Already working in Bahrain? Five years on BHD 2,000 a month can make your residency permanent

The resident route to Bahrain's Golden Residency costs about $810 in government fees and doesn't need an employer sponsor. Here's who qualifies as of September 2026, what it changes, and what it won't do.

This is the Golden Residency category for foreigners who already live in Bahrain as employees or retirees. You qualify on your track record in the country, not on an investment.

Who it fits

For long-haul residents, not newcomers

Employees need five years of work in Bahrain at about $5,300 a month or more (BHD 2,000). Retirees who worked here need 15 years and a pension above that same BHD 2,000.

Coming straight from the U.S.? Look at Bahrain's property and retiree-from-abroad categories instead.

About that data card

Our card says holders "must spend at least 90 days in Bahrain per year." That was the rule when the program launched in 2022. Newer private sources say there's no minimum stay now, but we couldn't confirm it with the government, so ask NPRA before planning long stretches away. We've hidden the card's document list because it doesn't match NPRA's; the real list is in the application steps on this page.

What it changes day to day

Work

Your employer still gets you an LMRA work permit: BHD 195 (about $520) for one year or BHD 390 for two, plus a BHD 5 fee. Switching jobs means canceling the old permit first.

Family

You can sponsor your spouse, children and parents. Budget for their health coverage: employers only insure dependents if your contract says so.

Taxes

Bahrain has no personal income tax, and it doesn't tax income earned outside the country. Since January 2026, end-of-service pay is funded monthly and claimed from the SIO.

Applying

What NPRA asks for

Apply through NPRA with a salary certificate showing at least BHD 2,000, a medical insurance certificate issued in Bahrain, six months of bank statements, and your previous residence permit. Pay the BHD 5 fee up front.

Once you're approved, you have 30 days to pay the BHD 300 issuance fee, or the application is automatically canceled.

Check the travel advisory

In August 2026, the U.S. State Department rated Bahrain Level 3, reconsider travel. It cites terrorism, the ongoing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran, and significant disruptions to commercial flights. It belongs in any 10-year plan.

Bahrain Golden Residency questions

Will my U.S. health insurance work for a Bahrain Golden Residency application?

No. NPRA asks for a medical insurance certificate issued in Bahrain. Under Law No. 23 of 2018, Bahraini employers must insure their foreign workers, so if you're employed, your work policy is the usual starting point.

Do Americans living in Bahrain still owe U.S. income tax?

Bahrain has no personal income tax, but the U.S. taxes citizens wherever they live. For tax year 2026, the foreign earned income exclusion can shelter up to $132,900 of wages if you're a bona fide resident abroad or spend 330 full days abroad in 12 months. Pensions and Social Security aren't earned income, so the exclusion doesn't cover them.

Can I get Bahrain's Golden Residency if I don't live in Bahrain yet?

Not through the resident category, which is based on years of work or retirement in Bahrain. From abroad, the options are buying property worth at least BHD 130,000 (about $345,000), a pension over BHD 4,000 a month for retirees who never worked there, or the talent category for people with exceptional skills.

Does Bahrain's Golden Residency lead to citizenship?

No. It carries no direct path to Bahraini citizenship, and Bahrain generally doesn't allow dual citizenship. For Americans, that makes it a long-term residence, not a second-passport route.

Do I need an employer sponsor with Bahrain's Golden Residency?

No. The residency itself doesn't need an employer sponsor. To work, though, each employer applies to Bahrain's Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) for your work permit, and a previous permit has to be canceled before a new one is issued. Partners in their own company don't need a separate permit.

How long does Bahrain's Golden Residency last?

Bahrain's residency authority, NPRA, calls it a permanent residency. You pay an administrative fee of BHD 300 (about $795) every 10 years.
