Budget about $3,100 a month for one person in Edinburgh, and expect most single people to land somewhere between $2,700 and $3,500. A couple spends about $4,400 and a family of four about $6,400. Rent is the biggest line: a one-bedroom near the center averages about $1,650 a month, or about $1,350 farther out. All figures are in U.S. dollars, as of 2026.

Edinburgh suits Americans who want a capital they can mostly walk, with stone tenements, a castle on a volcanic crag and hills with views inside the city limits. Glasgow is about 50 minutes away by train, and the tram runs from the airport through the center to Leith. It works well for remote workers and for anyone on a UK work or study visa who wants a smaller city with a big cultural calendar.

It's a harder sell if you need sun. Average January highs sit near 43F, winter daylight is gone by mid-afternoon, and every August the festivals fill the Old Town with crowds.

Getting around

Transport in Edinburgh

Most people here get around on foot and by bus. The center is compact enough that you can reach most of it walking, though the Old Town's cobbles and the hills slow you down. Lothian Buses runs the main network around the clock. You can tap a contactless card when you board, and you'll never pay more than the cheapest adult day fare for the trips you take. The Bus and Tram app sells day tickets too. Our monthly budget sets aside about $110 for getting around.

The tram is one line, from Edinburgh Airport through the city center to Leith and Newhaven, with a tram every 7 minutes. It meets the trains at Edinburgh Gateway, Edinburgh Park and Haymarket, and Waverley, the main station, is a short walk from the St Andrew Square stop. One habit to learn early: tap off when you leave the tram, or you're charged the full airport fare.

Do you need a car? Not if you live in or near the center. If you do buy one, check it against the Low Emission Zone first. Since June 2024, vehicles that don't meet its emissions standards get a penalty charge for driving into the zone in the city center. Blue Badge holders are exempt.

Living here

Settling in: healthcare, people and access

Who you'll meet: There's no language barrier, so most Americans slip into ordinary city life instead of an expat bubble. You won't be the only one, either. In Scotland's 2022 census, 1.3% of Edinburgh residents were born in the U.S.

Healthcare: If your visa requires it, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge with your application, and you can use the NHS free of charge from the day your visa starts. Then you'll register with a GP, the family doctor who refers you on to specialists. You fill out a form and bring proof of identity and of your new address. You need to be staying more than three months. Two extras in Scotland matter day to day: prescriptions are free, and so are eye exams.

Remote work: Home internet runs about $35 a month. The bigger adjustment is the clock. Edinburgh is five hours ahead of New York for most of the year, so East Coast meetings land in your afternoon and evening.

LGBTQ expats: About 32,000 Edinburgh residents told the 2022 census they're gay, lesbian, bisexual or another non-heterosexual orientation. The city has deep roots here: Scotland's first Pride Scotia march gathered on Barony Street in Edinburgh.

Black Americans: In the 2022 census, 1.8% of residents identified as African and 0.3% as Caribbean or Black. Expect to be a visible minority, and talk to Black expats already living in Scotland before you choose a neighborhood.

Limited mobility: Transit is the easier part. Every tram and tram stop is built for wheelchair access, every bus has at least one wheelchair space, and the entire fleets of the city's two main black cab firms are wheelchair accessible. The streets are harder. The Old Town is cobbled and uneven, the city is hilly, and many older buildings have no step-free entrance, so ask about steps and elevators before you sign a lease.

Retirement: Free prescriptions and a walkable center make Edinburgh appealing for retirees. The catch is the visa: the UK's retired person of independent means category is closed to new applicants and hasn't been replaced, so there's no route built for retirees.
