South Africa's Study Visa: File It Before You Fly
A $36 fee at a U.S. consulate, a South African medical scheme, and one hard rule: you can't turn a tourist entry into a student visa after you land.
This is the visa for Americans enrolling at a South African university or college, whether that's a full degree or a semester that runs past 90 days. It's issued for the length of your course, and the paperwork is manageable if you start early.

The rule that trips people up
A tourist entry can't become a student visa
Americans get 90 visa-free days, which tempts people to fly first and sort out the paperwork in Cape Town. Don't. Visitor visaholders can't change status inside South Africa outside exceptional cases, and UCT won't register degree or semester students who arrive on a tourist visa.
You apply in person at the South African embassy or consulate that covers your state. In Los Angeles, no appointment is needed.

The paperwork
What goes in the envelope
The clock is the hard part. Your medical report and FBI certificate both have to be under six months old when you apply, and practitioners say police certificates alone can take up to two months. Order the FBI check first.

How long it takes, depending on who you ask
The embassy says visas over 90 days may take up to 3 to 4 weeks. UCT tells its students to plan on 8 to 12 weeks or longer, and the immigration firm IBN puts it at about 6 to 8. Apply as soon as the acceptance letter arrives, and hold off on a nonrefundable flight until the visa is in your passport.

How an American covers a South African degree
Federal loans work at some schools
Wits takes U.S. Direct Loans, except in its clinical medical programs (Wits federal aid). UCT offers them for undergraduate degrees other than the MBChB, plus honors, master's and PhD degrees (UCT eligibility). Programs taught by distance, even partly, don't qualify.
What's gone, or never worked abroad
Pell Grants and other federal grants don't work at foreign schools. Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026, so new grad students top out at $20,500 a year in Unsubsidized Loans ($50,000 in professional programs). Parent PLUS is capped at $20,000 per student per year.
The first bill
UCT's 2026 initial payment for international students from outside SADC was R121,700, about $7,460, due before you register. A catered residence adds a R44,500 initial payment, about $2,730.
Once you're enrolled
Renew 60 days out
Extensions are filed inside South Africa through VFS at least 60 days before expiry. UCT puts the fee at R2,175 (about $133): R425 to Home Affairs plus R1,750 to VFS.
Keep the scheme current
Your medical scheme membership has to be renewed each year of study, and it goes back in the file every time you extend.
Family comes as visitors
A spouse or children can join on an accompanying visitor visa, which doesn't let them work or study.
Never overstay
Overstay up to 30 days and you can be declared undesirable for 12 months. Past 30 days, it's five years.
After graduation
Staying on, and who should skip this route
The study visa doesn't lead to permanent residence on its own. Staying means qualifying for a work visa. Since October 2024, both the general and critical skills work visas run on a points test that needs 100 points. A critical skills job is the route practitioners point to for later permanent residence.
This visa is a poor fit if you want to try the country before committing since you can't arrive first and apply later. It's also a stretch if your plan leans on Pell Grants or Grad PLUS.
