The paperwork here is a letter and a passport stamp. The money is a medical school that now costs more than Washington will lend you.
Grenada is on the short list of countries that ask a U.S. passport for nothing at the door. Ninety days on arrival, and a university letter that carries you past it. The hard part sits on the other side of the ocean. St. George's University charges $389,987 for the four-year MD. Since July 2026, the federal government will lend a professional student $200,000 of it. Here's the catch: this is a math problem, not a paperwork one.
Getting in
A letter, a passport, and a stamp that runs out
Grenada's embassy in Washington publishes the country-by-country list, and the United States sits in the no-visa column. You land in St. George's with a passport and you are admitted as a visitor.
The same embassy warns students that an acceptance letter doesn't exempt anyone from the visa rules. Read the two together and they say one thing to an American: your requirement is whatever your passport's requirement is. A U.S. passport's requirement is none.
What you carry through the airport
Arriving St. George's, students are told to travel with four things: he passport, the university's acceptance letter, a second university letter addressed to the immigration officer, and a copy of the foreign ministry's letter to the airline. That bundle is what turns a tourist arrival into a student one at the immigration desk.
Month four is the real question
A visitor is admitted to the end of term or to the date on the return ticket, whichever the officer writes down. Students who need longer go to the main Immigration Office in St. George's, which can extend a stay a year at a time. Nobody publishes a fee or form for it, so budget time rather than money and ask the university's immigration desk before your stamp runs down.

The gap
The loan door is open, and it just got narrower
Two institutions in Grenada can disburse U.S. federal student loans, and both of them are St. George's: the School of Medicine and the School of Veterinary Medicine. Both sit in the Eligible column of the Department of Education's roster of foreign schools. The medical side rests on a decision one level up, where a federal committee has accepted Grenada's medical accreditation standards since 1996, reaffirming them in January 2026. The veterinary side gets there a different way, through its American accreditation.
What changed on July 1, 2026
Grad PLUS, the loan that used to stretch to a full cost of attendance, closed to new borrowers. Professional students now stop at $50,000 a year, inside a $257,500 lifetime federal limit, and unsubsidized loans disbursed after that date carry 8.07 percent.
Then do the subtraction
Set the sticker against the federal ceiling and about $190,000 is still open, before rent, flights, books or insurance. Scholarships, family money and credit-based private loans are what close it, and the private ones price off your credit or a co-signer's. Anyone who borrowed for the four-year MD before July 2026 and stays continuously enrolled keeps the old rules for up to three more years. The school code is G22333 and the aid office publishes its own comparison table, so get your numbers from there rather than from a forum.
Start in Newcastle and the federal money stays home
St. George's sells the same MD with an early year at Northumbria University in England or at Waterloo in Ontario. Federal loan eligibility doesn't travel with it. The university's own aid page puts students in the Northumbria program outside the Direct Loan program since July 2011, limiting the loans to students who are or have been enrolled in the basic sciences in Grenada. If you need federal money, the island isn't a preference. It's the condition.

The veterinary side is the cleaner story
The DVM is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Education, which reaccredited it in October 2025 for seven years and logged two minor deficiencies. What that buys is plain: a graduate seeks a license in the United States or Canada by passing the NAVLE and meeting the state or province's own steps, with no foreign-graduate equivalence exam in the way. The school's five-year NAVLE pass rate is 84.3 percent, against the council's 80 percent benchmark.
The medical side runs through the Match
In the 2026 Match, 818 St. George's students and graduates took U.S. residency positions across 23 specialties and 42 states. The school says it has sent more new doctors into first-year U.S. residencies than any school in the world for 12 years running, which is partly a function of how many people it graduates each year.
Read the placement rate carefully. The 89 percent SGU publishes is measured against students who applied for a residency, not against everyone who started term one. People who left along the way aren't in the denominator.

Admission normally runs until the term ends or until the date your return ticket says you are leaving. The Immigration Office in St. George's handles extensions, reportedly a year at a time. Grenada publishes very little about that process, so confirm the current rule with the university before your stamp expires.
