Making content in Bali is work. The C5A is the visa that says so.
Indonesia's content creator visit visa gives you 60 days on arrival and two 60-day extensions. One Indonesian guarantor has to file it for you.
Indonesia spent 2026 deporting foreigners who worked on tourist stamps, creators included. The C5A is the legal route it built for creators. Here's what it covers, what it costs in practice, and when the remote-work KITAS is the better fit.

What it is
A visit visa, not a move
The C5A sits in Indonesia's official visa list as Visa Kunjungan Konten Kreator. It arrived in June 2025 when the immigration ministry renumbered every visa the country issues and gave creators an index of their own.
Read the word "visit." This isn't a KITAS, nor is it residency. You get 60 days when you land and can extend twice at an immigration office for 60 days each - 180 days total. It's single entry, so one weekend in Singapore ends the permit and starts a new application.
What it authorizes is the work: filming, shooting, posting, sponsored campaigns and brand collaborations. What it doesn't authorize is an Indonesian paycheck. You can't join a local payroll or be hired as staff on this index: your money has to come from outside the country.

About that data card
The government cost on that card reads $50, and nothing Indonesia publishes is that cheap. The Indonesian consular office in the United States prices a single-entry visit visa at $65 for tourism and $125 for the media index C5, verification fee included, on a tariff sheet effective March 16, 2026. Visa agencies quote the C5A's own government fee at around 1.5 million rupiah and charge a service fee on top. Both requirements on that card are real. Neither one mentions the registered Indonesian guarantor who files the application for you, and that's the piece people get stuck on.

Economic value
A free villa night for a reel counts
Immigration stopped asking whether money moved. The test now is economic value. The Directorate General of Immigration said it plainly in a public post on May 7, 2026: it's not always about payment. A comped villa stay traded for a reel counts. So does a portfolio shoot for a local brand or an unpaid collaboration with a beach club.
Enforcement caught up fast. Bali's Dharma Dewata patrol launched in April 2026 with around a hundred officers working Canggu, Ubud, Seminyak, Kerobokan and Uluwatu, treating public posts as evidence. Immigration reported 165 foreigners deported from the island and 62 detained between January 1 and April 12, 2026. In July, Australia's government travel service told its own citizens to sort the visa out before they fly.
Holiday photos on your own account are still holiday photos. The line is crossed when a business gets something out of it.
Why 180 days is the interesting number
Indonesia taxes its residents on income from everywhere they earn it, on a scale that runs from 5 percent to 35. You turn into one by passing day 183 inside any 12 months, or by living here with the intent to stay. A full C5A run stops at 180. That gap is real, and it isn't a shield: the intent test looks at your life, not your stamp, and the days you spent here on earlier trips still count. Track the total yourself.
The fork
Three situations, three different indexes
The work is about Indonesia
You're here to make the content: a destination campaign, a hotel collaboration, a surf film, a channel that runs on Bali footage. That's the C5A, and 180 days is usually more than a shoot needs.
The work just happens to be here
You're employed abroad and your laptop came with you. That's the E33G remote worker KITAS: one year, at least $60,000 a year from foreign sources, a contract with a foreign-registered employer, and $2,000 in the bank. Agencies flatly disagree about year two. Freelancers billing their own clients get turned away, because the rule names an employer.
An Indonesian company is paying you
Then neither one works. Local employment runs on a work KITAS, index E23, which the employer sponsors through an approved foreign workforce plan. No visit visa converts into it from inside the country.
What goes in the file
A passport with room
Valid at least six months past your arrival date, with blank pages.
An Indonesian guarantor
A registered, operating entity that files and vouches for you.
Proof of funds
Three months of statements showing roughly $2,000 in your name.
Onward travel
A return or onward ticket, since the visa only lets you in once.
Your channels
Links, portfolio and a plain description of the content you'll make.
Location permits
Drones, temples and protected sites need their own approvals.

Tax Residency and Visa Tracker Platform
Flamingo tracks presence country by country. Two extensions, an exit, a re-entry and a couple of quick hops to Kuala Lumpur add up faster than memory does, and Indonesian tax residency turns on the total.

A visit visa puts you outside Indonesia's BPJS system, so a private policy is the whole safety net. Ask ExpatInsure about scooter accidents and which license the insurer expects you to hold.
Before you book the flight
What happens if they catch me working on a tourist visa?
Fines and cancellation at the mild end, then detention, deportation and a re-entry ban. Bans have run for years, and serious or repeat cases have drawn permanent ones. For a creator whose audience is built on Indonesian footage, losing the country is the expensive part, not the fine.
Do I need a C5A if nobody is paying me?
Probably, yes. Indonesian immigration tests economic value, not payment. A comped villa, a gifted spa treatment, a discount off a rental, an unpaid shoot that fills out your book: each one carries value, so each one reads as work. Posting your own holiday photos with no deal behind them is still tourism.
How far ahead should I apply?
Weeks, not days. The portal decision itself is quick, usually a handful of working days once the file is in. Assembling the guarantor's documents is the slow half, and agencies commonly quote two to four weeks end to end when you file from outside Indonesia. Lock the sponsor before you lock shoot dates.
Is the C5A Indonesia's digital nomad visa?
No, and mixing them up is the common mistake. The C5A is a short visit visa for producing content here. The E33G remote worker KITAS is a one-year stay permit for people employed abroad, with a $60,000 income floor. What separates them is where your work points, not where your laptop sits.
Can an Indonesian brand pay me while I'm on a C5A?
Treat that as a no until an immigration officer tells you otherwise. Agencies split on it: some say the visa covers collaborations with Indonesian businesses, others say every rupiah has to arrive from outside the country. Everyone agrees you cannot be on a local payroll. Paid local engagements point at an entertainment or work KITAS.
Does a C5A make me an Indonesian taxpayer?
Not by itself. Indonesia's threshold is day 183 in any twelve-month window, and two extensions leave you three days short of it. Settle in with plans to stay and residency can arrive sooner than the count suggests. Residents owe Indonesian tax on income earned anywhere. Your U.S. return is due either way.
What does a C5A cost, all in?
More than the $50 in our data card. Indonesia's consular tariff for a single-entry visit visa runs $65 to $125 depending on the index, agencies quote about 1.5 million rupiah in government fees for the C5A, and each extension is charged again. Managed packages that include the guarantor advertise from roughly $450.
Can I stay longer than 180 days?
Not on this visa. You get 60 days plus two 60-day extensions, and then the permit is finished. Staying longer means leaving Indonesia and applying again, or moving onto a permit built for living here, like the E33G remote worker KITAS. Overstaying costs 1 million rupiah for every day.
