UAE Student Visa: Your University Files It for You
A one-year residence visa that renews each year you stay enrolled. Here's what it costs in 2026, how Americans pay for a UAE degree, and the ways to stay after graduation.
Americans can fly into the UAE without a visa, but a degree program needs a student residence visa. You don't apply alone: your school's visa office runs the process, you pass a medical test, and you walk away with an Emirates ID.
How it works
The school is your sponsor
In Dubai, the university itself is the sponsor and guarantor. It has to be accredited and licensed by the Ministry of Education or the emirate's authority. Most schools sponsor full-time students only.

- A parent living in the UAE can sponsor instead: sons up to 25 (older with proof of a year of study), daughters until they marry
- Medical fitness test and Emirates ID for anyone 18 and over
- No health insurance, no visa: coverage is required to issue or renew it

Federal aid shrinks abroad
At an eligible foreign school you can still borrow federal Direct Loans, but Pell Grants and other federal grants don't follow you. Only schools listed as "Eligible" take new federal borrowing; "Deferment Only" schools just pause loans you already have. Ask your school for its federal school code before you commit.
Grad students: PLUS is closed
Since July 1, 2026, Grad PLUS loans aren't open to new borrowers. New grad students can borrow up to $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized loans ($100,000 lifetime), or $50,000 a year ($200,000 lifetime) in professional programs.
School money matters most
NYU Abu Dhabi awards need-based scholarships through the CSS Profile, which every non-Emirati applicant files (NYU Abu Dhabi aid). At other schools, check the finance office's own page, like AUS tuition and fees.
If you earn money
The U.S. and the UAE have no income tax treaty. The foreign earned income exclusion needs 330 full days abroad in 12 months, and it doesn't reduce self-employment tax.
Rules that catch American students
Unpaid debts, unpaid medical bills and late credit card payments can lead to arrest or an exit ban, so keep every account current. Controlled medications need a special permit before you fly in. And the State Department rated the UAE Level 3, Reconsider travel, in August 2026: read the current advisory before you enroll.
The process
From admission letter to Emirates ID
Your school sets the pace. Birmingham Dubai quotes 14 working days for the entry permit and four to five weeks after arrival for the visa itself. AUD wants your request at least two months before you land.

After graduation
Golden visa for top grads
Ten years of residence for graduates of a top-100 university with a 3.5 GPA, or UAE graduates with a 3.5 or 3.8 depending on the school's class. Apply within two years of graduating.
Job exploration visa
60, 90 or 120 days to job hunt with no sponsor, for graduates of a top-500 university within the past two years.

In Dubai you get 60 days after the student permit ends or is canceled to leave or switch status.

UAE student visa questions
Is health insurance required for a UAE student visa?
Yes. A UAE residence visa can't be issued or renewed without valid health insurance. Schools often sell a student plan: American University in Dubai lists AED 3,200 (about $871) a year.
Can my parents sponsor my UAE student visa?
Yes, if they're residents of the UAE. Parents can sponsor sons up to age 25, and older sons with proof of at least a year of higher-education enrollment. They can sponsor daughters for study at any age until marriage.
How much does a UAE student visa cost?
Dubai's government fee for a student residence permit is AED 200 (about $54), plus small add-on fees. Schools charge more because they bundle insurance and processing: American University in Dubai lists a AED 2,000 (about $545) visa fee plus a refundable AED 3,000 deposit, and Birmingham Dubai's full package was AED 7,068.10 (about $1,925) for 2026.
Can I use federal student loans at a UAE university?
Only if the school is on the U.S. Department of Education's list as eligible for new borrowing. There you can take federal Direct Loans, but never Pell Grants. Grad PLUS loans closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026. Ask the school for its federal school code before you enroll.
Can I work while on a UAE student visa?
Only with a work permit. The UAE labor ministry has a Student Training and Employment Permit that lets an employer hire a student already in the country, valid for three months at a time. Your school's student office can tell you what it allows alongside your studies.
Can I stay in the UAE after graduating?
Yes, several ways. Dubai gives a 60-day grace period after a student permit ends. Graduates of a top-500 university within the past two years can get a job exploration visa of 60, 90 or 120 days with no sponsor. Top graduates can qualify for a 10-year golden visa, for example from a top-100 university with a 3.5 GPA.
Do Americans need a visa to study at a university in the UAE?
Yes. U.S. citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, but a degree program runs on a student residence visa. Your accredited university usually sponsors it, or a parent who lives in the UAE can. It's issued for one year and renewed each year with proof you're still enrolled.
How long can I stay outside the UAE on a residence visa?
A UAE residence visa is canceled automatically if you stay outside the country for more than 180 days in a row. Plan long summers and study-abroad terms around that limit, and check with your school's visa office before you go.
