It's officially the Temporary Employment Permit. Your employer files it at the Labour Department with three job ads that found no Belizean, and renews it every twelve months.
Belize doesn't ask you to clear a salary floor or pass a points test. It asks your employer to prove nobody local could do the job, then asks again twelve months later. Here's the sequence, fee schedule, and pay math underneath them.

Who gets hired
A labor market of 170,056 people
Belize counted 170,056 people in its labor force in April 2026, and 3,162 of them unemployed. That is a 1.9 percent unemployment rate. Read it carefully. The Statistical Institute of Belize says the rate fell because fewer people were looking for work, not because jobs appeared. Employment fell by 12,611 on the year.
What that means for your file
A country this small protects its jobs. Your employer has to show the Labour Department three separate advertisements for the role, then explain to an officer why no Belizean was hired instead. Specialized trades clear that bar. Anything a Belizean could plausibly do does not.
Where the work sits
Tourism is the largest industry. Services and sales workers are 29.5 percent of everyone employed and elementary occupations another 20.7 percent. Professionals are 8.9 percent and managers 4.7 percent, so the roles that suit a foreign hire are a thin slice of a thin market.

The process
Two ministries, one permit
You have to be in Belize, with a valid passport and current entry stamp, before anything can be filed. People normally arrive as visitors and extend monthly at BZ$200 while it moves.
Your employer opens the account
Applications run through the Labour Department's portal at tep.mlgrd.gov.bz, and only an employer can open an account. If you own the business, you're the employer; you may file for yourself and nobody else. The company file wants articles of association, a certificate of good standing, a trade license and six months of bank statements.
Then Immigration takes over
You carry the approval letter to Immigration, get told your fee, collect an income tax letter from Belize Tax Service, and pay. The permit is issued on the spot. Last stop is the Social Security office for a card that costs BZ$26 on temporary status against BZ$5 for a Belizean.
Licensed work needs the license first
Doctors, nurses, teachers and engineers must attach a Belize license to operate. Start that before the job offer.

About that data card
The card says permanent residence opens after your second work permit. That's right in effect, though the rule Immigration publishes is one year of legal residence with 14 days or fewer spent outside Belize in total. Two things the card cannot show. Our database carries no price for this route, and the real schedule runs BZ$150 for a crop season to BZ$3,000 for a professional year. We also couldn't find the eight passport photos or Village Council letter on any government page, so read those as one office's practice, not the national rule.
The money
Belize pay, against Belize prices
Pay in Belize isn't one number. Professionals averaged BZ$2,140 a month in the April 2026 labor survey and managers BZ$2,084, which is about US$1,070 and US$1,040 at the peg. Our own cost data puts one person's comfortable month in Belize at $1,300. Those two numbers don't meet.
What comes out of the gross
Belize taxes Belize-source income at a flat 25 percent, with relief that lifts the lowest earners out of it. Social security takes 10 percent of insurable earnings, split between you and your employer and capped at BZ$440 of weekly pay. The legal floor is BZ$5.00 an hour, for every job and every nationality. The standard work week is 45 hours.
The trap on the self-employed permit
Belize and the United States have no social security agreement. Take the self-employed permit, run your own Belizean business, and the IRS still charges 15.3 percent in self-employment tax on your net earnings, on top of the Belizean contributions. Neither the foreign earned income exclusion nor the foreign tax credit reaches it. Employees of Belizean companies are clear of it.
Six rules that come with the permit
One employer, one job
It names the role and the company. Change either one and you file again from the top.
Re-filed every year
They run a week, a crop season or a year. The yearly ones are refiled and repaid annually.
It builds toward residency
A qualifying year in Belize opens permanent residence, which retires the permit for good.
A spouse files separately
A spouse who wants to work needs a permit of their own. The dependent permit is narrower.
Remote work is a different permit
Working online for clients outside Belize runs through Work Where You Vacation.
A visitor stamp forbids work
The visitor stamp bans employment and business activity until the permit is in hand.

Plenty of Americans who ask about a Belize work permit want one of these instead.
If the money comes from outside Belize
Work Where You Vacation is the long stay permit for remote workers, and it trades money for simplicity: US$75,000 a year on your own, US$100,000 if a partner or children come too, US$50,000 of insurance, BZ$500 on arrival, six months in the country. Belizean clients are off-limits. Whether it can be extended is genuinely unsettled, so ask Immigration before you plan a year around it.
If you're 40 or older with income behind you
The retirement program wants US$2,000 a month from outside Belize and bans local employment completely. Cheaper status, smaller life.
If you're already living there
The good news is that permanent residence ends the permit cycle. No annual fee, no employer tie, and you can work for whoever will have you.

Does the job have to be advertised in Belize first?
Yes. The application asks for three separate job advertisements, uploaded as three documents, plus an interview in which the employer explains why no Belizean was hired. The system exists to reserve jobs for Belizeans, so a role a local could fill is a hard sell.
Can I work remotely from Belize on a work permit?
You would not need one. The Temporary Employment Permit is for working inside Belize's own economy. Remote workers paid from outside use the Work Where You Vacation long stay permit instead, which asks for US$75,000 of annual income and runs six months.
Can I apply for a Belize work permit from the United States?
No. The immigration department's instruction is that you must already be resident in Belize, passport valid and entry stamp current, before the application can be submitted. The usual pattern is to fly in on a visitor stamp and renew it month by month at BZ$200 until the answer comes.
How long does a Belize work permit take?
The published step is a call from the Labour Department within thirty days of filing. Belizean attorneys who handle these routinely describe two to three months to an answer, and employment platforms quote four to six weeks. Plan in months, and start before you give notice.
Does a work permit lead to permanent residency in Belize?
It can. Permanent residence is granted after a qualifying year in Belize, and the test is strict: no more than fourteen days abroad across the whole twelve months, added together. Time on a work permit counts. Once residence comes through you work without a permit and the annual fee stops.
Can my spouse work in Belize on my permit?
No. A permit names one person, one employer and one job, so a working spouse files their own. Immigration's dependent permit is a separate document whose published eligibility is narrower than families expect. Ask an Immigration office about your household before you commit.
