Zurich asks foreign students to prove CHF 21,000 a year. Lausanne asks for more.
Americans need a national visa before they fly; the canton, not the consulate, makes the call. Here's the file, the fees, and what the permit allows once you graduate.
Tuition at ETH Zurich and EPFL tripled for foreign students in fall 2025. For an American family, the bigger surprise is on the U.S. side: neither school can take new federal student loans.

How Americans apply
File from home, three months out
A U.S. passport covers 90 visa-free days, not a degree. Study means a national visa, filed at the Swiss embassy or consulate for your state: Washington, Atlanta, New York or San Francisco. UZH says to start at least three months before you travel, warning that a tourist entry can't be turned into a residence permit later.
The canton decides
The consulate forwards your file to the migration office where your school sits and gives no status updates along the way. Students don't pay the consulate's visa fee, but the canton charges its own: UZH lists CHF 95 for the visa authorization, about $115.
Within 14 days of landing
Register in person and collect a B permit, which is usually valid for a year. ETH puts it at CHF 144 (about $175), plus about CHF 40 for registration.
Student Visa

About that data card
The $88 cost line doesn't match what Americans pay. The Swiss representation in the U.S. waives its $103 national visa fee for students, and the real charges are cantonal: UZH lists CHF 95 for the visa authorization and CHF 162 for the residence permit, about $115 and $197. Dollar figures on this page use the Federal Reserve's September 2026 rate of 0.8242 francs to the dollar.
Proof of funds
The money has to sit where Switzerland can see it
Zurich's rule is CHF 21,000 for every twelve months, about $25,500 (September 2026). EPFL in Vaud asks for CHF 2,000 a month. UZH wants a letter from a Swiss-domiciled bank on the FINMA list and won't accept a parent's letter or a relative's bank statement. The canton also takes a sponsor declaration or a binding scholarship. You show the money again at every renewal.
Tuition beyond the federal institutes
UZH charges CHF 720 a semester, plus a CHF 500 surcharge for foreign bachelor's students. Across Swiss universities, foreign rates run CHF 435 to CHF 4,000 a semester.
Health insurance
Swiss basic coverage is compulsory. Students from outside the EU can ask their canton for an exemption only with private coverage equivalent to a Swiss insurer's, for three years plus three more.

Paying from the U.S.
ETH and EPFL can't lend you federal money
The Education Department lists ETH Zurich, EPFL, the University of Fribourg and the University of St. Gallen as deferment only. Enrolling pauses payments on loans you already hold, but you can't borrow new ones. UZH isn't on the list at all.
Where U.S. loans do work
EHL in Lausanne (federal aid page, school code G12096) and Franklin University Switzerland in Sorengo (aid page, code G11683) are listed as eligible. The list shows the Graduate Institute in Geneva as eligible too, but the institute says it stopped making loans to new students in December 2023.

Pell Grants can't be used at a foreign school. New borrowers lost Grad PLUS on July 1, 2026. Most graduate programs are now capped at $20,500 a year in unsubsidized loans.

After the degree
Six months to find a job, then the usual rules
Graduates of a Swiss university get six months after finishing to find work that matches their degree, with proof of money and housing. That permit can't be extended. If your job is of overriding scientific or economic interest, an employer can skip the usual test of proving no Swiss or EU candidate fits.
Your student years and a C permit
Swiss law says study stays don't count toward the unbroken five years on a residence permit you need for permanent residence. Citizenship takes 10 years and a C permit, and Switzerland won't ask you to give up your U.S. passport.

Before you file
Can I work in Switzerland on a student permit?
Yes, part-time. Foreign students can work up to 15 hours a week outside holidays, starting no sooner than six months after their course begins. In the canton of Zurich, the employer applies for the permit.
How much money do I need to show for a Swiss student permit?

Can my spouse come with me on a Swiss student permit?
Possibly, but it isn't a right. Students from outside the EU have no legal entitlement to bring family. The canton can allow it if you live together, have suitable housing and have enough money that no one relies on social assistance.
Can I use federal student loans at ETH Zurich or EPFL?
Not new ones. The U.S. Department of Education lists both as deferment only, which pauses payments on federal loans you already have but doesn't let you borrow for study there. EHL and Franklin University Switzerland are listed as eligible for federal loans. Pell Grants can't be used at any foreign school.
Can I stay in Switzerland after I graduate?
For six months, to look for a job that matches your degree. You need proof of money and housing plus your diploma or a letter confirming you finished, and the permit can't be extended. After that you need a regular work permit.
Do Americans need a visa to study in Switzerland?
Yes, for any stay over 90 days. Switzerland's visa list shows U.S. citizens visa-free for up to 90 days but visa-required beyond that, so you apply for a national visa at the Swiss embassy or consulate covering your state before you travel. Entering as a tourist and switching to a student permit later isn't allowed.
How long does a Swiss student visa take for Americans?
The Swiss representation in the U.S. says at least eight to ten weeks, and about 8 to 12 weeks in total, depending on the canton that decides your file. UZH advises contacting the consulate at least three months before you plan to arrive.
Does time as a student count toward Swiss permanent residence?
Not toward the part that matters most. Swiss law says stays for education don't count toward the unbroken five years on a residence permit required for a C permit. Switzerland does allow dual citizenship, so Americans who later naturalize keep their U.S. passport.
