Australia's main work visa starts with an employer, not with you
Australia's Skills in Demand visa runs on one thing: an employer who wants you. Get that and you get up to four years, work rights for your family, and a two year road to permanent residency.
The Skills in Demand visa, subclass 482, is how Australian businesses hire from overseas when they cannot fill a job at home. What that means for you: there's no version of this you can lodge on your own. A business has to want you first, then it does most of the paperwork.

About that data card
Two numbers above are behind, and we'd rather say so than let you budget around them. The government charge for the main applicant went to 4,015 Australian dollars in July 2026, so it's currently about $2,870, not $1,450. And 30 days is nobody's real experience: Home Affairs' own figures, stamped September 4 2026, put the Core Skills stream at four months for half of applicants and nine months for 90 percent. Only Specialist Skills applicants move in days.

Core Skills
Most people land here. Your job has to be one of the 456 occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List; your pay has to be at least about $56,800 a year (Australia sets that floor at 79,423 Australian dollars) or the market rate for the role, whichever is higher. Nurses, electricians, engineers, teachers, chefs, accountants.
Specialist Skills
No occupation list at all. If the job pays at least about $104,800 (146,576 Australian dollars), your title stops mattering. Trades, drivers, machinery operators and laborers are shut out of this one. The payoff is speed: half of these visas were decided in 15 days.
Labour agreements
For employers who negotiated a deal directly with the government, mostly in aged care, dairy and hospitality. A fourth stream for lower paid essential jobs has been promised since 2024 and still isn't running, so ignore any guide that treats this option as live.

How it works
Three applications, and your employer files two of them
Your employer goes first
The business gets approved as a standard business sponsor. Then it nominates your specific job, shows it advertised the role in Australia, and pays a 330 dollar nomination fee (about $235) plus a training levy. Only then do you lodge.
Then it is your turn
One year of full-time work in your occupation in the last five years. Health checks, police certificates from every country you've lived in for 12 months or more over the last decade, and proof of health insurance. Your U.S. passport gets you out of the English test, and most professional roles need no skills assessment.
Who pays for what
You pay about $2,870 for yourself, the same for a partner, and about $720 per child under 18. Your employer pays the sponsorship, nomination and the Skilling Australians Fund levy, which runs about $860 a year for a small business and $1,290 for a large one. It's against the law for a sponsor to bill you for those.
The health cover line nobody reads
Australia has no reciprocal health care agreement with the United States, so a 482 doesn't get you Medicare. Condition 8501 sits on your visa instead: everyone travelling on it has to hold adequate private cover the whole time you are in the country; a lapse is grounds for cancellation. Here's the catch
You can't want your way into this one
Every part of this visa starts with an Australian employer deciding you are worth the trouble, and plenty of them will not read a resume with a foreign address on it. Sponsorship costs them money and adds months to a hire.
Then there's the queue. Ministerial Direction 119 took effect on July 25 2026 and pulled the 482 into the priority system for the first time. It sorts applications into five tiers. The bottom one is everything else, offshore. That's you, applying from the States, unless you're already in Australia in healthcare, teaching or construction.
The good news: you're far less stuck than 482 holders used to be. If your job ends, condition 8607 gives you 180 days in a row to line up a new sponsor, up from 60, and you can work anywhere while you look, up to 365 days across the visa. Just know the gap buys time, not progress: only sponsored work in your nominated job counts toward permanent residency.

The point of the whole thing
Two years in, permanent residency opens up
This is the real reason to take a 482. Work full-time for your sponsor in your nominated job for two years and get nominated for the subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme through its Temporary Residence Transition stream. That one is permanent residency outright: Medicare, any employer you like, and citizenship on the table after four years in the country.
The transition stream drops the two things that stop most people: no skills assessment, and no occupation list at all. Under the current portability rules the two years count across approved sponsors as long as you stay in the same occupation, so one job change does not send you back to zero.
Two things to watch: you need to be under 45 when you apply for the 186, bar a short list of exemptions, and months spent between sponsors do not count.
482 visa questions Americans actually ask
Do Americans need an English test for the 482?
No. Holding a US passport is itself an exemption, and so is five years of full time study taught in English. Everyone else needs IELTS 5.0 in every band, or the equivalent in PTE, TOEFL, OET, CELPIP or MET, under the rules that took effect on 13 September 2025.
Can I apply for the 482 visa without a job offer?
No. The 482 is employer sponsored end to end. An Australian business has to be an approved sponsor, nominate your role, and show it tried to hire locally before you can lodge. Without an offer, the points tested 189 and 190 visas are the routes you can start on your own.
Does the 482 lead to permanent residency?
It does, and that is the main reason to take one. Two years of full time work for a sponsor in your nominated occupation qualifies you for the subclass 186 through its Temporary Residence Transition stream, with no skills assessment and no occupation list. You have to be under 45 when you apply.
How much does the 482 visa cost in 2026?
About $2,870 for the main applicant and for each dependent aged 18 or over, plus about $720 per child under 18. Australia charges those in its own money, at 4,015 and 1,005 Australian dollars, and we converted at about 71 US cents to the Australian dollar on 14 September 2026. Run the rate again on the day you pay, and expect the fees to move every 1 July.
How long does a 482 visa take?
Half of Core Skills applications were decided within four months and ninety percent within nine, on figures Home Affairs stamped in early September 2026. Specialist Skills is far faster: 15 days for half, 45 for ninety percent. Add the employer stages first, roughly 24 days for sponsorship and 57 for the nomination.
Can I change employers on a 482 visa?
Yes, and it got much easier. Your new employer lodges a fresh nomination, and if the occupation is the same you don't need a new visa, just the approved nomination before you start. If your job ends you get 180 days in a row, capped at 365 across the visa, and you can work anywhere meanwhile.
Do I get Medicare on a 482 visa?
No. The United States is not one of the eleven countries with a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, so 482 holders from the States pay their own way. Condition 8501 requires adequate private cover for the family the whole time you are in Australia. Medicare arrives with permanent residency.
