The UAE Green Visa puts your residency in your own name for five years
No employer holds your permit. Here's who qualifies, what the paperwork costs, and what Americans still owe the IRS.
It sits between the job-tied work permit and the Golden Visa. You don't need a sponsor, but you do need a bachelor's degree and a pay or income floor the government checks on paper.

Two ways in, and they test different things
As a salaried employee
You need a UAE employment contract, a bachelor's degree, and a job the labor ministry (MOHRE) classifies at skill level 1, 2 or 3. Pay must be at least AED 15,000 a month. Job classification counts as much as salary: a title that sounds senior can still sit at level 4.
As a freelancer or self-employed
First you get a freelance or self-employment permit from MOHRE. Then you show a bachelor's degree or specialized diploma, plus self-employment income of at least AED 360,000 in each of the previous two years. Abu Dhabi also accepts proof of financial capability in place of that history.
Green Visa
For skilled workers and freelancers; includes family sponsorship and 6-month grace period after visa expiry.
- Processing time
- ~14 days
- Timeline
- 5 years (renewable)

About that data card
Our database lists "Proof of skilled employment or freelancer status" as the core requirement. That names the category, not the test. The UAE's immigration authority (ICP) asks for a bachelor's degree on both routes, AED 15,000 a month for employees at skill levels 1 to 3, and AED 360,000 a year for freelancers holding a MOHRE permit.
Degree first, then the permit, then the paperwork
Start with the diploma
Your U.S. degree has to be attested before it counts. The UAE Embassy has used VFS Global for this since August 2025, and it expects a regionally accredited school. Both routes depend on it, so do it before anything else.
Then the government steps
From abroad, you get an entry permit (AED 200 plus 5% VAT) that's valid 60 days after you land. Inside the country, Dubai's GDRFA charges AED 200 for the permit, AED 20 in small levies, AED 500 for in-country processing and AED 20 for delivery: about $200 in total. After that come the medical test (AED 250 to 350) and your Emirates ID.
Buy insurance before you file
No compliant health policy, no residence visa. You're self-sponsored, so you buy it. A basic Dubai plan runs about AED 650 to 1,000 a year for one adult ($177 to $272).
Six things the official pages bury
Long trips home are fine
Standard UAE residence lapses after 180 straight days abroad. The federal portal lists Green residency holders as exempt.
Abu Dhabi has paused one door
Its residents office says skilled-employee nominations are currently unavailable there. Check before you file through Abu Dhabi.
Don't cancel your old visa
Already living here on a work permit? Keep it until the Green Visa is formally approved.
Check your passport
The UAE rejects U.S. passports with an X sex marker and 12-page emergency passports.
Clear your prescriptions
Many U.S. medications need advance approval, and CBD is banned outright.
Debts follow you to the airport
Unpaid bills, legal disputes or employment fights can bring an exit ban you won't know about until you try to leave.
Zero UAE income tax, but the IRS still gets a return
The UAE doesn't tax individuals' income. The U.S. taxes you anyway, and there's no tax treaty or Social Security agreement between the two countries to soften it.
Salaried
The 2026 foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900. A salary at the Green Visa floor (about $49,000 a year) sits well under it, as long as you meet the exclusion's residence or physical presence test.
Freelancers
Here's the catch. The exclusion doesn't touch self-employment tax: 15.3% on net self-employment earnings, owed from $400 up. Without a Social Security agreement, there's no way to pay into a UAE system instead.
Who should skip this visa
Remote workers paid by a U.S. employer. The skilled route needs a UAE contract. The virtual work visa, at $3,500 a month, is built for you.

UAE Green Visa questions
Do I need a UAE sponsor for the Green Visa?
No. The Green Visa is self-sponsored, so your residency isn't held by an employer. Employees still need a UAE job contract to qualify, and freelancers need a MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit.
What happens to my Green Visa if I lose my job?
You aren't forced out the day the job ends. After a Green permit is canceled or expires, you get a 180-day grace period to find new qualifying work or wind down and leave.
Can I stay outside the UAE for more than six months on a Green Visa?
Yes. The UAE government lists Green residency holders among those exempt from the rule that cancels residence after more than 180 continuous days abroad.
What does the UAE Green Visa cost?
In Dubai, the government fees for an in-country application come to about AED 740, roughly $200 (2026). Add a medical test of about AED 250 to 350, the Emirates ID, mandatory health insurance, and the cost of attesting your U.S. degree. Freelancers also pay for their MOHRE permit or free zone license.
Do Americans on a UAE Green Visa still pay U.S. taxes?
You still file a U.S. return every year. The UAE has no personal income tax, and the 2026 foreign earned income exclusion shields up to $132,900 of foreign earned income. Self-employed Americans still owe 15.3% U.S. self-employment tax, because the U.S. and UAE have no Social Security agreement.
Can I bring my spouse and children on a Green Visa?
Yes. Green Visa holders can sponsor a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs. The UAE also lets Green Visa holders sponsor first-degree relatives. Family members 18 and over must pass a UAE medical test, and their visas depend on yours.
How much do I need to earn for the UAE Green Visa?
Skilled employees need a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000, about $4,100 (2026). Freelancers and self-employed applicants need at least AED 360,000 a year, about $98,000, in each of the previous two years. Both routes also require a bachelor's degree; freelancers can use a specialized diploma instead.
Can I get the Green Visa while working remotely for a U.S. company?
Not on the skilled-employee route, which requires a UAE employment contract and a MOHRE work permit. Americans paid by a foreign employer usually fit the UAE's virtual work visa better, which asks for $3,500 a month.
