Crete from a Heraklion base: about $1,800 a month for one person

What a year on Crete costs, how safe it is, where the hospitals and ferries are, and whether retiring on the island fits you.

Budget about $1,800 a month for one person living on Crete, with most single budgets landing between $1,500 and $2,200 (2026 figures, in U.S. dollars). A couple should plan on about $2,600, and a family of four about $3,800. A one-bedroom in central Heraklion rents for around $750 a month, usually between $600 and $900, and about $550 farther out.

This page covers the whole island, with Heraklion as the anchor. It's where you'll find the university hospital, the main airport and the overnight ferries to Athens. Most foreign residents live farther west around Chania or east around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, and use Heraklion for the hospital and flights.

Crete suits people who want a working Greek city within reach, a long beach season and mountains for weekends. It's a harder fit if you want a big English-speaking circle on your doorstep, a lively winter, or a life without a car.

Getting around

Transport in Heraklion

Inside Heraklion, the blue city buses run from early morning until late evening. The center is compact enough to walk, and the city has rebuilt the route from the main bus station into it with wider sidewalks and safer crossings.

For the rest of the island, KTEL intercity coaches link Heraklion with every county on Crete, including express runs west to Chania. Here's the catch: the buses stick to the main roads and towns, and they don't go everywhere. If you want a hill village or a house between the coastal towns, plan on a car.

Heraklion's port is about 1.2 miles (2 km) from the center, and the airport about 2.5 miles (4 km). Ferries to Piraeus, the port of Athens, run all year with Minoan Lines and ANEK. The evening boats leave Piraeus around 9 p.m. and dock in Heraklion around 6 or 7 the next morning, so a cabin stands in for a hotel night.

A new airport at Kastelli is targeted for November 2028, though the government says that depends on construction and road work staying on track.

Day to day

Who lives here, and the practical side

The foreign community

Crete draws people from Northern Europe, the UK, Germany and France, and a growing number from North America. The settled expat pockets are around Chania, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda more than in Heraklion, which runs as a Greek city first. Facebook groups and organized social events are the usual way in. English is easy in tourist areas and much harder in government offices, hospitals and villages, so start Greek lessons early. In winter many restaurants close and the foreign crowd thins out.

Healthcare

The University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI), at Voutes about 4 miles south of the center, is the island's main referral hospital. Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos each have a general hospital. Private clinics such as Creta InterClinic in Heraklion have English-speaking doctors and are where many expats go first. Summer is the squeeze: the population roughly doubles, and non-urgent ER cases at PAGNI can wait two to four hours. Dial 166 for an ambulance or 112 for any emergency.

Working remotely

Home internet runs about $30 a month. Heraklion has coworking spaces including Office12, Comeet Creative Space and pom, and Chania has Workhub. Crete is seven hours ahead of New York for most of the year, so a 2 p.m. Eastern call lands at 9 p.m. If you work for a U.S. company, start with the Greece digital nomad visa.

LGBTQ residents

Greece legalized same-sex marriage in February 2024, adoption included, though non-biological parents still don't get full equality and assisted reproduction isn't open to same-sex couples. Heraklion has held its own grassroots Pride since 2015. Locals interviewed in 2023 said things have improved, but harassment still happens and visibility carries some risk.

Black Americans

We couldn't find a network for Black Americans on Crete, and the foreign community is mostly European. A scouting stay of a month or more, ideally in the off-season, is the best test. Ask in the island's expat groups how other newcomers of color have found daily life.

Limited mobility

Heraklion has started fixing its center. Projects finished in 2019 and 2023 widened sidewalks, added tactile paving, anti-slip surfaces and disabled parking, and cleared obstacles along the route from the main bus station into the center. Beyond that route, the city's own planners describe broken-up walkways, unsafe crossings and cars parked where they shouldn't be. Look for housing near the improved streets, and check every apartment for entrance steps and an elevator before you sign.

Retiring on Crete

Crete works for retirees who want a single budget near $1,800 a month, a university hospital in reach, and an island big enough to stay busy all year. Rent through a December or January before you buy: they're the wettest months, and the quietest. Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to move to Crete from the U.S.?

Americans need a Greek long-stay visa to live on Crete. Retirees and people with passive income usually apply for the retirement visa, remote workers for the digital nomad visa, and investors for the Golden Visa. You'll also want private health insurance and a lease or address on the island.

Is Heraklion safe for Americans?

Yes. Heraklion scores 76 out of 100 on the safety index Expatsi tracks, and 24 on the crime index, where lower is safer. As anywhere, the risk rises in crowded tourist spots in summer, so watch your bag.

What is healthcare like in Heraklion?

The University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) is Crete's main referral hospital, and private clinics such as Creta InterClinic have English-speaking doctors. Public ER waits can stretch to two to four hours for non-urgent cases in summer, when the island's population roughly doubles.

How do you get from Crete to Athens?

Fly from Heraklion, or take the ferry to Piraeus, which runs all year with Minoan Lines and ANEK. Evening ferries take about eight hours or more, so most people book a cabin and sleep through the crossing.

Is Crete a good place to retire?

For many retirees, yes. A single budget runs about $1,800 a month, Heraklion has a university hospital, and the island has an expat community around Chania, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Greece's retirement visa is the usual route for Americans living on pensions or savings.

What is the cost of living in Heraklion, Crete?

One person on Crete spends about $1,800 a month in U.S. dollars, and a couple about $2,600 (2026 estimates). A one-bedroom apartment in central Heraklion rents for around $750 a month.

Where do expats live on Crete?

The settled expat communities are around Chania, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, with smaller pockets in the east. Heraklion is more Greek day to day, but it has the island's main hospital and airport.

Do you need a car to live on Crete?

Not in central Heraklion or Chania, where city buses and KTEL coaches between towns cover daily life. You will want one for a hill village or a house between the coastal towns, because buses stick to the main roads.
