Poland's student visa: English-taught degrees from about $2,300 a year
Americans pay $235 for the visa, then file for a residence card before it runs out. Since 2025 you also need B2 language proof, and U.S. applicants aren't exempt.
A Polish degree is a real option if U.S. tuition has priced you out. The visa is quick to get. The residence file you open after landing is where the time goes.

Who this route fits, and who it doesn't
It fits Americans who want a full European degree for far less than U.S. tuition. English-taught programs generally run €2,000 to €6,000 a year (about $2,300 to $6,800 in 2026). Doctoral schools charge no tuition and pay full-time candidates a scholarship. Our budget for one person living comfortably is about $1,600 a month.
It's a poor fit if you're counting on Pell Grants, eyeing a part-time or language-school program as a way to live in Poland, hoping to switch to a work permit mid-degree. A study visa can't be turned into a work-based residence permit inside Poland; you'd have to leave and apply from home.
What changed in 2025
Poland tightened the rules after officials said student status had become a backdoor to work. For admissions closed after July 31, 2025, every non-EU applicant must prove B2 in the language of instruction in listening, reading, speaking and writing. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, Trinity and ECL certificates count. Schools must also tell the consulate when an admitted student never starts.
From acceptance letter to residence card
1. Get admitted
Apply to a full-time program at a school approved to host foreign students, with your B2 certificate in hand. Ask admissions how it wants your U.S. diploma recognized.
2. Book the consulate
Book through e-Konsulat at the embassy in Washington or the consulate in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles or New York, depending on your state. Bring the original acceptance letter, proof of funds and housing, photos, and insurance of at least €30,000. The $235 fee is non-refundable, and the decision comes within 15 working days of payment.
3. File before the visa ends
The visa lasts a year at most, so a longer degree needs a temporary residence permit, filed by your last day of legal stay. Since April 27, 2026 that's done online in the MOS portal with an e-signature. Stamp duty is 340 PLN (about $89), plus up to 100 PLN (about $26) for the card. The first permit covers 15 months; later ones run up to three years.
4. Wait it out
The law gives the office 60 days, but that deadline was suspended until March 2026. While you wait, you can fly home to the U.S. but not tour the Schengen area.
What student status lets you do
Work without a permit
Full-time students with a study visa or permit can take a job with no separate work permit, even while a properly filed permit application is pending. Part-time and language-course students can't work.
Travel the Schengen area
The D visa covers stays in other Schengen countries of up to 90 days in any 180.
Stay nine months after graduating
Graduates of full-time studies can get a one-time 9-month permit to job hunt, and they don't need a work permit to take a job.
Build toward long-term residence
Half of your study time counts toward the five years needed for EU long-term residence.
Paying for it from the U.S.
Federal aid works only at foreign schools the Department of Education has approved, and only as loans. Pell and TEACH grants don't apply abroad, and online programs don't qualify.
The list got shorter
Jagiellonian University in Kraków declined to recertify for Direct Loans in March 2025 and isn't taking new applications. Before you commit, search the school in the FAFSA school list and ask its aid office for its federal school code.
New loan limits
Grad PLUS closed to new borrowers on July 1, 2026. Graduate students now top out at $20,500 a year in Direct Unsubsidized loans ($50,000 in professional programs like medicine), and Parent PLUS is capped at $20,000 a year. Check the gap between that and the school's cost of attendance before you enroll.

The nine-month bridge
Right after you graduate from full-time studies, you can apply once for a 9-month permit to look for work. You'll need funds, insurance and a Polish address.
The long road to settling
EU long-term residence takes five years of legal stay, and study years count at half. Absences can't top 6 months at a time or 10 months in total, and you'll need B1 Polish. If you want to stay, start Polish in year one.
