A UAE residence visa is only as steady as the person who sponsors it

Employer, family member, Dubai property or retirement savings: your sponsor sets how long you stay, who can join you, and what happens when life changes.

The UAE has no personal income tax, and a standard residence permit is quick once the paperwork clears: GDRFA Dubai lists 48 hours to issue a private-sector permit, valid two years and renewable. The work is picking the right sponsor. Only the sponsor can cancel your visa, and your family's visas ride on yours.

Start with your money

Who sponsors you depends on where your income comes from

A residence visa isn't one program. It's a permit someone has to vouch for, and the right sponsor follows your income.

  • **A UAE paycheck:** your employer starts the application. The standard work residence visa runs two years and renews.
  • **A spouse or parent already living there:** they can sponsor you on a salary of AED 4,000 a month (about $1,089), or AED 3,000 plus housing.
  • **A pension or savings, age 55+:** Dubai's five-year retiree permit (below).
  • **Property in Dubai:** a two-year investor visa. Since May 2026, sole owners face no minimum property value; co-owners need AED 400,000 (about $108,900) each.
  • **Freelance income:** the self-sponsored Green Visa.
  • **Large investments:** the 10-year Golden Visa, with no sponsor at all.

Retiring

Retiring on a pension or savings

Dubai's retiree permit is for people 55 and older with at least 15 years of work behind them, and that work can have been in the U.S. It lasts five years and renews on the same terms. You need one of these:

Fees in Dubai: AED 2,280 for residence plus AED 575 for the Emirates ID (about $777 total), as reported in 2026. Outside Dubai, the income floor is reported at AED 180,000 a year (about $49,000).

  • Income of AED 240,000 a year or more (about $65,350)
  • A deposit of AED 1,000,000 or more (about $272,300), movable to a UAE bank within 60 days
  • Property worth AED 1,000,000 or more

Three things to sort out before you land

The residency medical exam happens after you arrive and includes HIV, hepatitis B and tuberculosis tests; the State Department reports Americans detained and deported over positive results. Many prescription and over-the-counter medications are restricted, so check yours with the Ministry of Health first. Unpaid debts matter, too: the State Department reports airport arrests over late credit card payments.

Taxes

No UAE income tax, but the IRS still gets a say

The UAE has no personal income tax. Here's the catch: the U.S. has no income tax treaty or Social Security totalization agreement with the UAE.

  • The foreign earned income exclusion shields up to $132,900 of wages in 2026.
  • Self-employed Americans still owe 15.3% U.S. self-employment tax.
  • Run a business in the UAE with turnover above AED 1 million and 9% UAE corporate tax applies. Wages don't count toward that.

UAE residence visa questions

Is health insurance required for a UAE residence visa?

Yes. The UAE government and ICP both list health insurance as required. In Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain, employers have had to buy basic coverage for workers since January 2025 before issuing or renewing residence.

What salary do I need to sponsor my spouse in the UAE?

A monthly salary of AED 4,000 (about $1,089), or AED 3,000 (about $817) plus employer-provided housing. ICP also lists a financial guarantee of AED 3,000 per family member, capped at AED 15,000.

How long can I stay outside the UAE on a residence visa?

Up to 180 days in a row. Stay out longer and the residence visa is automatically void, though the UAE government says some categories are exempt. The count is continuous, so a short trip back resets it.

Can Americans get a UAE residence visa without a job there?

Yes. Without a UAE employer, you can be sponsored by a spouse or parent who lives there, qualify for Dubai's five-year retiree permit at 55 or older, buy property in Dubai for a two-year investor visa, apply for the self-sponsored Green Visa as a freelancer, or invest for a 10-year Golden Visa.

What happens to my UAE residence visa if I lose my job?

Your employer cancels it, and your family's visas are tied to yours. The UAE government says grace periods reach up to six months depending on category, and GDRFA Dubai lists 60 days for private-sector workers. After that, overstay fines are AED 50 (about $14) a day.

Do I still pay U.S. taxes while living in the UAE?

Yes. U.S. citizens file wherever they live, and there's no U.S.-UAE income tax treaty or totalization agreement. The foreign earned income exclusion covers up to $132,900 of wages for 2026, but self-employed Americans still owe 15.3% self-employment tax.

Can an American retire in Dubai?

Yes, at 55 or older with at least 15 years of work, which can have been in the U.S. You also need one of three things: income of AED 240,000 a year (about $65,350), a deposit of AED 1,000,000 (about $272,300), or property worth AED 1,000,000. The permit lasts five years and renews on the same terms.

How much does a UAE residence visa cost?

It depends on the emirate and the route. GDRFA Dubai lists a AED 200 base fee plus a AED 500 processing fee (about $191 together) for a private-sector permit, with smaller add-on fees. Dubai's retiree permit is reported at AED 2,280 plus AED 575 for the Emirates ID (about $777). Budget separately for the medical test and health insurance.
