Working in El Salvador on a trip: there's no working holiday visa

Americans get 90 days to visit, shared with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and tourist status rules out paid work. Here's how people actually stay longer or get hired.

As of September 2026, El Salvador has no age-limited work-and-travel program for Americans. This page covers the routes that do exist: a longer tourist stay, employer-backed work residence, and residence on income from home.

The short answer

What the law says about working as a visitor

El Salvador's migration law defines a tourist as someone here for recreation, science, family or religion, and it rules out work, study and business. DGME, the immigration agency, has no youth or working holiday category on its list of temporary residence types either.

Any paid job, even a few weeks at a hostel, needs a work permit first. DGME calls paid work without one a serious infraction.

Visit, then extend once

You get up to 90 days, counted across El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua together. DGME can add up to 90 more: email form F44, pay through the link it sends, then bring your passport to an appointment for the stamp. One applicant guide reports a $25 fee and a local reference who had to show up in person. Neither stay allows work.

Get hired by a Salvadoran employer

This is the only route to a local paycheck. You need a job offer and the employer's commitment letter, plus U.S. documents apostilled and translated into Spanish. G-P estimates 3 to 4 months, and you can apply after you arrive. Here's the catch: at least 90% of a company's staff and 85% of its payroll must be Salvadoran, and Central Americans count as Salvadoran. With minimum wage at $408.80 a month, these jobs mostly go to specialists.

Live on income from home

Rentista residence is for steady outside income, about $1,635 a month per one secondary source, and it bars paid work in El Salvador. Since a March 2026 reform, temporary residents must spend at least 90 days a year in the country.

U.S. taxes still apply

The IRS taxes citizens on worldwide income. The foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900 for 2026, but one way to claim it takes 330 full days abroad in a 12-month stretch, so a few months away won't meet it.

Laptop work on a tourist stay

El Salvador has no digital nomad visa, and the law's tourist definition leaves out work. We found no official statement on working remotely for a U.S. employer during a visit. The rentista route is the documented option for outside income, but its rules bar paid work in El Salvador and don't say how that applies to a U.S. job. Ask DGME or a local lawyer before you count on it.

Work and travel questions about El Salvador

How do I extend a tourist stay in El Salvador, and what does it cost?

Email form F44 to DGME, pay through the link it sends back, then attend an appointment to have your passport stamped. DGME's page doesn't list the fee. One applicant guide reports $25 and says DGME asked for bank statements, proof of departure and a local reference who came in person.

Can I work remotely for a U.S. company from El Salvador?

There's no digital nomad visa, and no official statement we found covers remote work for a U.S. employer during a tourist stay. Rentista residence suits steady income from abroad, but its rules bar paid work in El Salvador. Check with DGME or a Salvadoran lawyer for your situation.

Does El Salvador have a working holiday visa for Americans?

No. El Salvador's immigration agency, DGME, lists no working holiday, youth or work-and-travel category among its temporary residence types, and we found no such agreement with the U.S. as of September 2026. Americans who want to work there need employer-backed temporary residence with work authorization.

How much does El Salvador work residence cost?

DGME's renewal form lists $125 for up to one year and $240 for up to two years for non-Central Americans, with an answer within 45 business days once the file is complete. We couldn't find DGME's published fee for a first application, so confirm it before you file.

Can I work in El Salvador while visiting as a tourist?

No. Article 84 of El Salvador's migration law excludes work, academic and commercial purposes from tourist status. DGME treats paid work without a work permit as a serious infraction, and unauthorized paid work is also grounds for canceling a residence.

How can an American get permission to work in El Salvador?

Get a job offer, then apply to DGME for temporary residence with work authorization. The employer provides a commitment letter, and your U.S. documents must be apostilled and translated into Spanish. G-P estimates 3 to 4 months, and you can apply after entering the country.

How long can Americans stay in El Salvador as tourists?

Up to 90 days, and that total covers El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua combined under the CA-4 agreement. DGME can grant one extension of up to 90 more days if you ask at least five days before your time runs out.

Do Americans still need the $12 tourist card for El Salvador?

Maybe not. The U.S. Embassy's travel page still lists a $12 tourist card sold on arrival, but local press reported that lawmakers eliminated the fee on May 1, 2025. Keep $12 handy in case it's still collected. Americans whose passports show birth in El Salvador don't need the card either way.
