Greece Student Visa: a free degree in Greek, or a paid one in English
Public universities charge Americans nothing for a Greek-taught bachelor's. English-taught programs bill 1,500 to 9,000 euros a year. Here is the permit, the money and the catch.
Greece runs two prices for the same degree, and the language of your program picks which one you pay. The permit side got easier in February 2026. The funding side, if you're American, got harder.
Two prices
Greece charges by language, not by passport
Greek public universities have never charged tuition for a first degree taught in Greek, and that includes students from outside the EU. Eurydice, the European Commission's education network, says first-cycle public programs are free to home and international students alike, textbooks included. The exception is any program taught in a foreign language.
The Greek-taught door
Free is real. The price of it is the language. You'll need Greek at roughly B2, your grades converted to the Greek 0 to 20 scale, and an apostilled, certified translation of everything. The Ministry of Education opens one electronic window a year, about a week long in early July. Chasing an apostille inside that week is how people lose a year. Work backwards from June.
The English-taught door
Here you pay. Fees start near 1,500 euros a year and top out around 9,000, with many between 4,000 and 6,000. The real limit is choice: Greece lists more than 200 English-taught programs and only about 16 are bachelor's degrees. Fees are set per program, so open the page for your exact degree.

What 650 proves
Clearing the bar isn't the same as affording the year
The number the consulate wants is 650 euros a month for the length of the permit. The University of Athens and the International Hellenic University both publish it. A deposit account, bank transfer or scholarship letter all count as proof; at renewal, so does a payslip from your part-time job.
Search for that figure and you'll get five answers. Commercial guides quote 400 euros a month, or 4,000 and 7,200 a year. Use the universities' number and have your consulate confirm it.
Then ignore it as a budget. Students in Athens report 500 to 900 euros a month all in, and our own Greece data puts a single adult nearer 1,500 dollars. A shared room is 250 to 350 euros and a transit pass about 15 euros. Clearing the bar and affording the year aren't the same problem, and Greece only checks the first.

About that data card
The timeline on that card, duration of study program, is right, and it only became right in February 2026. Before Law 5275/2026 a student renewed every year. Now the permit is issued once for the whole degree, with a transcript due every two years instead. Three tests the card leaves out are what decide real files: the 650 euros a month, the 20 legal work hours, and the post-study year. Ignore the difficulty word. That field tops out at 5 on a 10-point scale, so easy and hard routes print the same word.
American money
The free degree is the one you can't borrow for
Whether U.S. loans can follow you abroad comes down to one federal roster of foreign schools. Greece shows up on it exactly once. The American College of Greece, known as Deree, is marked eligible. No Greek public university appears in either column.
That second finding does the real damage. Deferment runs off the same roster. So a place at the University of Athens or at Aristotle brings no federal borrowing. It won't freeze the balance you're already carrying, either. That balance keeps its schedule regardless.
The U.S. side tightened in 2026 anyway. New borrowers lost Grad PLUS in July 2026, graduate borrowing now stops at 20,500 dollars a year, and Pell has never once worked at a foreign school. One rule catches people every term: take a single online course and you lose Direct Loan eligibility, because aid abroad requires in-person study. Ask your school what it will certify, in writing.

The court case
Greece's new foreign campuses are in front of a judge
Until recently, only the Greek state could award a degree. Law 5094/2024 let branches of foreign universities open, over large protests, and the first four started teaching in November 2025.
On August 13 2026, the Council of State, Greece's highest administrative court, annulled three of those licenses in full, along with the certification of their degree programs. CITY College with the University of York, Keele University and Anatolia College all lost their paperwork. UNIC Athens wasn't affected. The grounds were procedural, not academic: licenses issued before the certifying body had confirmed the schools fixed building and documentation problems. An Athens law professor, Panagiotis Lazaratos, brought the case.
The ministry says the reform stands and the schools can reapply. It matters to Americans because of who's next. Seven more were licensed in July 2026, among them Georgetown and Roger Williams, the latter operating as The American University of Greece alongside Deree. Lazaratos has filed against those seven, too. Nothing has been struck down yet. Ask a branch campus for its license status in writing before you send a deposit.

After the degree
The extra year, and the clocks that don't run
Graduating no longer means packing. Law 5275/2026 gives you a type H.11 permit, one year to find a job or launch something. File it at least 30 days before your study permit runs out. If the diploma is slow, you get three months past expiry to produce it. Three months in, you have to show a real prospect of work matching what you studied.
One line in that permit is worth more than the year itself. An H.11 holder can be hired without a position being available first, which skips the annual cabinet quota that gates the ordinary Greek work route. That exemption, not the extra 12 months, is the valuable part.
Two clocks, two answers
Student time counts for nothing toward the seven years of residence Greece wants before naturalization. It counts at half rate toward the five years behind EU long-term resident status. Guides promising that study gets you halfway to a Greek passport have fused two rules.

Does an American need a student visa for Greece?
Yes, for anything longer than 90 days. You apply in person at a Greek consulate for a national type D visa before you fly, with your acceptance letter, proof of funds, insurance, accommodation and an apostilled criminal record check. The visa only gets you in. You file for the residence permit after you land.
Will US federal student loans pay for a Greek degree?
Almost certainly not. One institution in the country can disburse them, a private American college near Athens, and no Greek public university qualifies. In-school deferment depends on that same federal list, so a public university also leaves the loans you already owe in repayment.
Can I stay in Greece after I graduate?
Yes, on a one-year graduate permit filed before the study permit expires. It carries a real advantage: an employer can take you on without an open slot being certified first, so it sidesteps the annual quota that gates ordinary Greek work permits.
How long does a Greek student visa take?
Plan on one to three months at the consulate from a complete file, and start the day your offer lands. The slow part is rarely the consulate. Apostilles, certified translations and the record check come from third parties on their own schedules, and one missing stamp restarts the wait.
Is university in Greece really free for Americans?
For a bachelor's taught in Greek at a public university, yes, and that's unusual in Europe. Greece adds no international tuition tier to that route. Study in English and you pay, with fees set program by program. The free version costs you a language; the paid one costs money.
Does studying in Greece lead to citizenship?
Not on its own, and the two clocks run differently. Student years buy you nothing against the naturalization requirement. They do count by half toward EU long-term resident status. Plenty of guides merge the two and promise a shortcut that isn't there.
Can I work in Greece on a student visa?
Up to 20 hours a week, outside your teaching hours, and that cap rose from 15 in February 2026. Pay in the jobs students actually get is low by American standards. Treat the wage as help with groceries and rent, not a funding plan.
