The UAE Work Visa: Your Employer Files, You Show Up

A two-year residence tied to one job. The company pays the visa costs by law. You bring an authenticated degree, a clean medical and a plan for the day the job ends.

You can't apply for this one yourself. A UAE company gets your work permit, flies you in on an entry permit, and converts it to residence once you pass the medical. Here's what that looks like from your side.

How it works

One job, one sponsor, two years at a time

The visa belongs to the job. Your employer applies, pays and renews it every two years. Lose the job and a countdown starts.

  • Good fit: you have a UAE job offer, or you work in a field Gulf employers recruit for from abroad
  • Not for: remote workers paid by a U.S. company, or anyone counting on citizenship (it's by nomination only)
  • Earning about $4,085 a month (AED 15,000) with a bachelor's degree? Ask about the self-sponsored Green Visa instead

Step by step

From offer letter to Emirates ID in about a month

Practitioners report 2 to 4 weeks once the paperwork's ready. The slow part is usually on the U.S. side, so start there.

  1. Authenticate your degree. It goes through the U.S. State Department, then VFS Global for the UAE Embassy (since August 2025). The school must be regionally accredited.
  2. Your employer gets the work permit. The employer pays about $70 to $940 (AED 250 to 3,450), depending on its MOHRE rating.
  3. Fly in on the entry permit. It's single-entry and good for 60 days, so don't sit on it.
  4. Medical, biometrics, residence. Everyone 18 and up takes the medical, then ICP issues the residence permit.

Taking a UAE job in 2026

As of August 29, 2026, the State Department rates the UAE Level 3: Reconsider Travel, citing terrorism and armed conflict after U.S.-Iran hostilities began February 28, 2026. Iran has said it will target UAE locations tied to the United States. Routine visa processing, new work permits included, was reported suspended in March; a September update says hiring continues with delays. Ask your employer about its security plan, and have your own way out that doesn't depend on the U.S. government.

Family, taxes and the exit rules

Bringing family

You can sponsor a spouse, sons under 25 and unmarried daughters if you earn about $1,090 a month (AED 4,000), or about $820 (AED 3,000) plus housing. A spouse can take a job with their own work permit.

U.S. taxes

The UAE doesn't tax individual income, but the U.S. still does. There's no U.S.-UAE tax treaty and no Social Security agreement, so the foreign earned income exclusion ($132,900 for 2026) does the heavy lifting.

When the job ends

The law gives you a gratuity of 21 days' wage per year for your first five years, 30 days after that. Don't just walk out: the State Department warns employers can file charges if you leave without canceling your visa, and unpaid debts can stop you at the airport.

What Americans ask about UAE work visas

Can my spouse work in the UAE on a family visa?

Yes. The UAE issues a separate work permit that lets companies hire residents who are sponsored by a family member. To sponsor a spouse in the first place, you need a salary of about $1,090 a month (AED 4,000), or about $820 (AED 3,000) plus housing.

How long does a UAE work visa take?

Practitioners report 2 to 4 weeks from signed offer to finished residence when documents are ready. There's no official end-to-end timeline, and the 2026 conflict has added delays, so build in extra time. Getting a U.S. degree authenticated through the State Department and VFS Global often takes longer than the UAE steps.

Does a UAE employer have to give me health insurance?

Since January 2025, private employers in Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain must pay for basic coverage, about $87 a year (AED 320). Dubai and Abu Dhabi aren't part of that federal scheme, so check what your contract covers there.

Do I have to pay for my UAE work visa?

No. UAE labor law bars employers from charging workers recruitment or employment costs, directly or indirectly. The employer pays the MOHRE work permit, about $70 to $940 (AED 250 to 3,450), plus ICP's residence fees. Practitioners put the two-year total at about $820 to $1,905 (AED 3,000 to 7,000), all on the employer's side.

Do Americans owe U.S. tax on a UAE salary?

Yes, you still file and may owe. The UAE doesn't tax individual income, and the U.S. has no income tax treaty or Social Security agreement with the UAE. Most salaried Americans lean on the foreign earned income exclusion, which is $132,900 for tax year 2026.

What happens to my UAE visa if I lose my job?

Once your employer cancels the visa, most workers get 30 days to find a new sponsor or leave; workers in skill levels 1 to 3 get 90 days. After that, the fine is about $14 (AED 50) a day. If your family should stay while you look, ICP charges a guarantee of about $1,360 (AED 5,000) to keep their permits active.

Can I leave the UAE for months at a time on a work visa?

Not for long. A residence visa is canceled automatically after more than 180 continuous days outside the UAE. If you were away for work, study or medical treatment, you can apply for a permit to come back, then must enter within 30 days of approval.

Is it safe to take a job in the UAE right now?

The State Department rated the UAE Level 3: Reconsider Travel on August 29, 2026, because of terrorism and armed conflict, and Iran has threatened UAE locations tied to the United States. Many Americans still work there. Enroll in STEP, ask your employer about its security plan, and have your own way to leave.
