Belize · Temporary Residency
Belize temporary residency asks for $250,000, not a year of your life
The card lasts a year, renews yearly, and the filing fee for a U.S. passport runs about $400. What it will not do is let you work, and it is not Belize's six-month remote-work permit.
This is Belize's investor residency, though the government never calls it that. Put about $250,000 into the country, BZ$500,000 in Immigration's own numbers, and you get a resident card good for a year at a time. The appeal isn't the price. It's that nobody counts your days.

The status
What Belize means by temporary residency

Belize runs two residence statuses and nothing in between. Permanent residence is for people making Belize home. Temporary residence, in the department's own words, is for people making a substantial commercial investment in Belize who can't meet the ordinary permanent residence restrictions because of commitments elsewhere.
The one test on the qualifying page
Show evidence of investments in Belize worth at least BZ$500,000. Two Belize dollars have bought one of ours since 1978, so call it $250,000 and expect that to hold. No income test. No age floor. No language requirement. The card runs a year, then you renew.
Why the wording matters
Permanent residence asks for a year living in Belize with no more than 14 days out of the country. The cap is 14 days total, not 14 days per trip. A Christmas at home spends it. Temporary residence drops that test. That's the entire reason the status exists. You still need a place in Belize: a lease and utility bill, or a title and municipal tax assessment.

What goes in
Five things, listed plainly. A valid passport. A police record from your last country of residence, good for six months. A letter to the Director of Nationality and Passports explaining why you want the status. Evidence you have a home in Belize. Evidence of the investment: a real estate title, company registration showing you own or control the business, a trade license, social security registration, or sales and income tax returns.
What happens next
You file at an Immigration Office authorized to take residence applications and walk out with a file number. Immigration interviews you and your spouse within two weeks, and your referees come along with their own ID. After that, the Police Special Branch interviews you at your house. The department gives itself up to three months from the first interview to get there. Approval means paying and posting a security bond. The sureties on that bond have to produce a Belize passport or voter's ID. You collect the card in Belmopan five weeks after you pay.
Temporary Residency
Temporary Residence is for persons who have made or in the process of making a substantial commercial investment in Belize but due to commitments outside Belize cannot meet ordinary Permanent Residence restrictions.

About that data card
The $1,000 on that card is one figure for a fee Belize sets five ways. Temporary residence costs one fifth of the permanent residence fee for your nationality. That fee runs from BZ$1,000 for CARICOM citizens to BZ$6,000 for Europeans. Americans sit in the BZ$4,000 band, so the real number is BZ$800, about $400. Canadians and Britons pay nearer $300. The requirement list is the permanent residence one. This status has no medical exam, and it does want that letter to the Director. Treat 60 days as a floor. We've sent all of it to our data team.
Here's the catch
What counts as an investment is the open question

Two official pages, two different answers
The page that sets the test calls it a substantial commercial investment. The page that lists the documents opens its evidence list with a real estate title. So does a $250,000 house qualify on its own, or does Immigration want a business with a trade license and tax filings behind it? Belize's own website doesn't settle it. Consultants selling a simple property route read page two and skip page one.
One account worth reading before you wire anything
A Belize resident who owns a licensed, tourism-board-certified rental business with an employee wrote that two immigration offices told them it "didn't really qualify as a business." That's one person's experience, not policy. It's also the only account of its kind we found. And it lands on a real gap. The evidence list asks for general sales tax returns. Rentals in Belize pay accommodation tax instead.
The route everyone is writing about isn't law yet
In December 2025, Belize's Cabinet approved a fast track that would hand investors permanent residency outright, with no qualifying year. No bill has been introduced. No regulations, forms or fees have been published. Until they are, this card is the investor route.
If you aren't putting $250,000 in
The Long Stay Permit
Six months in any calendar year for remote workers. Immigration prices it at $500 an adult, wants $75,000 of income alone or $100,000 with family, and says it can't be extended.
Rolling visitor permits
You arrive with 30 days and add 30 more for BZ$200, about $100 a person. Immigration publishes no ceiling on renewals. What it never becomes is a status, or permission to earn.
The retirement program
Age 40 and up, $2,000 a month from outside Belize, run by the tourism board. Thirty days a year keeps it.
What it changes
Taxes, work and the road to a passport

Belize taxes Belize
Only money earned inside the country is taxable here. The business you buy pays Belize tax. The portfolio you left at home does not. Above BZ$29,000, roughly $14,500, the rate is 25 percent flat. General sales tax adds 12.5 percent to what you spend. Belize levies nothing on capital gains.
Your U.S. return doesn't move
Washington and Belmopan have never signed an income tax treaty, and there's no Social Security totalization agreement either. Nothing collected in Belize means no credit waiting for you against your federal bill. The 1040 keeps coming. So do FBAR and FATCA, and Belize hands over your account data regardless.
What the card doesn't hand you
It's not a work permit. Working in Belize runs through the Labour Department's temporary employment permit, and the immigration pages never say temporary residents are excused. It's also not a countdown to a passport. Citizenship arrives five years after permanent residence, and that still wants a full year on the ground.

Questions this route raises
How much do you have to invest for Belize temporary residency?
Belize asks for evidence of investments worth at least BZ$500,000, about $250,000. Evidence can be a title, company ownership, a trade license, or social security and tax filings. Renewals want proof the stake is still in the country, not a second one.
How long does Belize temporary residency take to get?
Our data card says 60 days. The department's own steps run longer. Immigration interviews you within two weeks of filing. The Police Special Branch then has up to three months from that interview to visit your home. The card itself is ready in Belmopan five weeks after payment.
Can I get Belize temporary residency as a digital nomad?
No. This status is built around money invested in Belize, not income earned outside it. Belize's remote-work route is the Long Stay Permit. The Ministry's page puts it at $500 an adult, caps the stay at six months a calendar year, and says the permit shall not be extended.
Does Belize temporary residency lead to permanent residency?
Not on its own. Permanent residence still wants a year of legal residence in Belize, with total absences of 14 days or less. Citizenship is five years past that point, and Belize doesn't ask you to give up your U.S. passport.
Can I work in Belize on temporary residency?
Nothing on the immigration pages grants a temporary resident the right to work. Paid work in Belize runs through a temporary employment permit from the Labour Department. Permanent residence is the status that carries the right to work with no permit.
Is Belize's $500,000 investor fast track open yet?
No. Belize's Cabinet approved the idea in December 2025. It would grant permanent residency outright, with no qualifying year. Nothing has been published since: no bill, no regulations, no forms, no fee schedule. The Cabinet brief didn't even say whether the $500,000 meant U.S. or Belize dollars.
What does Belize temporary residency cost to apply for?
Belize charges a fifth of whatever its permanent residence fee is for your passport. A U.S. passport sits in the BZ$4,000 band, so you pay BZ$800, roughly $400. A Commonwealth passport lands nearer $300 and a European one nearer $600. Replacing a lost card is BZ$300.
