Australia's Subclass 186 Visa: A Job Offer That Comes With Permanent Residency

One Australian employer willing to nominate you, and you land as a permanent resident. Here's who qualifies in 2026, what it really costs, and how long the wait actually runs.

Most Australian work visas hand you a temporary stay and a promise. The subclass 186 hands you permanent residency the day it's granted, with Medicare, the right to walk into a different job, and a citizenship clock that starts ticking. The catch sits at the front door. You need an Australian employer who is an approved sponsor and who wants to put their name and their money behind a full-time job with your name on it.

About that data card

You will see a 90 day figure for this visa in a lot of places, including the data card above. The Department's own numbers say otherwise. In the set published on 4 September 2026, half of Direct Entry applications were decided within 13 months and 9 in 10 within 21 months. The transition stream ran 14 and 22 months. Your employer's nomination is assessed on a separate clock, usually two to four months. The cost on that card is behind too, because the charge went up on 1 July 2026, and the current figures are below. Budget a year and be pleasantly surprised.

The Temporary Residence Transition stream is the main road. Work full-time for your sponsoring employer in the nominated job for two of the last three years and you can go permanent with no skills assessment and no occupation list to satisfy. Since a November 2025 clarification, only time worked while your employer was an approved sponsor counts.

Applying from the States

Direct Entry skips the temporary step. Your occupation has to sit on the Core Skills Occupation List, which grew to 456 occupations in December 2024 and covers far more trades, health and care roles than the old lists did. You also need a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation and three years of relevant experience.

Your employer holds a labour agreement

Rare, industry specific, negotiated one business at a time. If your employer has one, the rules bend to the agreement and decisions come faster.

  • Under 45 when you lodge, with exemptions for senior academics, government scientists, some regional doctors and high earners
  • A valid US passport proves competent English, so no IELTS or PTE for the main applicant
  • Health checks, plus police certificates from every country you lived in for 12 months or more in the past 10 years
  • No points test, no investment, no regional living condition

Approved sponsor status

A business cannot nominate anyone until Home Affairs approves it as a standard business sponsor, and the nomination has to show the job is genuine, full-time and ongoing. Nomination approval runs two to four months for a standard sponsor and days for an accredited one.

Real money, not a threshold

The Core Skills Income Threshold for nominations lodged in 2026-27 works out to about $56,800 a year (Australia sets it at 79,423 Australian dollars), and the employer has to pay the higher of that and the annual market salary rate for the role. Only guaranteed base earnings count. Superannuation and a company car do not.

The training levy

On a permanent 186 nomination the Skilling Australians Fund levy is a one-off $2,150 (3,000 Australian dollars) if the business turns over less than about $7 million a year, and $3,600 (5,000 Australian dollars) if it turns over more. It is the employer's cost by law. Any employer who asks you to cover it, or shaves it off your salary, is breaking their sponsorship obligations.

Americans clear one hurdle for free

A valid US passport counts as evidence of competent English, so the main applicant skips the language test that most 186 applicants have to sit. It does not stretch to your family. Adult dependents over 18 need functional English or the second visa instalment of about $3,500 (4,890 Australian dollars), and that is a nasty surprise to meet late in a family application.

Honest odds

Here's the catch

Here's the catch

Nobody sponsors a stranger

Australian employers sponsor people they have already interviewed, often people they already employ. Of the 185,000 permanent places for 2026-27, 129,590 are set aside for applicants already in Australia, and since 25 July 2026 the processing rules put onshore applicants ahead of offshore ones, with onshore healthcare, teaching and construction workers first in line. Applying cold from the States is legal. It's just slow and rare.

The 482 detour is the normal route

The usual path is a Skills in Demand 482 visa first, two years with that employer, then the transition stream. It costs more in total and takes longer on paper, but sponsors say yes to it far more often than they say yes to a straight permanent nomination.

Turning 45 closes most of it

The age cut-off is real, and the exemptions are narrow: senior academics, government scientists, some regional doctors, and people who have been earning above the Fair Work high income threshold, about $135,900 for 2026-27 (190,100 Australian dollars), in the sponsored job.

What you get the day it's granted

Medicare

Permanent residents enrol in the public health system. Americans on temporary work visas cannot, because there is no reciprocal agreement.

Any job you like

No condition ties you to the sponsor after grant. You can resign, switch industries or go freelance.

Your family too

Your partner and dependent children get the same permanent status in the same application.

Five years of travel

Come and go for five years, then renew the travel facility with a Resident Return visa.

A citizenship clock

Four years of lawful residence with the final 12 months as a permanent resident, and Australia allows dual citizenship.

No regional strings

Unlike the provisional regional visas, nothing dictates which postcode you live in.

Subclass 186 questions Americans ask

Do I need an IELTS score for the 186 visa?

Not if you hold a valid US passport. It is accepted as evidence of competent English for the main applicant, and the 186 has no degree-taught-in-English exemption for anyone else. Adult family members aged 18 and over still need functional English or you pay a second visa instalment of about $3,500 (4,890 Australian dollars).

Is the 482 visa a faster way to permanent residency?

It is usually the more likely way. Employers hire onto a Skills in Demand 482 first, and after two years in the nominated job you move to the 186 transition stream with no skills assessment and no occupation list. It is two applications instead of one, and Australia has set aside 58,040 employer-sponsored permanent places in 2026-27 for exactly that handover.

Can I apply for the 186 visa from the United States?

Yes, through the Direct Entry stream, as long as an approved Australian sponsor nominates you, your occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List and you have a positive skills assessment plus three years of experience. Be realistic about the odds. Most nominations go to people already working in Australia, and the processing rules now favour onshore applicants.

How long does the subclass 186 visa take in 2026?

Longer than most guides say. In the Home Affairs figures published in early September 2026, half of Direct Entry applications were decided within 13 months and 9 in 10 within 21 months, with the transition stream at 14 and 22 months. The labour agreement stream is much faster. Add two to four months for your employer's nomination if it is lodged separately.

What does the 186 visa cost?

The visa charge from 1 July 2026 is about $4,400 for the main applicant, $2,200 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and $1,100 per child. Your employer pays the nomination charge and a one-off training levy of $2,150 or $3,600. Australia sets these in Australian dollars (6,140 for the main applicant), and we converted at about 71 US cents in mid-September 2026, so run the rate again on the day you pay. Then add skills assessment fees, medicals and police checks.

Can I get a 186 visa if I am over 45?

Only through a narrow set of exemptions. Senior academics nominated by an Australian university, scientists and researchers nominated by a government science agency, some medical practitioners in regional areas, and people whose sponsored earnings have been above the Fair Work high income threshold, about $135,900 for 2026-27 (190,100 Australian dollars). Get an agent to check your income history before you lodge.

Can I change jobs after the 186 is granted?

Yes. The 186 is a permanent visa with no employment condition attached, so once it's granted you can change employers, change occupations or work for yourself. What has to hold up is the nomination itself: the job had to be genuine and ongoing when it was assessed. Walking out the day your visa arrives is legal, but it burns a bridge you may want later.
