The 12 Most Overrated Cities in the World

Unless you really love crowds and spending too much money, overrated destinations make for very disappointing vacations. It’s so easy to end up in one when glossy filtered photos of touristy hotspots look so good on Instagram. Avoid the hype by skipping these overrated cities.

1. Miami, USA

Miami is famous for its pristine beaches and non-stop nightlife, but locals have the opposite opinion. An ex-Miami resident stated that she’s lived in Miami for five years and hates it. Another commenter backed her up by saying that he had an awful experience at the beach because of the clubby environment.

2. Paris, France

Paris is infamously known as the city for lovers. However, with time, the city became overrated. One tourist commented that she’s lost her love for Paris because of the overcrowded and expensive places. It still has some iconic places to visit, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

3. Venice, Italy

Venice is famous for its picturesque canals and historic charm. The city is considered a worthy visiting spot for its beauty. Still, a Pakistani tourist states that every tourist spot is overcrowded, and it’s overpriced to boot. Some explorers also complain that the smell is not so charming.

4. New York City, USA

New York City is home to impressive skyscrapers and has served as an exciting destination for tourists and travelers for decades, but it looks like some of the Big Apple’s shine is fading. A visitor mentioned that he found the city overwhelming because of its size and the high expectations set by the movies. He didn’t expect it to be so crowded or expensive, so you have to wonder what movies he saw.

5. Dubai, UAE

Dubai is famous for its futuristic skyline, along with its luxurious lifestyle. A person affiliated with the tourism industry thinks Dubai lacks cultural depth and authenticity. The city has lost its soul after its transformation into a global metropolis.

6. Barcelona, Spain

Millions of visitors are attracted to Barcelona’s unique artwork, architecture, and seaside charm. One migrant says that the central problem is overcrowding from being too popular. Furthermore, critics say that with the surge in visitors, the laidback Mediterranean atmosphere has been overshadowed by frantic tourism.

7. Los Angeles, USA

It’s right to call Los Angeles as the world’s entertainment capital. Still, one adventurer mentions that it lacks a cohesive center, exacerbating the feeling of disconnection and sprawl. He added that the superficiality of the entertainment industry definitely doesn’t help.

8. Cancun, Mexico

For sun-seekers, Cancun’s soothing beaches are a perfect destination. A critic commented on the city, saying that the sanitized high-rise hotels detract from the authentic Mexican experience and severely lead to the town being overrated. An all-inclusive resort is no substitute for actual Mexican culture according to an experienced traveler.

9. Rome, Italy

The ancient ruins and their rich history are treasures for history enthusiasts in Rome. An expert writes that Rome’s romanticized image, portrayed in movies, doesn’t align with reality. He believes that Rome is overcrowded, which increases the lines for iconic landmarks and adds to the difficulty in navigating them.

10. Las Vegas, USA

Las Vegas is famous for its nightlife, but most travelers are of the opinion that your trip starts getting overrated after three days in the city. The city hosts some of the best state parks and casinos, all within a reasonable distance. But, the primary con of the town is that “Everything costs money,” and that’s a big turnoff for rookie travelers.

Other tourists agreed that the city is crowded and sketchy. With being sketchy, the city comes with a significant crime rate, too.

11. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is pretty friendly, and the Guinness is nice, but the city is termed overrated by experts. They agree that the nightlife and pubs there are similar to many UK towns and cities and not worth the haul. Other people aren’t impressed with the sights or the food. There are always good and bad perspectives of a place, but one commenter states that Dublin is pretty much average.

12. Sydney, Australia

There’s nothing explicitly wrong with spending Saturday night at Darling Harbour, except that in busy periods, everything is wrong with it. The flow of humans searching for overpriced lobster is obviously the biggest turnoff for tourists. Explorers said that Sydney beaches are praised around the globe, but you’ll probably walk away with a headache and a sunburn.
