Bahamas Annual Work Permit: the employer-sponsored route for Americans

A Bahamian employer files it, a Bahamians-first hiring test comes before it, and the yearly fee runs from $500 to $16,275 depending on your job title.

Got a job offer in The Bahamas that lasts more than 90 days? This is the permit you'll need. You can't apply on your own: your employer sponsors you, shows no qualified Bahamian wants the role, and files while you wait outside the country.

Bahamas Annual Work Permit: the employer-sponsored route for Americans

Annual Work Permit

For foreigners hired by a Bahamian employer for more than 90 days. The employer usually has to show no Bahamian can fill the role through a labour certificate and newspaper ads, and the permit fee depends on the job's pay scale. After 20 consecutive years on work permits you can apply for permanent residence.

Timeline
Up to 1 year, renewable; permanent residence possible after long periods on work permits (10-20+ years depending on scale)
Difficulty
Hard

Key requirements

  • Job offer from a Bahamian employer for more than 90 days
  • Labour Certificate with Notification of Vacancy from the Department of Labour (not required for Fee Scale 1 roles or Scale 2 owner's representatives/consultants)
  • Job advertised for 3 consecutive days in a nationally circulated newspaper
  • Annual permit fee by occupation scale, from $500 (Scale 9) to $16,275 plus 5% levy (Scale 1 executives)
  • Medical certificate within 30 days and police certificate covering 5 years of residence
  • $200 non-refundable processing fee

Is this your route?

It starts with a Bahamian company that wants you

Your paycheck has to come from a business registered in The Bahamas, and the job has to be offered to Bahamians first. That makes senior and specialized roles the realistic ones: executives, doctors, engineers, pilots, nurses, chefs and dive instructors all appear on the official fee scale.

Better routes for other movers

  • Remote workers and retirees: your money comes from outside, so look at the Annual Residence Permit ($3,000 a year) instead.
  • Investors: economic permanent residence starts at a $1.0 million investment.
  • Short contracts: 90 days or less uses a short-term work permit.

Step by step

Hiring test first, permit second, and you wait abroad

1. Your employer advertises the job

The vacancy runs at least 3 days in a Bahamian daily newspaper, then your employer applies to the Department of Labour for a Labour Certificate (B$50, about $50). Feedback usually comes within 4 weeks. Scale 1 roles skip this step.

2. You gather documents

A medical certificate dated within 30 days, a police certificate covering five years, two 2 x 2 inch photos and two employer references. U.S. documents need an apostille.

3. Your employer files, you stay away

Filing costs $200, in person or online. Immigration's window is 8 to 12 weeks, and first-time applicants are expected to stay outside The Bahamas until the permit is issued. Expedited processing adds 10% of the permit fee (Scales 1 to 6) or $400 for a 14-business-day decision (Scales 7 to 9).

What changed in 2026

In August 2026, the government said renewals now need a fresh Labour Certificate and are no longer granted automatically, so expect your employer to re-prove the role each time. The 2026/27 budget also raised the Scale 1 fee from $15,500 to $16,275.

Living on the permit

Family, taxes and the slow road to staying

Your family

The permit covers only you. A spouse or child applies for a dependent residence permit at $300 a year, and a spouse who wants to work needs their own employer-sponsored permit.

Taxes

The Bahamas has no personal income tax. You'll pay National Insurance (4.65% of pay, on earnings up to $830 a week) and 10% VAT on most spending. The U.S. still expects a return: the 2026 foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900, and an FBAR is due once your foreign accounts top $10,000.

Staying for good

Permanent residence opens after more than 20 consecutive years on work permits, or 10 to 20 years for Scale 5 to 8 holders. Switch jobs and your new employer files a fresh permit.

Bahamas work permit questions

Is a Bahamas work permit renewal automatic?

No. Since August 2026, renewals need a fresh Labour Certificate and are no longer granted automatically. A renewal also needs a new medical certificate, a police certificate, a letter from the National Insurance Board showing your contributions are up to date, and the $200 processing fee.

Can a Bahamas work permit lead to permanent residence?

Yes, but slowly. People who have held work permit status for more than 20 consecutive years can apply, as can people who lived in The Bahamas 10 to 20 years on a Scale 5 to 8 permit. Nurses and government teachers qualify after 10 years of employment, and doctors after 20.

How long does it take to get a Bahamas work permit?

Plan on roughly three to four months. The Department of Labour usually responds to a Labour Certificate request within 4 weeks, and Immigration's own window for the permit is 8 to 12 weeks after a complete application. Paying for expedited processing (10% of the permit fee for Scales 1 to 6, or $400 for Scales 7 to 9) speeds up the Immigration stage.

Can I apply for a Bahamas work permit myself?

No. A Bahamian employer has to sponsor you and file the application. A sponsoring company must be registered in The Bahamas and in good legal standing; an individual sponsor must be a Bahamian citizen or permanent resident. Most employers must also get a Labour Certificate from the Department of Labour first, showing the job was advertised to Bahamians.

How much does a Bahamas work permit cost in 2026?

The annual fee depends on your job's fee scale: $16,275 plus a 5% levy for Scale 1 executives, $13,125 for Scale 2 professionals, $9,450 for Scale 3, $7,500 for Scale 4, $6,000 for Scale 5, $5,000 for Scale 6, $4,000 for Scale 7, $2,000 for Scale 8 and $500 for Scale 9 farm laborers. Every application also carries a $200 non-refundable processing fee. Fees are set in Bahamian dollars, which are pegged one to one to the U.S. dollar.

Can I be in The Bahamas while my work permit is processed?

First-time applicants are expected to stay outside The Bahamas until the permit is approved and issued. Americans can visit as tourists for up to 90 days without a visa, but working without a permit is an offense: the Immigration Act sets a penalty of a $3,000 fine, up to two years in prison, or both.

Can my spouse work in The Bahamas if I have a work permit?

Not on your permit, which covers only you. A spouse or child can apply for a dependent residence permit, which costs $300 a year. A spouse who wants a job would ordinarily need their own work permit sponsored by a Bahamian employer.

Do I pay income tax in The Bahamas on a work permit?

No. The Bahamas has no personal income tax, though employees pay National Insurance at 4.65% of earnings up to the weekly ceiling of $830, and the standard VAT rate is 10%. As a U.S. citizen you still file a U.S. return; for 2026 the foreign earned income exclusion can shelter up to $132,900 of wages.
