Argentina's $500,000 passport isn't on sale yet
The framework is real, the program isn't, and the courts voided the piece that mattered. Here's what you can actually file in 2026.
Argentina put a citizenship-by-investment framework on the books in 2025, and brokers have been selling the waitlist ever since. Fourteen months later the Economy Ministry still hasn't published what counts as a qualifying investment, and in June 2026 two federal courts voided the decree the whole thing rests on. Nobody has been naturalized this way.
About that data card
The card below mixes up two different routes, and we're getting it fixed. The $500,000 is the figure brokers quote for the investment program, which has never opened. The two-year clock and 730-day processing time describe ordinary naturalization under Argentina's 1869 citizenship law, which is open today. Skipping that residence requirement is the entire point of the investment route, so the card describes the opposite of its own product.

Argentina wrote the decree, then its own courts took it apart
The paper trail
DNU 366/2025 invented the "relevant investor" as a new ground for naturalization and moved the power to grant citizenship from federal judges to the immigration service. Decreto 524/2025, published on July 31, 2025, built the program on top of that and created an agency for it inside the Economy Ministry. In April 2026, the government named Aixa Granara to run it, unpaid. Nobody has published the thing that matters: what a qualifying investment is.
Here's the catch
The Economy Ministry ran an international tender for a firm to design and launch the program. Bids opened in January 2026 and the spread told you everything. One consortium offered to do it for $10 per approved citizenship. Another wanted $20,000. The ministry cancelled the whole tender on April 14, 2026 after two bidders challenged the evaluation.
Then the courts stepped in
On June 18, 2026 a federal appeals court struck down the citizenship articles of DNU 366/2025. Twelve days later the Cámara Nacional Electoral went further and declared the decree absolutely null. Its reasoning was simple. Citizenship carries the right to vote, voting is electoral law, and the Constitution flatly bars presidents from legislating on electoral matters by decree. Naturalization went back to the federal courts, where it had sat since 1869. The government is reported to be appealing to the Corte Suprema.
So when does it open
Pick a source and you'll get a different answer: late 2026, the first quarter of 2027, or no date at all. An Argentine official told Infobae in August 2026 that the file had been "paralyzed," with the Security Ministry still unhappy about the vetting. The sectors floated for qualifying money are renewable energy, agribusiness, technology, tourism and infrastructure.

The route that works
Two years of living there, and the passport costs nothing
A clock almost nobody else offers
Argentina's citizenship law lets you file after two years of continuous legal residence. You need to be 18 and never need permanent residency first because temporary permits count toward the two years. Most countries want five to ten. That clock, not the price tag, is the real reason Argentina keeps showing up on second-passport lists.
How you start it
The usual door for someone living on savings is the rentista permit, which wants passive income pegged to the national minimum wage. That wage rose to 383,800 pesos a month on September 1, 2026, so the bar is five times that, or 1,919,000 pesos. Call it $1,270 at the official rate in mid-September. Rent, dividends, interest and annuities count. A salary or consulting fees don't. Retirees file the pensionado version instead, and a job, a degree or a real business all start the same clock.
What it costs in time
Longer than the brochures suggest. After the two years you file; with judges back in charge, you should budget the historic court timeline of roughly one to two years on top. Call it three years, end to end, sometimes longer in Buenos Aires where the backlog is worst. You'll need conversational Spanish, though there's no formal exam, and you keep your American passport.

Where it takes you
Henley ranks the Argentine passport 15th in 2026, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to more than 165 destinations. Counts vary by index, so treat roughly 170 as the honest number. You get Schengen short stays, the UK with an ETA, Japan and South Korea. The quieter prize is Mercosur, which gives Argentines the right to live, work and study in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, with simplified residency across the associate members. No court ruling and no foreign government can take that part away.
The tax rule Congress already wrote
Argentina's labor modernization law, published on March 6, 2026, added language to article 116 of the income tax law. Anyone who naturalizes on the strength of a relevant investment is treated as a foreign national for tax-residency purposes, so the passport alone doesn't drag your worldwide income into the Argentine net. If you already held permanent residency when it happened, you stay a tax resident. Note what that means: Congress has written the tax plumbing for a naturalization ground the courts just voided.
Your 1040 doesn't care
Here's the part the brochures skip. A U.S. filing obligation follows the American passport, not your address, so naturalizing somewhere else does nothing to it. Argentina and the United States have never signed a tax treaty either, which leaves no mechanism to split the difference. A second passport is a travel and residency document, not a tax plan. And every broker lists Argentina's E-2 treaty with the United States as a headline benefit, which is worth precisely nothing if you already hold a U.S. passport.
Do the arithmetic before you sign up
The investment route, if it opens, is expected to want $500,000 you don't get back or a million dollars parked in government bonds. The route that's open today asks for proof of about $1,270 a month and two years of your life. If you were going to move to Argentina anyway, the expensive door buys you speed and nothing else. If you weren't ever going to live there, it's the only door that would work, and it isn't open.

No. Argentina allows dual citizenship and asks you to renounce nothing. Americans who renounce do it for US tax reasons, not Argentine ones, and that's a separate and expensive decision. Argentine nationality, once granted, is also very hard to lose.
Does an Argentine passport lower my US taxes?
No. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live or what other passports they hold, and there's no US-Argentina tax treaty to soften it. Argentine tax residency is a separate question, triggered by permanent residency or twelve continuous months in the country. A cross-border accountant should price that out for you before you sign a lease.
Is there a faster legal way to get an Argentine passport?
For most people the ordinary route is the fast one. Two years of continuous legal residence makes you eligible to file, temporary permits count toward it, and you don't need permanent residency first. Very few countries are that short. Descent is faster still if an Argentine parent puts you in reach of it.
