A Danish work permit starts with a Danish offer, and your salary picks the scheme

Offers of DKK 552,000 a year (about $84,000) can clear SIRI in a month. Lower pay can still qualify through a second salary floor or a shortage-list job title.

Denmark's Working Holiday permit doesn't include Americans, so the job offer comes first. Your employer can file the application for you, and you give biometrics within 14 days of applying.

About that data card

Our listing names "Proof of qualifications" as a requirement. The Pay Limit Scheme doesn't ask for one: it asks for a job paying DKK 552,000 or more, at least 30 hours a week, paid into a Danish bank account in your name. A completed degree matters only on the Positive List for People with a Higher Education. The 2026 processing fee is DKK 6,810 (about $1,040).

Pick your scheme

Your salary decides the paperwork

Denmark doesn't have one work visa. SIRI, the agency that handles work permits, sorts you by what the offer pays and what the job is. Whichever scheme fits, the pay and terms must match Danish standards, and you create a case order ID and pay the fee before you apply.

The four schemes Americans use most

Pay Limit Scheme

For offers of DKK 552,000 a year or more (about $84,000, 2026 level). Processing normally takes 1 month, up to 3.

Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme

For offers of DKK 446,000 or more (about $67,800) when the job sat on Jobnet and EURES for at least 2 weeks. Processing takes 2 months, up to 5.

Positive Lists

No salary floor, just Danish-standard pay for a job on the list. Since July 1, 2026 the degree list has 164 titles and the skilled-work list has 63.

Fast-Track Scheme

For employers SIRI has certified. You can start working before your permit is granted, and processing normally takes 1 month.

The fine print

What the permit ties you to

The permit belongs to this exact job. If the job ends, the permit is revoked, though a Pay Limit holder gets 6 months to look for the next one.

  • Apply for the job-seeking permit no later than two days after your last day.
  • A new employer means a new application. A new role at the same company doesn't, under the Pay Limit Scheme.
  • A side job needs its own separate permit.
  • The permit doesn't let you work in other Schengen countries.
  • Keep your Danish address and don't stay abroad more than 6 months in a row. Fast-Track holders may give up the address while abroad.
  • Give biometrics within 14 days of applying. If you're in Denmark legally, you can usually do it there.

Your U.S. taxes don't stop

You'll keep filing a U.S. return every year. For 2026, the foreign earned income exclusion covers up to $132,900 of foreign pay per person, and a U.S.-Denmark Social Security agreement has been in force since October 2008.

Family and the long run

Bringing your family, and staying for good

Your spouse or partner and kids under 18 living at home can come on your permit, and your partner gets the right to work. After that, Denmark rewards time and Danish lessons, not money.

  • Family permits cost DKK 3,080 each (about $470) and usually run as long as yours.
  • SIRI's September 2026 table lists family cases at 4 months, up to 6.
  • Unmarried partners need about 1.5 to 2 years of living together first.
  • Permanent residence normally takes 8 years (4 in some cases), Danish test 2 and a fee of DKK 7,570 (about $1,150).
  • Citizenship normally takes 9 years, Danish test 3 and a test of Danish society and history. Denmark has allowed dual citizenship since September 2015.

Denmark work permit questions

How long does a Danish work permit take?

As of September 2026, SIRI lists 1 month (up to 3) for the Pay Limit Scheme and the Positive List for People with a Higher Education, 2 months (up to 5) for the Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme, and 3 months (up to 4) for the Positive List for Skilled Work.

Does a Danish work permit lead to citizenship?

It can, slowly. Permanent residence normally takes 8 years of legal residence (4 in some cases) and Danish test 2. Citizenship normally takes 9 years of residence and Danish test 3, and Denmark has allowed dual citizenship since September 2015, so you can keep your U.S. passport.

What happens to my Danish work permit if I lose my job?

It's revoked, because it's tied to that exact job. Pay Limit Scheme holders can get a 6-month job-seeking permit, but they must apply no later than two days after the job ends, and a new employer means a new permit application.

Can my spouse work in Denmark?

Yes. A spouse, registered partner or cohabiting partner who comes as the accompanying family member of a work permit holder gets the right to work in Denmark. Children under 18 living at home can come too, and each family permit costs DKK 3,080 (about $470) in 2026.

Is there a lower tax rate for foreign hires in Denmark?

Yes, if you qualify. Employees guaranteed at least DKK 65,400 a month in 2026 (about $9,950) who haven't been liable to Danish tax in the past 10 years can pay a flat 32.84% on their pay for up to seven years.

How much does a Danish work permit cost in 2026?

SIRI's processing fee is DKK 6,810 (about $1,040) per worker in 2026, up from DKK 6,055 before January 2026. Each family member coming with you pays DKK 3,080 (about $470).

What's the minimum salary for a Danish work permit?

Under the Pay Limit Scheme it's DKK 552,000 a year in 2026, about $84,000, up from DKK 514,000 in 2025. The Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme accepts DKK 446,000 (about $67,800) with extra conditions, and the Positive Lists have no fixed floor as long as pay matches Danish standards.

Can I move to Denmark first and look for a job there?

Not on a work permit. SIRI grants Danish work permits for a specific job offer, so the offer comes first, and Denmark's Working Holiday permit is only for citizens of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Most Americans job-hunt from home and apply once the contract is signed.
