The Fee Paying Student Visa starts at NZD $850 and covers up to four years. A bachelor's, a masters and a doctorate all use the same form and produce very different years.

Level of study
A doctorate costs a fifth of a bachelor's
New Zealand prices tuition by level, and the spread is wide. At the University of Auckland, a year of the Bachelor of Arts runs NZ$40,225 for international students in 2026, about US$23,200. Commerce is NZ$48,133. Engineering runs NZ$58,009.
Then there's the doctorate. International PhD students pay what New Zealanders pay, NZ$8,847.60 at Auckland for 2026, roughly US$5,100. That's government policy rather than a scholarship, and it holds as long as you live in New Zealand while you do the research.
Level moves more than the price. A qualification at level 7 or higher opens the three-year Post-Study Work Visa, which is the usual on-ramp to the skilled work routes. Students doing a masters by research or a doctorate can work as many hours as they like instead of the weekly cap everyone else gets. As of November 2026, a one-year graduate diploma earns one too, so long as you already hold a bachelor's degree, including one you picked up back in the States.

Immigration New Zealand wants two separate piles of money, and it checks them differently. Tuition comes first: you must show fees paid for one course or one year, whichever is shorter. Living costs come second, and the bar is NZD $20,000 for each year of study, about US$11,600. A course shorter than a year is counted at NZD $1,667 a month.
Applying from outside the country, you can hold the tuition payment until INZ approves you in principle. Your file just takes longer that way.
Insurance is the third thing, and it's a visa condition rather than a document you upload. The policy has to meet the Pastoral Care Code and satisfy your school; in practice, this means buying the one your school sells. Studentsafe cost NZ$899 for a year of single cover at Auckland in 2026, roughly US$520.
The medical is the easy part of an American file. Under six months in the country, no chest X-ray is needed. Under twelve, no medical certificate. The United States sits on the low-incidence list for TB, so the X-ray question turns on where else you've been living.

About that data card
Two lines up there have been overtaken. The work condition still reads 20 hours a week, but the cap has been 25 hours a week since November 2025; every student visa granted after that date carries the higher number. The processing figure, 20 days, is optimistic too: INZ's published target for this visa is 80 percent decided inside 8 weeks. The rest of the card matches what immigration.govt.nz says today.
The doctorate deal
What a PhD does for the whole family
The domestic tuition rate gets all the attention. The family rules are the part that actually changes people's plans.
Enroll in a doctorate and your partner can apply for an open work visa lasting as long as your program does, which means any employer and any job. Your dependent children are then treated as domestic students in New Zealand primary and secondary schools, so you pay what a local family pays. Auckland and Otago both publish it in those words.
Smaller things stack on top. PhD students are the one group INZ excuses from the insurance condition. There's no weekly cap on work. You get six months after your student visa ends to file for the Post-Study Work Visa rather than three, and you can file it the day your thesis goes in.
The catch is the front door. A doctorate here needs a supervisor who agrees to take you and a proposal worth supervising, and that conversation starts long before any visa form does. Borrowing from home
At Auckland, the loans you already owe keep their schedule
The University of Auckland's own funding page says it is not a participant in the U.S. Title IV programs, so it cannot approve a Direct Loan and it cannot defer the loans you borrowed before you left. Deferment needs a school the Department of Education recognizes, and Auckland gave that status up. Payments keep falling due while you sit in class.
Four New Zealand institutions are listed as eligible on the Department's roster: Massey, Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and the New Zealand College of Chiropractic. AUT, Canterbury and Waikato are deferment only. We read the eligible ones against their own aid pages, and each carves out programs as well as schools. Wellington won't certify a degree with an internship inside it. Massey excludes nursing, joint degrees and outbound exchanges. Otago drops anything carrying an online component.
Washington tightened its end, too. The Grad PLUS door shut to new borrowers on July 1, 2026. A graduate year is now capped at $20,500, with ceilings of $100,000 for the degree and $257,500 for everything you ever borrow. Pell grants stop at the border, as they always have. Get the aid office to name your exact degree on paper before you accept a place.

How much money do I have to show for a New Zealand student visa?

Will a U.S. high school diploma get me into a New Zealand university?
Not on its own. The University of Auckland asks American applicants for a diploma from a regionally accredited high school with above-average grades, plus an SAT, ACT or AP result. AP is read as an aggregate of two to four exams, each scored 3 or better.
Can my partner and children come with me while I study?
They apply separately, off the back of your visa. Doctoral students are treated differently: a partner can get an open work visa and dependent children attend school as domestic students. Below that level it depends on whether your qualification is on the eligible lists.
Can I stay and work in New Zealand after I graduate?
A degree at level 7 or higher earns a Post-Study Work Visa of up to three years with open work rights. It costs from NZD $1,670 and you need NZD $5,000 in the bank. File within three months of your student visa expiring, or six if you did a doctorate.
Do Americans need a student visa to study in New Zealand?
Only for study longer than three months. On the visa waiver you travel on an NZeTA and can study for three months in any twelve. New Zealand semesters run about four months, so even a single exchange term needs the Fee Paying Student Visa.
Can I use U.S. federal student loans in New Zealand?
At some schools. Massey, Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and the New Zealand College of Chiropractic are eligible on the Department of Education's roster; AUT, Canterbury and Waikato are deferment only; the University of Auckland left the program altogether. Programs inside an eligible school can still be excluded.
How long does a New Zealand student visa take to come through?
INZ aims to have eight out of ten decided within eight weeks, and it asks students to file three months before they fly. Paper applications are gone, so everything goes through Immigration Online. The visa itself can run up to four years.
