No job offer? No problem
Since June 2024, the Chancenkarte lets skilled workers, Americans included, move to Germany and hunt for a job after they land. Here's the catch: you apply at a German consulate in the U.S. first, not after you arrive, so some legwork is required before you fly to Europe.

Two ways in, pick one
If your degree or trade qualification is recognized in Germany, you take the skilled-worker route - no points math required. Good news for Americans: most U.S. degrees rank H+ in the anabin database. Everyone else needs 6 points across schooling, language, experience, age, and German ties.
Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
Allows skilled professionals to enter Germany to seek employment without a prior job offer. Family can accompany you on this visa. You'll transition to a work visa upon employment.

How long you can stay
One year to land the job
The card lasts up to one year to find qualified work. Got an offer but you can't convert to a work permit yet? A follow-up Opportunity Card adds up to two more years for a total of three. Strike out, and you head home, then reapply after a break.

Opportunity Card questions
What happens once I get a job?
You switch to a work residence permit or EU Blue Card right there in Germany. Your months on the Opportunity Card even count toward permanent residence later.
How long does the Opportunity Card last?
Up to one year to search for a skilled job. If you find a qualified offer but can't switch to a work permit yet, a follow-up Opportunity Card adds up to two more years, three years total.
How much money do I need to show?
About €1,091 a month, roughly €13,092 for the year, usually parked in a blocked account (Sperrkonto). Part-time income earned in Germany can count too.
Can I work while I look for a job?
Yes. Part-time up to 20 hours a week in any field, plus trial jobs of up to two weeks with an employer. Self-employment isn't allowed on this card.
Do I need to speak German?
You need at least A1 German or B2 English to qualify. In practice, more German opens more doors, and it earns you points on the test.
Can I get another Opportunity Card after mine ends?
Not back to back for an open-ended search. If you leave, you can reapply, but only after a break at least as long as your last card. Most people instead convert to a work permit or Blue Card once they're hired.
Do Americans have to apply from the US?
Yes. You apply at a German consulate before you travel. Unlike the Blue Card, you can't start the Opportunity Card after you arrive.
