About healthcare in Chile
Chile offers a mixed healthcare system combining public and private options, ensuring access to quality medical care for residents and expats. The country boasts high life expectancy and a well-developed healthcare infrastructure, especially in urban areas like Santiago, Valparaíso, and Concepción.
The public system, Fondo Nacional de Salud (FONASA), is financed by a mandatory 7% income tax deduction for residents, providing universal healthcare coverage. FONASA focuses on preventative care and general medical needs. However, rural areas may face issues like slower service and limited resources.
The private system is run by Instituciones de Salud Previsional (ISAPREs), which also requires a 7% income contribution but may charge additional premiums based on factors like age and health history. ISAPRE plans cover private clinics and hospitals, offering:
- Faster service.
- Shorter wait times.
- More individualized care.
Expats often prefer private or global insurance options because of the higher standards and flexibility offered by private facilities.
Eligibility & enrollment
- Expats working in Chile are automatically enrolled in health insurance, choosing between FONASA and ISAPREs.
- Self-employed individuals and retirees can also register, provided they contribute to the system through taxes.
- To access healthcare services, expats need a RUT (Rol Único Tributario) or RUN (Rol Único Nacional), Chile’s identification numbers for tax and administrative purposes. The RUT/RUN is essential for signing up for health insurance, opening a bank account, or accessing other services.
