About healthcare in Greece

Greece operates the National Health System (ESY), aimed at providing free and equitable health services to all residents. The system combines public and private healthcare providers, with many expats opting for the private sector due to quicker service and English-speaking professionals. National health standards are generally high, though they vary between the mainland and islands.

  • Public Healthcare System: Administered through ESY, offering primary care, outpatient surgeries, and rural health centers.

Access is granted to expats contributing to the Social Insurance Institute (IKA), whether employed, retired, or self-employed.

  • Private Healthcare: Often chosen for faster service, advanced treatments, and English-speaking doctors.

Greece's healthcare infrastructure is well-developed in urban areas, but quality and accessibility can decrease in more remote locations like islands or rural towns.

Eligibility & enrollment

  • Public System (ESY):
    • Employed or Retired Expats: Contributions to IKA allow access to public healthcare. Employers or retirees manage these contributions.
    • Self-Employed Expats: Pay into a different plan through the Organization for the Self-Employed (OAEE).
    • Unemployed Residents: Receive free coverage.
  • Private System:

Expats can opt for private health insurance from the outset, especially for the first six months in Greece as part of visa requirements.

  • Healthcare Cards:
    • AMKA: Social security number required for healthcare access.
    • IKA Card or Similar: Provides access to public health services.
