Family Reunification Residence Permit
In Hungary, your sponsor's permit decides yours.
A spouse, a minor child or a dependent parent of somebody already legal in Hungary. Up to five years when the sponsor is a Hungarian citizen, and the sponsor's status decides the rest.
Hungary's 2024 law killed the catch-all permit and made you name a purpose. Family is one of the purposes that survived. It's the route for the American who married a Hungarian, and the American whose spouse just claimed Hungarian citizenship through a grandparent.

The application is yours. The decision turns on your sponsor, meaning the person already living in Hungary.
A Hungarian citizen can sponsor. So can a permanent resident. So can someone holding an EU Blue Card, a Hungarian Card or the guest investor permit. Those files go through.
Who Hungary counts as family
The spouse of a Hungarian citizen or resident, including a registered partner under Hungary's 2009 partnership act. Minor children, adopted and foster children included. A dependent parent of the sponsor or of the sponsor's spouse. A parent with custody of a Hungarian child who lives in the same home. Adult children and unmarried partners aren't on the list.
The money test isn't a number
Hungary publishes no income floor for this permit, which surprises anyone coming from the Dutch or German rules. What it publishes is a list of documents: a bank certificate in your name, proof of regular income, or notarized undertaking from your family member to maintain you, backed by proof they can. The sponsor's payslips end up doing the work a threshold would.
Here's the catch
There's a closed list of permits that can't sponsor anybody. An ordinary Hungarian work permit is on it. So is the White Card, the remote-work permit. So are guest workers, students, trainees, seasonal workers and volunteers. Guest self-employment can sponsor, but only after a full year of holding it. If your person in Hungary sits on that list, nothing you file fixes it.

Register the marriage in Hungary first
Hungarian law treats a citizen's foreign marriage as unfinished business until a Hungarian registrar records it. The immigration authority says it plainly: a marriage certificate from the family member of a Hungarian citizen is accepted only after domestic registration. It's free. You book it at a consulate, both spouses turn up in person, and it has its own wait. All of that happens before your permit file exists.
Then apostille it, then translate it
Foreign documents need an apostille and an official Hungarian translation: birth certificates, marriage certificates, custody orders, the whole lot.
Then file, and where you file changes the price
Americans enter Hungary without a visa, so you're allowed to file inside the country during a legal stay. You do that online through Enter Hungary or in person at the regional directorate covering your address. A consulate charges 110 euros, about $127, and bundles in the entry visa. That visa is single entry, good for a 30-day stay. It expires if you don't land within three months of approval.

About that data card
Processing time ~60 days isn't a figure Hungary publishes for this permit. The authority gives itself 21 days to decide, and 70 days when the same file also asks for work rights. The five requirements are all real. They also all describe you. The condition that can end a case before it starts sits on the other side of the family, in the sponsor's permit type. Every dollar figure here came from September 2026 rates, 316 forint and 1.15 to the euro. The forint has traded between 301 and 343 this year, so check it on the day you pay.

Can you take a job on it?
Not automatically. Work rights come from filing as a single application with an employment appendix attached, which pushes the decision deadline out. The good news is the employment authority stays out of it when your sponsor is a Hungarian citizen, and stays out once you've held the permit a year. Hungary's EU Blue Card applicants get no such exemption.
Permanent residence, and the two shortcuts
A national residence card normally wants three years of unbroken residence. Two groups skip that wait. A spouse of a Hungarian citizen qualifies once the marriage is two years old. So does anybody whose own ancestor held Hungarian citizenship, which is the same family tree that got the sponsor a passport. Naturalization runs on its own eight-year clock. Three years of marriage to a Hungarian citizen cuts that to three years of residence.
The exam nobody warns you about
Since January 2025, that residence card also needs a written cultural knowledge exam, in Hungarian, sat in Budapest, 20,000 forint a sitting, about $63. Six topic areas, from Trianon to the Fundamental Law. Fail it three times and they stop letting you book. Hungary states flatly that age, origin, family ties and qualifications earn nobody an exemption. The citizenship exam excuses applicants who are 60 or older. This one excuses nobody over 14.

What Americans ask about this permit
Can a Hungarian family permit lead to a passport?
It can, and the obstacle is language rather than time. Permanent residence now takes a written exam in Hungarian covering history and the constitution, sat in Budapest. Naturalization has its own Hungarian language test. Neither one gets waived because you married in.
Can I bring my parents to Hungary?
Yes, if they genuinely depend on you. The list reaches parents on both sides of a marriage, and further out to a sibling or grandparent who can't support themselves for health reasons. The word doing the work is dependent, so expect to document the money that keeps them.
Can I work in Hungary on a family permit?
Only if you ask for it. Work rights aren't baked into the permit. You attach an employment appendix when you file or renew, which turns the case into a combined residence and work application. Holders who have already lived in Hungary a year are exempt from the employment authority's opinion.
If I get Hungarian citizenship through my grandparents, does my spouse get it too?
No, and that trips people up. Hungarian citizenship by descent runs down a bloodline. It doesn't move sideways to a husband or wife. What a spouse gets is a residence permit that the new citizen sponsors, and then a far shorter path to their own naturalization than a stranger would face.
How much does it cost to bring family to Hungary?
The government fee is the small part. Budget for what surrounds it: certified Hungarian translations of every foreign document, apostilles on each one, consular appointments that both spouses have to attend, and a comprehensive health policy that needs to be live before the permit is granted.
Can unmarried partners use Hungary's family visa?
No. Hungary recognizes marriage and registered partnership, and registered partnership there is open only to same-sex couples. Living together, however long, is not a family tie for immigration purposes. Couples in that position usually marry first or look for a different permit.
How long does a Hungarian family reunification permit take?
Faster than the paperwork in front of it. The immigration decision runs on a short statutory clock, but that clock only starts once the file is complete. For the spouse of a Hungarian citizen, the marriage has to be registered in Hungary before the file can even be accepted. Plan around the consular steps, not the decision.
What happens to my permit if we divorce or my sponsor dies?
Either one has to be reported within 30 days. Five years after the permit was first issued you hold a right of residence in your own name, so the change doesn't end your stay. Before that point you're leaning on somebody else's status, which is worth knowing going in.
