much does Barbados permanent residence cost?
The government fees are BBD 300 (about $150) when you apply and BBD 1,200 (about $600) if you're approved, so about $750 in total as of 2026. Fees are due on submission and personal checks aren't accepted. Budget separately for police certificates, a medical exam, translations and any lawyer.
Is Barbados changing its permanent residence rules?
Possibly. Bills laid in Parliament on April 21, 2026 would add a points-based route and let spouses of citizens and direct descendants of citizens register as permanent residents. As of August 2026 they weren't law, and they'd still need a proclamation to take effect after passing.
Do permanent residents get free healthcare in Barbados?
Yes, at the public hospital. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides free hospital treatment to citizens and permanent residents. Everyone else may be asked to pay, so newcomers need private health insurance until they qualify.
How long does it take an American to get permanent residence in Barbados?
Usually 10 years or more. You first need immigrant status, which is usually granted after at least five years of lawful residence, and then you must live in Barbados at least five more years as an immigrant before you can apply for permanent residence. Descendants of Barbadian citizens and people with highly desirable skills can get immigrant status sooner.
