Sweden has no digital nomad visa, so remote workers come in as business owners or visitors
Americans get 90 days visa-free. Staying longer on your own income means a self-employment permit that asks for about $20,100 of your own money and can take 11 months to decide.
We checked the Swedish Migration Agency's permit list in September 2026, and there's no remote-work category on it. Below: the route that fits how you earn, what it costs in kronor and dollars, and the tax rule that catches people paid by a U.S. company.

The short answer
The permit list stops at employees, business owners and job seekers
Sweden's work permits cover employees, the self-employed, temporary work and people looking for work. Nothing on the list is built for someone earning from abroad, whatever a few nomad-visa websites suggest.
That leaves two honest options: visit for up to 90 days, or qualify for a permit through a business, a job or a degree.
Pick the route by where your money comes from
Paid by a U.S. employer
Sweden has no permit for this. You can stay 90 days visa-free, but anything longer needs a residence permit before you arrive, and a work permit needs a job offer paying at least SEK 34,470 a month (about $3,470).
Freelancer or business owner
The self-employment permit is the closest thing to a nomad visa. You'll need SEK 200,000 (about $20,100) of your own money, at least 51% of the business, real experience and established customers.
You hold a master's degree
A permit to look for work or start a business lasts up to nine months. Show SEK 13,000 (about $1,310) per month and pay SEK 2,200 (about $220). Land a job and you can switch without leaving.
You just want a season
Stay up to 90 days visa-free. A visitor's permit can stretch a tourist stay to six months if you show SEK 700 (about $70) a day, but it gives no right to work or settle.

The self-employment permit
What Sweden wants from a freelancer
This permit is for running a business, not a laptop lifestyle. The Migration Agency looks for someone who owns and runs the company and has a believable budget.
Our estimate for a single person in Sweden is about $2,050 a month, so the SEK 200,000 minimum covers under ten months of life there.
- Your own money in your own bank account; loans aren't normally accepted
- Add SEK 100,000 (about $10,100) for a spouse and SEK 50,000 (about $5,000) per child
- Good experience in your industry and in running a business
- Established customer contacts or networks
- First application filed from outside Sweden
- Fee: SEK 2,000 (about $200), plus SEK 1,500 per adult family member

The six-month tax line
Here's the catch: stay in Sweden six months in a row and the Swedish Tax Agency treats you as fully tax liable, which means reporting income from everywhere, not just Sweden. Employment law network L&E Global adds that a foreign company with staff working in Sweden is typically on the hook for Swedish social security contributions. Talk to your employer before you plan a long stay.
If you stay
Renewals, citizenship and your U.S. taxes
To extend, you'll show the business is profitable, lasting and able to survive. Stay long enough and citizenship opens up, but the June 2026 rules made it slower. The good news is that Sweden lets you keep your U.S. passport when you naturalize.
- Citizenship: eight years in Sweden for most people, up from five
- Your own income of about SEK 20,000 a month before tax (about $2,010)
- Proof of Swedish language skills and knowledge of Swedish society
- From July 12, 2026, long-term residents get five-year permits instead of permanent ones
- Self-employed U.S. citizens living in Sweden pay into Swedish social security, not both systems
- The U.S. foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900 for 2026

Sweden for remote workers: common questions
Can I become a Swedish citizen and keep my U.S. citizenship?
Yes. Sweden lets new citizens keep their foreign citizenship if the other country allows it, and the U.S. State Department says Americans can naturalize elsewhere without risking U.S. citizenship. Since June 6, 2026, most people need eight years of residence, their own income of about SEK 20,000 a month before tax (about $2,010), and proof of Swedish language skills and knowledge of Swedish society.
When do I have to pay Swedish taxes?
The Swedish Tax Agency treats you as fully tax liable if you stay in Sweden six months in a row or longer, and fully liable residents report all their income, wherever it comes from. U.S. citizens also keep filing U.S. returns; the foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900 for 2026.
Does Sweden have a digital nomad visa?
No. As of September 2026, the Swedish Migration Agency's work permits cover employees, the self-employed, temporary work and people looking for work. There's no permit for living in Sweden while earning from a foreign employer or foreign clients. The closest option for freelancers is the residence permit to run your own business.
Can my spouse work in Sweden if I have a self-employment permit?
Yes. The Swedish Migration Agency says close relatives of someone with an employee or self-employed permit get the right to work while they hold their residence permit. You'll need an extra SEK 100,000 (about $10,100) in funds for a spouse, and each adult family member pays a SEK 1,500 (about $150) fee.
Can I apply for a Swedish residence permit after arriving as a tourist?
Not for a first self-employment permit or a first permit to look for work. The Migration Agency says a first application for either must be made from outside Sweden, or it may be rejected.
How long does the Swedish self-employment permit take?
The Swedish Migration Agency reports that 75% of recent self-employment cases were decided within 11 months. A first application has to be filed from outside Sweden, so build that wait into your moving date.
Can I work remotely for a U.S. company while visiting Sweden?
Americans can visit Sweden for up to 90 days without a visa. The Migration Agency doesn't publish a rule on remote work during a visit; employment law network L&E Global says it's generally possible within 90 days but that longer stays need a residence permit before you enter. A foreign employer can also owe Swedish social security contributions for work done in Sweden, so check with your company first.
How much money do I need for Sweden's self-employment permit?
At least SEK 200,000 (about $20,100 at September 2026 rates) in a bank account in your name, plus SEK 100,000 (about $10,100) for a spouse and SEK 50,000 (about $5,000) for each child. It has to be your own money; loans aren't normally accepted. The application fee is SEK 2,000 (about $200).
