Up to 180 days in the UAE to find your employer, no sponsor needed

Open to managers, professionals and technicians, plus graduates of a top-500 university who finished in the last two years.

It's a visit visa made for job hunting. You go to interviews in person, and when an employer hires you, you switch to a work visa. It won't help with casual or unskilled work, and you can't earn a paycheck on it.

About that data card

Our card lists "Recent graduate or job seeker" as a requirement. GDRFA Dubai is stricter: skill level 1, 2 or 3, or a top-500 degree earned within two years. You also need your degree certificate, proof of accommodation and proof you can support yourself. GDRFA lists processing at 48 hours, and the visa runs 180 days at most.

Eligibility

Do you count as skilled?

The Ministry of Human Resources sorts jobs into nine skill levels. Levels 1 to 3 are managers and executives, professionals in scientific, technical and human fields, and technicians.

The grad route needs a top-500 university. No official page says which ranking counts, so confirm before you pay.

Doctors, nurses, teachers and lawyers also need a UAE professional license.

Here's the catch: you already get 90 days

Americans get a visa on arrival for up to 90 days in any 180, and it can't be extended. This visa earns its fee when your search may run longer: extensions go in 30-day steps, up to 180 days total.

Khaleej Times describes it as single-entry, so plan on staying put. Overstaying costs AED 50 (about $14) a day.

From job offer to residence visa

Offer and work permit

Your employer applies for your work permit. By law, the employer pays recruitment, travel and residence costs.

Status change

Agencies say most jobseekers switch to employment status without leaving, through GDRFA in Dubai or ICP elsewhere.

Medical test

A medical fitness test comes next. Your right to work starts only once the permit is issued and your status changes.

Emirates ID

You give fingerprints and a photo, then get your residence visa. Agencies report 7 to 14 working days for the whole switch.

Taxes, family and the Green Visa

U.S. taxes still apply

The UAE doesn't tax individuals' income. The U.S. does, and there's no U.S.-UAE tax treaty or Social Security agreement. The foreign earned income exclusion ($132,900 for 2026) is your main shield. Self-employed Americans still owe 15.3% self-employment tax.

Bringing family

As a resident, you can sponsor a spouse and children on AED 4,000 (about $1,089) a month, or AED 3,000 plus housing.

The Green Visa

Earn at least AED 15,000 (about $4,085) a month in a level 1 to 3 job with a bachelor's degree and you can look at the Green Visa.

UAE job exploration visa questions

Can I bring my family to the UAE once I get a job?

Yes, once you hold a residence visa. You need a salary of at least AED 4,000 (about $1,089) a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, to sponsor a spouse and children. Family members have 60 days after entering the UAE to apply for their visas.

Do I get the job exploration visa deposit back?

The AED 1,000 (about $272) security deposit is listed as refundable. GDRFA Dubai also charges AED 20 for the guarantee service and AED 40 to collect and return it. It doesn't publish a timeline for the refund.

Can I work while I'm on the UAE job exploration visa?

No. It lets you look for work and go to interviews. You can start a job only once your employer's work permit is issued and your visa status changes. The U.S. State Department warns that working on a visit visa in the UAE can lead to fines, jail or deportation.

Who qualifies for the UAE job exploration visa?

Skilled workers at UAE Ministry of Human Resources skill level 1, 2 or 3 (managers, professionals and technicians), or graduates of one of the world's top 500 universities who finished within the past two years. You'll need a degree certificate, proof of accommodation and proof you can support yourself.

Do Americans need the job exploration visa to look for work in the UAE?

Not always. U.S. citizens get a visa on arrival for up to 90 days in a 180-day period, and it can't be extended. The job exploration visa comes in 60, 90 or 120 days and can be extended to 180 days in total, so it makes sense if you expect a longer search.

How long does the UAE job exploration visa take to process?

GDRFA Dubai lists an expected processing time of 48 hours. Applications for other emirates go through ICP.

Can I switch from the job exploration visa to a work visa without leaving the UAE?

In most cases, yes, according to UAE visa agencies: your employer gets your work permit, then GDRFA or ICP changes your status, followed by a medical test and Emirates ID. By UAE law, the employer pays recruitment and residence permit costs.

Will I pay income tax on a UAE salary?

Not to the UAE, which doesn't tax individuals' income. You still file U.S. taxes. There's no U.S.-UAE tax treaty, so most salaried Americans rely on the foreign earned income exclusion, which is $132,900 for 2026 and requires 330 full days abroad in 12 months or bona fide residence.
