Bristol: street art, steep hills and a working harbor
A university city of about 472,000 in South West England, with ferries across the harbor and trains to London every half hour.

A single person living in Bristol spends about $3,200 a month, and most budgets land between $2,600 and $3,800 depending on the neighborhood and how often you eat out. Couples spend about $4,600 and a family of four about $6,700. Rent is the biggest line: a one-bedroom near the center averages $1,900 a month, or about $1,500 farther out. All figures are in U.S. dollars, as of 2026.
Bristol suits remote workers, academics and creative types who want a lively, mid-size English city rather than a capital. It has two universities, colorful street art all over the city, a working harbor at its heart, and green escapes close by: the Mendip Hills are about 20 minutes from the center.
It's a harder sell if you're counting every dollar or want easy, flat streets. Rents have jumped in recent years, much of the city is built on steep hills, and winters are short on daylight and long on drizzle.

Getting around
Transport in Bristol
Most people here get around by bus, on foot or by bike, and the monthly budget above sets aside about $70 for transit. First Bus runs the vast majority of routes. You can tap a contactless card or buy tickets in the First Bus app, which also shows where your bus is in real time, and tap-on fares are capped each day at the price of a day ticket. MetroBus adds four faster, limited-stop routes that link the center with Park & Ride lots and the north edge of the city, including UWE's Frenchay campus and Cribbs Causeway.
The buses are the weak spot. Traffic slows them, so build in extra time, and for short trips in and around the center, walking is often quicker. Bikes are popular, but the hills are serious, so an e-bike or plenty of gears helps. There's also a ferry: Bristol Ferry Boats runs seven days a week across the harbor, with stops including Temple Meads and Hotwells, a pleasant shortcut when it fits your route.
Temple Meads is the main rail station, with trains to London Paddington every 30 minutes that take around an hour and a half. Bristol Parkway, on the north side, also has London trains. For flights, the A1 Airport Flyer bus runs from Bristol Bus Station through the center and Temple Meads to Bristol Airport, up to every 8 minutes.
Do you need a car? Not if you live in the inner neighborhoods. If you buy one, check it against the Clean Air Zone around the center first: gas cars from before roughly 2006 and diesels from before roughly late 2015 pay a daily charge to drive into it.

Living here
Settling in: community, health and practical notes
The expat scene: With no language to learn, Americans tend to fold into ordinary Bristol life rather than an expat bubble, and the University of Bristol and UWE keep the city young and international. Clifton, up by the Suspension Bridge, is the polished, pricier end of town. Stokes Croft, Montpelier and St Pauls have lower rents and plenty of bars and street art, while Bedminster and Southville, south of the river, are lively and a little more settled.
Healthcare: If your visa requires it, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge with your application, and you can use the NHS free of charge from the day your visa starts. Prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests still cost extra. Register with a GP, the family doctor who refers you to specialists, as soon as you have an address; you can do it online, and the NHS says you don't need ID, proof of address or proof of immigration status. For serious emergencies, Southmead Hospital, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, is one of two Major Trauma Centres in South West England.
Remote work: Home internet runs about $35 a month. Bristol is five hours ahead of New York for most of the year, so East Coast calls fall in your afternoon and evening.
LGBTQ expats: Bristol Pride was revived in 2010 and now runs a fortnight of events each summer. In 2024, about 25,000 people joined the march and 40,000 turned out for the festival on the Downs.
Black Americans: In the 2021 Census, 18.9% of Bristol residents belonged to a Black, Asian or minority ethnic group, close to the national figure of 18.3%. Black African residents made up 3.8%, and Somali is the city's largest single minority group. Many of Bristol's African-Caribbean residents live in St Pauls, home of the St Pauls Carnival every July, with events organized year-round from the Kuumba Centre.
Limited mobility: By law, every bus has space for at least one wheelchair, and many stops have raised curbs that the bus can lower to meet. The hills are the harder part: street-level getting around varies a lot by neighborhood, so walk or roll your daily routes before signing a lease. Rail stations differ too; check step-free access for the ones you'd use, and look into the Disabled Persons Railcard for discounted fares.
Retirement: Bristol has a major hospital network, no language barrier and fast trains to London, so it appeals to retirees. The hard part is the visa. The UK's retired person of independent means category is closed to new applicants and hasn't been replaced, so there's no route built for retirees. See our guide to retirement visas and the full guide to moving to the United Kingdom for the options that do exist.

Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car in Bristol?
Not if you live in the inner neighborhoods. Buses, walking, cycling and the harbor ferry cover daily life, and trains to London leave Temple Meads every 30 minutes. If you do buy a car, check it against Bristol's Clean Air Zone, which charges older, more polluting vehicles a daily fee to drive into the center.
What is the weather like in Bristol?
Mild and damp. Average July highs are near 69F, and average January highs are near 46F with lows near 37F. Bristol gets about 31 inches of rain a year, spread fairly evenly across the months, and winter days are short and often gray.
Is Bristol a good city for remote workers?
Yes, for many people. Home internet costs about $35 a month, the city has a large university and creative crowd, and London is an easy train ride away. The time difference is the main adjustment: Bristol is five hours ahead of New York for most of the year.
How do Americans get healthcare in Bristol?
Most Americans on a UK visa pay the Immigration Health Surcharge with their application and can then use the NHS free of charge from the day their visa starts. Prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests still cost extra. After arriving, register with a local GP, which is free and can be done online.
Is Bristol a safe place to live?
Bristol scores 62 out of 100 on our safety index and 38 on our crime index, where a higher safety score means safer. Like most cities its size, it has quieter and rougher patches, so walk a neighborhood at night and ask locals about specific streets before you sign a lease.
How far is Bristol from London?
By train, about an hour and a half. Great Western Railway runs trains from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington every 30 minutes, and there are hourly trains from Bristol Parkway too, which makes day trips and occasional office days in London realistic.
Can Americans retire in Bristol?
Not on a retirement visa. The UK's retired person of independent means category is closed to new applicants and hasn't been replaced, so Americans who want to retire in Bristol need to qualify through a different visa route. Compare the alternatives before you plan a move around Bristol.
How much does it cost to live in Bristol, England?
