Argentina checks your employer before it checks you
There's no income test or points to score. The company hiring you has to be on a national register of sponsors first, and your contract pay has to match the collective agreement for that job.
The order runs backwards from what you'd expect. You don't apply and then get hired. Your employer gets approved first; only then can a file exist in your name. So the question that decides this move isn't what you earn. It's whether the company hiring you has done this before.
What it pays
The union contract sets your wage floor, not the visa
There's no savings test, no blocked account, no monthly figure to hit. What Migraciones checks instead is that the pay in your pre-contract matches the scale in the collective agreement, or convenio, covering your activity and category. Those convenios are negotiated sector by sector, then signed off by the labor secretariat. Ask which one you'd fall under before you sign, because that document sets your floor.
Here's the catch: the pay itself. The average registered salary in June 2026 was 1,915,879 pesos a month, about $1,250 at the 1,535 the Banco Nación quoted for a dollar on 19 September. That average counts only people on the same payroll over a year, so it flatters things. Informal work made up 44 percent of everyone employed in early 2026.

The register that comes before everything
An Argentine business that wants to hire a foreigner has to be entered in the Registro Nacional Único de Requirentes de Extranjeros, the roll of employers cleared to bring one in. A 2004 decree created it; Migraciones runs it today under Disposición 3043/2020. Buenos Aires immigration firms describe the same effect: the platform won't attach a residency application to an unlisted company. It's a technical block. Nothing to expedite.
Nobody tests you against the labor market
No job ad has to run first, and there's no shortage list to appear on. The scrutiny lands on your employer instead. Before granting a registration, Migraciones can inspect the company's commercial address, cross-check what it files with the tax agency, and satisfy itself the post is vacant and genuinely needs a foreign hire. A sponsor caught filing false paperwork can be struck off for five years.
A U.S. employer can't sponsor you here
A foreign company with no Argentine entity can't hold the registration. Yours needs a local subsidiary or an employer of record that already holds one. One Buenos Aires firm puts the registration at about two weeks, more from its own caseload rather than a standard timeline.

About that data card
Two of the lines above need a correction. The description says you can't change from tourist status; the regulator says the opposite in as many words, because you have to be inside Argentina to file this. There's even a tourist-to-work authorization under Disposición 1824/2013, good until your tourist stay expires. The term is off, too: the card says one year, while Migraciones' non-Mercosur page for this category grants three, renewable. Separately, we left the requirement list off: two of its five lines, a labor ministry sign-off and proof of qualifications, are on no published checklist.
Year one
You can start the job before the residency is granted
The certificate that carries you
You file through RaDEX, pay the fees it generates, upload documents and wait for an appointment. While the case is open Migraciones issues a precaria, a provisional certificate that lets you stay, work, leave and come back. It runs in 90-day blocks until the file resolves. Plan around one thing: since the 2025 decree, precaria time doesn't count toward permanent status or citizenship.
Payroll buys you something the other routes don't
Once you're on an Argentine payroll, 17 percent comes off your gross pay: 11 for the pension system, 3 for PAMI, 3 for your obra social. That last deduction is the interesting one. A retiree or rentista here is a temporary resident who buys private cover. An employee has union health coverage from month one, and can route those contributions into a prepaga plan instead.
Your employer has a deadline too
Within 30 calendar days of filing, the company must produce the tax-agency registration proving you were really hired. March 2026's labor reform made that one filing the act that counts, so both systems now want the same form.
Leaving is the risk nobody plans for
Two rules here turn on days rather than intentions. Spend six straight months outside Argentina and Migraciones can cancel a temporary residency. Spend twelve continuous months inside on temporary permits and you become an Argentine tax resident, taxed on income from anywhere. A long contract back home trips either one without anybody meaning to.

What gets withheld, and what the years add up to
Income tax barely reaches an ordinary salary
Your employer withholds fourth-category income tax monthly, and the entry point sits well above local pay. In the second half of 2026 a single filer with nobody to claim starts paying near 3.5 million pesos a month gross, roughly $2,280. Deductions shift that line and the brackets reset twice a year, so read it as a range.
Washington still wants a return
Filing here doesn't end your U.S. filing. The two countries have never signed an income tax treaty, which leaves the foreign tax credit and earned income exclusion doing the work. Have somebody who files in both systems read your first Argentine payslip, not your first tax bill.
Three years to permanent, two to a passport
Non-Mercosur workers reach permanent residency after three unbroken years as a temporary resident, provided you were here for half of each granted term. Citizenship after two years of legal residence is real and unusually quick. June 2026 court rulings handed naturalization back to the federal electoral courts, though, so budget a court timetable.

Can I work in Argentina on a tourist visa?
Not on the tourist stay itself. There's a narrow exception: an autorización de trabajo transitoria under Disposición 1824/2013, which a registered sponsor requests for you once you're in the country. It lasts only until your tourist permission expires, it dies when you leave, and you can hold two in any twelve months.
How do I get a work visa for Argentina?
You need an Argentine employer holding a live entry on Migraciones' register of requesters, plus a signed pre-contract setting out your tasks, hours, term and pay. Then you enter the country legally and file for temporary residency as a trabajador migrante on the RaDEX platform.
Do you need a job offer to work in Argentina?
For this route, yes, and it has to come from a company with an Argentine legal entity. There's no job-seeker visa and no points system here. People who want to arrive first and look around usually start on the rentista route or the digital nomad stay.
Can my spouse work in Argentina too?
Usually, yes. Your spouse and children can apply for residency through family reunification once you hold yours, and the migration law lets temporary residents take paid work without a separate permit. They don't need a sponsor of their own, which surprises people used to the US system.
How long does the Argentina work visa take?
Budget about two months for the decision. The part that actually sets your start date comes earlier: getting the employer registered if it never has been, and having your police record apostilled and translated by a sworn translator. Plan those before you plan a flight.
How much do you have to earn to qualify for an Argentina work visa?
There is no figure. Where Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands all set a salary bar, Argentina sets none for a sponsored worker. Instead the file checks your contract against the bargained pay scale for the work you will be doing, so your floor is whatever your sector negotiated.
Can I keep my US job and work remotely from Argentina?
Not on this visa. It's built for employment with an Argentine company, and a foreign employer with no local entity can't sponsor anybody. Americans working remotely for firms outside Argentina use the digital nomad stay or the rentista residency, and both of those bar Argentine employers.
