Will I still owe U.S. taxes?
Yes, U.S. citizens file with the IRS wherever they live. The Foreign Tax Credit and the U.S.-France treaty usually prevents you from paying twice. France also has an impatriate tax break that can exempt part of your pay for up to eight years if you were living abroad when you were hired.
Do I need a job offer before I apply?
Yes. The French work visa is tied to a signed contract with a French employer. Your employer applies for your work authorization first, then you apply for the visa. No offer, no visa.
What's the difference between the standard work visa and the Talent card?
The standard route (the VLS-TS salarie) fits most contracts, and it can require your employer to prove no local candidate was available unless the job is on France's shortage list. The Talent card is the fast lane for higher-skilled, higher-paid hires: up to four years, no labor market test, and your spouse can work.
Do I have to speak French?
You won't need French to get the visa, but it'll help at work and in daily life, since English proficiency in France is only moderate. You'll need basic French (around A2 level) when you renew youre residency into a multi-year card.
How much do I need to earn for the Talent card?
About 39,582 euros gross a year for the qualified-employee Talent card, and about 59,373 euros for the EU Blue Card version. Only your base salary counts, not bonuses. These figures are set by decree and change, so confirm the current number with EasyStart before you apply.
How long does the visa take?
Plan on a few weeks to a couple of months to complete the visa process. The consulate typically processes the visa in about 15 to 45 business days once your employer's work authorization is approved. Booking your appointment can add time, too, so start early.
Can my spouse and kids come with me?
Yes. On the Talent card, your spouse and minor children get residence permits, and your spouse is allowed to work. That is a big reason skilled workers pick this route over the standard skilled worker route.
