The UAE's Blue Residency trades a proven environmental record for 10 years
No UAE sponsor, and your spouse, children of any age and parents can get the same 10-year term. The hard part is proof ICP will accept.
It's the UAE's newest long-term residence, run by ICP with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. It fits Americans with a checkable record in climate research, clean energy, conservation or green investing. If that isn't your resume, the Golden or Green visa is the likelier way in.

ICP counts environmental work done inside or outside the UAE. Each group has its own proof, and all of it has to hold up on paper.
- Influencers: memberships, awards, publications, recommendation letters and at least AED 1,000,000 (about $272,000) in documented financial contributions
- Scientists: a master's or PhD in an environmental or energy field from a ranked university, UAE Scientists Council approval, and an h-index of 10 or a field-weighted citation impact of 1.0
- Investors and entrepreneurs: at least AED 2 million (about $545,000) of capital in a green business, a business plan and audited financials
- Inventors: environmental patents, with detailed descriptions
- Specialists: a nomination letter, an employment contract with an environmental organization, and at least a bachelor's degree

Applying from the U.S.
There are two doors. You can apply yourself through ICP's online services, or a UAE body can nominate you: the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, or the Office of the UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change.
If you're abroad, ICP issues a multiple-entry visa valid 180 days from entry so you can fly in and finish. Then come a medical fitness test, health insurance and your Emirates ID.
ICP doesn't publish a fee or a timeline. Guides put the all-in cost at AED 6,000 to 9,000 (about $1,600 to $2,450 as of 2026), plus AED 150 to 500 per attested document, and quote anywhere from two weeks to 50 working days.
Here's the catch
The first recipients Khaleej Times profiled, including an American who led the COP28 Presidency's food systems team, already lived in the UAE and were nominated rather than self-applying. And ICP's pages don't say whether Blue holders share the Golden Visa's freedom to stay abroad past six months. If you plan to split time with the U.S., get that answer in writing first.
No green track record? Two other long-stay routes
Golden Visa
Ten years, and the investor route starts at AED 2 million (about $545,000) in any sector, not just green ones. Holders can stay outside the UAE longer than the usual six months.
Green Visa
Five years, renewable, no sponsor. Freelancers need a bachelor's degree and at least AED 360,000 (about $98,000) a year over the past two years; skilled employees need AED 15,000 (about $4,100) a month.

What the IRS still wants from you
The UAE doesn't tax personal income, but the U.S. taxes citizens wherever they live. For 2026, you can exclude up to $132,900 of earned income if you pass the bona fide residence test or the 330-day physical presence test.
There's no U.S.-UAE tax treaty or totalization agreement. The exclusion doesn't reduce self-employment tax, so freelancers and business owners keep paying into U.S. Social Security.

Blue Residency questions
Do I need a job offer or a sponsor for the Blue Residency?
No sponsor is needed; ICP describes it as a 10-year, renewable residence without a sponsor in the UAE. Only one of the five groups, environmental specialists, needs an employment contract and a nomination letter.
Can my family come with me on the Blue Residency?
Yes. ICP says spouses, children of any age and parents can get 10-year renewable permits, and holders can also sponsor domestic workers.
How much does the UAE Blue Visa cost?
ICP doesn't publish a fee schedule for the Blue Residency. UAE guides estimate AED 6,000 to 9,000 (about $1,600 to $2,450 as of 2026) all-in, including a nomination fee of about AED 350, an entry permit of about AED 1,250 if you're abroad, the medical test and the Emirates ID. Add annual health insurance, which holders must keep.
How long does the Blue Residency take to get?
ICP doesn't publish a processing time. UAE guides range from about two weeks to 50 working days for applicants abroad. The 180-day entry visa for applicants outside the UAE is completed in one working day once the file is complete.
Can Americans apply for the UAE Blue Residency from the United States?
Yes. You can apply yourself through ICP's online services or be nominated by a UAE authority. Applicants outside the country get a multiple-entry visa valid 180 days from entry so they can travel in and finish the medical test and Emirates ID. U.S. citizens also get a free visa on arrival for up to 90 days within 180 days.
Do Americans pay tax in the UAE on a Blue Residency?
The UAE doesn't levy personal income tax, but the U.S. still taxes its citizens abroad. The foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900 for 2026. There's no U.S.-UAE tax treaty or totalization agreement, so self-employed Americans still owe U.S. self-employment tax.
What counts as an environmental contribution for the Blue Visa?
ICP lists five groups: environmental influencers, scientists and researchers, investors and entrepreneurs, inventors with environmental patents, and specialists at environmental organizations. The environment minister has said staff of international organizations, international companies and environmental NGOs are among the intended applicants. Work done outside the UAE counts.
Can I live outside the UAE for more than six months on a Blue Residency?
It isn't clear. Ordinary UAE residents who stay away more than six months risk automatic cancellation, and Golden Visa holders are exempt, but ICP hasn't published whether Blue Residency holders get the same exemption. Confirm with ICP before you plan long stays in the U.S.
