New Zealand licenses you before it lets you work
A three month visitor visa for nurses, electricians and anyone else whose New Zealand license has a step that cannot be done from home.
Immigration New Zealand will not grant a work visa for a regulated job until the profession's own board has signed you off. That order catches Americans out because the license you already hold doesn't travel, and the board that replaces it answers to nobody at immigration.
A visa for the paperwork, not the job
New Zealand files this under visitor visas rather than work visas, and that one fact governs everything else about it. It exists so you can finish a registration you've already started, and it expects you to have started.
Before you apply, your registration authority must say in writing that you are eligible for the New Zealand process and that you have finished every enrolment step, including any English requirement. Immigration New Zealand wants that letter, evidence you can pay your way, a ticket out or the money for one, and a believable plan to leave at the end.
There's a second use for it that nobody advertises. If you're already here, you have applied for residence, and your registration is dragging, this visa buys you the extra weeks to finish without falling out of status.

Who actually has to get on a plane
Some licenses are decided entirely on documents. Others end with a person watching you work; that distinction is the only thing that decides whether you need to fly down.
Nurses
The Nursing Council can require an internationally qualified nurse to sit a competence assessment. The theory half is a multiple choice exam at a Pearson VUE test center, which you can take it without leaving the States. The clinical half is a two-day orientation and OSCE; both are taken in person at the Nurse Maude Simulation and Assessment Centre in Christchurch. There's no remote version of that one.
Electrical trades
The Electrical Workers Registration Board charges about $950, billed as NZD $1,650, to assess someone trained overseas, and takes around 12 weeks over it. Your assessment letter names the short courses, exams and practical assessments you still owe. A block course fits inside this visa. The supervised hours on a Limited Certificate don't count because supervised hours are work.
Doctors and teachers
Both run on documents. The Medical Council decides Comparable Health System applications in 20 working days, and the Teaching Council usually takes 6 to 12 weeks on an overseas file. If nothing in your process has to happen face to face, skip this visa entirely.
What an American file has going for it
Two of these processes have been made easier for people trained in the United States. The Nursing Council lists the USA among the places where a registered nurse holding current registration and 1,800 practice hours may not be asked to do a competence assessment at all, though it decides that file by file. Since July 2025, the Medical Council has fast tracked GPs trained in the United States, Canada and Singapore, with provisional vocational registration processed inside two months.
Where this visa stops
Here's the catch. Registration isn't permission to work, and this is not a work visa. You cannot take a job here on it, sell goods or services to anyone in New Zealand, or do work that needs you physically present at a New Zealand workplace. What you can do, under a rule that has run since January 2025, is keep working remotely for an employer or client back home, so a U.S. paycheck can carry you through the trip.
Immigration New Zealand also has to believe you are leaving. That means plans to go home, a ticket or the funds for one, and a declaration that you will pay your own health care costs while you are here. It recommends full medical insurance for the length of the visit, which is sound advice.

Nursing Council
Documents go through TruMerit first. The Council then charges about $280, which it bills as NZD $485.
Medical Council
Owns the scopes doctors work under, and counts the United States among 29 comparable health systems.
Teaching Council
Registration plus a provisional practising certificate costs about $490 in fees and levies.
Electrical Workers Registration Board
Assesses overseas trained workers, issues a Limited Certificate, and sets the supervised hours you owe.
NZQA
Not a board. It grades overseas qualifications, and a United States teaching license is not one it can grade.
No board at all
If Immigration New Zealand's registration tool does not list your job, you need neither registration nor this visa.

Questions about getting registered
Do I need New Zealand registration before I can get a work visa?
For a regulated job, yes. Immigration New Zealand's rule is that you get your registration first, then apply for the visa to work in that occupation, and you provide proof of registration with the application. Its online tool tells you whether your occupation has a registration authority.
What if my registration takes longer than three months?
Training or practical study tied to your registration has to fit inside three months. Anything longer is a student visa. If you are already in New Zealand and have applied for residence, this visa is also the way to buy more time to finish getting registered.
How long does the visa take to be approved?
Four weeks is the yardstick Immigration New Zealand sets itself, for eight applications in ten. The board is the slow half of this, not the visa, so get its written confirmation lined up before you file anything.
Do American nurses have to sit the OSCE in New Zealand?
Only if the Nursing Council asks for a competence assessment, and it may not. Its own guidance lists the USA among the jurisdictions where a nurse with current registration and 1,800 practice hours may be exempt. If you are asked, you take the OSCE in person in Christchurch.

Yes. A partner and dependent children aged 19 and under can be included in the same application. You provide evidence of the relationship, proof of identity for each of them, and they have to meet the health and character requirements too.
