Andorra's digital nomad permit: Pyrenees living on a paycheck earned elsewhere
Two government sign-offs, a fee of about $256, and at least 90 days a year in the country. Here's who qualifies, what it costs, and what the rules leave unclear.
Unlike Andorra's investor route, this permit asks for no €1 million investment. What it wants is proof your work runs on the internet for someone outside the country.

Who it's for
Built for income that comes from outside Andorra
The permit covers two groups: employees hired by a company based in another country, and freelancers whose clients don't live in Andorra. The work itself has to run on technology, not a fixed desk.
It's the wrong fit if you want Andorran clients or a local job, since any paid work inside the country needs its own permit. It's also not for retirees living on savings (the passive permit now takes about $1.14 million, or €1 million, invested) or anyone chasing a second passport.

How to apply
Two sign-offs, in this order
1. The economy ministry
First, the economy ministry has to agree your work doesn't need a fixed location. It's filed online only, costs nothing, and is decided in 15 business days.
2. Immigration
With that approval, you apply for residence. The fee is about $256 (€224.61), and Immigration has up to two months to decide. You'll need the items below.
3. Your parish
Within three months of approval, register with the comú (parish council) where you live.
- Passport and a recent 35 x 45 mm color photo
- Criminal record certificates from every country you've lived in (for Americans, an FBI check with a State Department apostille)
- A lease or deed for a home in Andorra
- Sickness and disability insurance valid in Andorra for you and any dependents
- Proof of sufficient economic means
- A signed commitment to live in Andorra at least 90 days a year
Here's the catch: the income test has no printed number
The government's page asks for "sufficient economic means" and leaves the amount to regulation. Advisors generally read it as three times Andorra's minimum wage, which has been €1,568.67 (about $1,785) a month since July 2026. That works out to about $5,355 a month (€4,706). Confirm the current figure with an Andorran adviser before you sign a lease.

Life on the permit
Taxes, Catalan and the long way in
Taxes on both sides
As an Andorran tax resident, your first €24,000 (about $27,300) isn't taxed, income up to €40,000 (about $45,500) pays an effective 5%, and the rest pays 10%. Nomads don't pay into CASS, the social security system. The U.S. still taxes you as a citizen, and the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers up to $132,900 of 2026 earnings if you qualify.
Catalan
From 2029, renewing this permit will take Catalan: level A1 at the first renewal and A2 at the second.
Getting there
Americans can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Andorra has no international airport, so you'll fly into Barcelona or Toulouse and finish by road. Budget for housing, too: two-bedroom rentals average above €1,800 (about $2,050) a month.

Andorra digital nomad permit: your questions
Can I work for Andorran companies or clients as a digital nomad?
No. The permit covers employees of companies based in other countries and freelancers whose clients aren't resident in Andorra. Any other paid work inside Andorra needs a separate immigration authorization.
Can a digital nomad become an Andorran citizen?
Only after 20 years of residence, the last five without a break, plus a B1 Catalan diploma. Andorra also requires you to give up your original nationality, so an American would lose U.S. citizenship.
How much does Andorra's digital nomad permit cost, and how long does it take?
The economy ministry's approval is free and takes 15 business days. The residence application costs €224.61 (about $256), and Immigration has up to two months to decide. Budget separately for health insurance, a lease and U.S. background checks.
Does Andorra have a digital nomad visa?
Yes. Andorra's residence permit for digital nomads, created by Law 42/2022, lets people who work remotely for employers or clients outside Andorra live there. The first permit lasts two years, with renewals of two, three and then ten years.
Do digital nomads pay the €50,000 AFA deposit in Andorra?
No. Andorran advisory firms say digital nomads skip the €50,000 payment to the Andorran Financial Authority that passive and self-employed residents make. Since February 2026, those residents don't get that money back.
How many days a year do digital nomads have to spend in Andorra?
At least 90 days per calendar year, and you sign a commitment to that when you apply. You also have to register with the comú (parish council) where you live within three months of approval.
How much income do I need for Andorra's digital nomad permit?
The government asks for sufficient economic means but doesn't print an amount on its application page. Advisors generally read it as three times Andorra's minimum wage, which has been €1,568.67 (about $1,785) a month since July 2026. Confirm the current figure with an Andorran adviser.
Will I pay income tax in Andorra as a digital nomad?
If you become an Andorran tax resident, income up to €24,000 (about $27,300) isn't taxed, income between that and €40,000 (about $45,500) pays an effective 5%, and income above that pays 10%. As a U.S. citizen, you still file with the IRS every year.
Other ways to live in Andorra
Andorra's Active Residency Permit: a local job or your own company, and a quota to beat
Founders now pay about $57,300 (€50,000) that they won't get back, and Americans sit last in line for the 2026 self-employed quota. Here's how both routes work and what they cost.
Andorra passive residency: €1 million invested, 90 days a year, and a €50,000 payment you won't get back
Since February 2026, living on your investments in the Pyrenees takes about $1.14 million in Andorran assets and yearly income above three times the local minimum wage.
