Fiji writes an 80 percent attendance rule into your immigration status
The permit itself is FJ$321, about $145, and the ministry answers in about 21 working days. The degree is the part you have to fund on your own.
Fiji's Ministry of Immigration grants student permits for up to three years, and its file asks for no blocked account and no language test. What follows is what does go in it, what a year at a Suva campus comes to, and why the funding has to come out of your own pocket.

The permit
Where you can use it, and where you can't
Fiji issues a student permit, not a student visa. Regulation 33 of the Immigration Regulations 2007 sets a two-part test: you hold a place, or a letter of acceptance, at a secondary or tertiary institution registered with Fiji's Ministry of Education, and you can support yourself and anyone traveling with you.
The campuses an American would look at
Twelve Pacific governments jointly own the University of the South Pacific, whose Laucala campus sits in Suva. Fiji National University and the University of Fiji grant the country's other degrees, USP's Pacific TAFE arm runs vocational courses, and USP takes study-abroad students for a single trimester. Immigration won't issue a student permit for primary school, Years 1 through 8.
A tourist stamp is not a study permit
An American passport gets four months on arrival with no visa. That's a visitor permit, and regulation 25 bars its holder from research or study without the Permanent Secretary's written approval. A semester on the arrival stamp isn't a shortcut. It's a breach.

The processing figure needs translating, not correcting: Immigration's published standard is 21 working days, close to thirty on a calendar. Police reports, on two different triggers
You need one from every country you've lived in for 12 months or more in the past ten years, issued inside the last year. For an American, that's an FBI identity history summary. The local Fiji report only bites after 12 months of study there, so it lands at renewal, not on a first file.
A medical report under three months old
Date it carefully. A March report won't survive a July filing.
Somebody in Fiji has to vouch for you
Self-sponsored students send a sponsor's letter, that sponsor's bank statement or pay slip, a confirmed return air ticket, and a letter of support from a local guardian or sponsor. Nothing published says who qualifies. Sort it out early. It's the one item you can't produce from home.
You file this, your school reports on it
Elsewhere the university lodges the application. Fiji splits it the other way. You file through the IMMI HUB portal, and regulation 34 puts the duty on your institution's head to tell the Permanent Secretary the moment you drop the course.

What a year in Suva actually costs

USP's published 2026 international rates at Laucala: a bachelor's is FJ$18,000 a year, about $8,100. A full-time master's or PhD is FJ$10,070, roughly $4,530, a little over half that. The MBA runs the other way at FJ$34,720, and foundation year is FJ$16,650.
Your passport sets the price, not your address
The regional rate goes to citizens of the twelve countries that own USP, so an American never ages into it however long the permit runs.
Then the month itself
Our Fiji country guide puts one person at about $1,150 a month and a central one-bedroom near $550. The Fijian dollar bought about 45 cents in September 2026, and FJ$ is what a bursar invoices in.
Nothing in the file asks about insurance
The checklist has no health insurance line. Fiji's public system is free to citizens and permanent residents and bills everyone else, a private GP visit runs about $22 to $36, and anything complicated leaves the country for Australia or New Zealand. Buy a policy anyway.
The door that skips the permit
Fiji's Exemption by Descent Order 2023 lets the child, grandchild or great-grandchild of anyone who was a Fiji citizen in October 1970 enter, live, work, study and do research without holding a permit at all. It runs up to three years, multiple entry. If that's your family, the student permit is paperwork you never have to file.
Funding it
The money has to come from America, and mostly it can't
Washington keeps a register of foreign colleges cleared to disburse federal student loans. Fiji has no entry on it, and neither does any other Pacific island country. The nearest schools are in Australia and New Zealand. That file is a January 2024 snapshot, so open it again before you commit.
Two things follow. No new federal money for a degree in Fiji, and no in-school deferment either, since it runs off the same roster. Whatever you already owe keeps billing on the old schedule, right through the degree. Pell money doesn't leave the U.S.
Medicine has a second gate. The Education Department's committee on foreign medical accreditation names sixteen countries whose schools it treats as comparably accredited. Fiji isn't one.
What's left is savings, family money, a scholarship, or a private lender. Price that before you accept a seat.

How long does a Fiji student permit take to process?
About a month, if nothing bounces back. Immigration sets its service standard at 21 working days and says the real time turns on whether the file arrived complete and how fast you answer requests for more documents. Applications go in online through IMMI HUB.
Can my spouse or children come with me to Fiji?
Yes, on the same form. A spouse and children under 21, or unmarried children over 21, go on a coextensive permit tied to yours. It bars them from working or studying, though the ministry says a dependent can work once they hold their own work permit.
Will federal student loans pay for a degree in Fiji?
No. The U.S. Education Department has cleared no Fijian institution to disburse federal student loans, and no school anywhere in the Pacific islands either. That also rules out in-school deferment, so loans you already hold keep paying down on schedule.
Can I stay in Fiji after I finish my degree?
Not on the student permit, and Fiji runs no post-study work route. Working means a work permit, which an employer applies for after showing the job could not be filled locally. Permanent residence asks for five years of lawful residence and stays discretionary.
